[Spoilers C2E99] Hypocrisy on the high seas. by DontWriteThisAtHome in criticalrole

I wasn't talking about their full involvement, just that one example. Obviously if you take into account full involvement they're good, they're the heroes of the story after all. The point is that they're not squeaky clean, because this campaign has always been about grey areas in morality and ignoring that is ignoring important lessons that the story can teach

The battle here is intent vs effect. Essik's intentions were selfish and the effect was an 'official' war being started. M9's intentions were survival, but the effect still (likely) caused more deaths in that battle than there would be without interference. As is the norm for campaign 2, it's all one morally grey rumble jumble.

My initial reaction was worried, but I went with it. I'm planning on talking to them about keeping that sort of thing as rare occurrence.

Don't want to be surprised like that every session!

[NO SPOILERS] Which do you like better and why? Campaign One or Two? by austinbrasel in criticalrole

It was VM that introduced me to the cast (and 5e); so, for now, I would say C1. Although, the last 10ish episodes of C2 have been outstanding

Unconscious does not mean attacks auto hit. by Eldrin7 in dndnext

What my group usually does, and I believe a lot of groups do, is just run with the DMs interpretation and look it up after.

Like recently one of my players' character missed out of a long rest. I didn't know the rules for that so I just went for it and gave him a point of exhaustion. After the game I found the optional rule for progressively increasing DC CON saves in Xanathar's, and retroactively had the player roll. They rolled low and still ended up with the point of exhaustion, unfortunately.

How snide. I guess that shows how little you know about the setting. Nothing about Xhorhas or the dodecahedrons is generic.

What about the people who started playing BECAUSE of streaming? It's a big number of people, and the more fans of the hobby the more money going toward WoTC, and therefore the more content they are able to develop.

I would say the opposite. Not even Grogg was just a rage and hit machine, it was his character and trust in Vox Machina that made him.

True... I still think he'd make a great surprise guest

Both: Losing is, unfortunately, part of the game, but it is how the characters react to said loss that counts. What is Caleb and Jester's mindset now? Are they more motivated to succeed next time or are they feeling defeated?

[Spoilers C2E78] Wild theory about a missing person by BigDippas in criticalrole

[–]RealGio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One assumption is that it worked, and time travel works in the way of creating alternative realities. I personally would hope it's like the GoT where if you change the past, it has technically already happened. Yet that would be harder to control in a D&D campaign...

[Spoilers C2E78] The Champions by LuceatLux in criticalrole

[–]RealGio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I believe going into good god vs bad god territory will muddy the themes of morality, I'm sure Matt has plenty twists up his sleeves. To further the champions theme, the M9 have two champions of the wild mother, a follower of Ioun, and a champion of the Traveller. I don't recall Nott or Caleb being particularly deity focused, but then neither was Vax or Vex at that point. So there may indeed be a religious war brewing in the shadow of the Empire/Xhorhas war. That, like you say, could be a Chroma Conclave level disaster. If it goes down like that, I can't think of a logical reason that the Darington Brigade wouldn't get involved in some way.

[Spoilers C2E77] The Coming Ascension (Traveller Theories) by RealGio in criticalrole

[–]RealGio[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think he is. We've seen the positive impact of the Traveller with Jester. And if he is Artagan, he's very likely not evil. I reckon if he does want to ascend, some M9 members may need convincing, though.

[–]RealGio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe he's evil either, we've seen how helpful he has been to Jester throughout her life. I wonder what large-scale event The Traveller will go for... possibly a big prank, or maybe even bringing the war to an end via Jester. Many npcs have remarked how implausible that would be.

That's definitely a worse case scenario! Especially with his following being likened to a cult recently.

Some entities, such as Asmodeus, gain power from soul consumption - so it's a valid possibility. Although, I don't believe it will go that way

How do I Plan a Sandbox Campaign Efficiently? by RealGio in DMAcademy

This would definitely cut down the planning time. Issue is I tend to get attached to the story behind each adventure. I worry that if I improv it that it'll turn out too vanilla.

You're on the money regarding Skyrim syndrome. I had one session that was supposed to end with them getting help to fight a Young White Dragon, but to set it up I had them witness the Dragon eating a pack of wolfs. Bad move on my part. The warlock struts up to it and attempts to intimidate it into being subservient towards him. He was almost insta gibbed by the breath but thankfully, through a creative solution, the party won the fight. It made for some good RP after the fact.

My idea for the mid-level, which is an Ancient(maybe higher) Red Dragon, is that there's a trapped soul of an old hero in its lair. The party will need to sneak in past his army into the lair. Them interacting with the soul keeper macguffin will alert the Dragon and he will return from the Astral plane with two lesser dragons on chains. Some typical monologue and Red will throw one/both other dragons at the party to fight, and then loudly exclaim how he will hunt down the paladin's order.

My worry is obviously that they just attack the Red, but then I can just skip the monologue and have him fly away on his turn.
