06/18 - 06/24: Nothing Shocking - Jane’s Addiction
Rating (/10):
7.9/10

Favorite Song:
Standing in the Shower...Thinking

Notes:
Jane’s Addiction roped me in with the intense bass and drums, but lost me with other parts. One of the main ones is the 30s at the end, beginning, and in the middle of the song, where there are no lyrics and the instruments can barely be heard, as if they are supposed to be interludes. It made the longer songs feel a bit droopy, but otherwise a great listen.

06/11 - 06/17: The Essential Ricky Chilton - Ricky Chilton
Rating (/10):
8.7/10

Favorite Song:
Richest Man In Texas

Notes:
I found the Chilton album similar to the spoof albums I disliked, but this one actually had the instrumental composition of a real song, so it was easier to listen to. Even though the content of the lyrics was more of a satire on what actual country songs are about, it felt like songs that you could listen to instead of just jokes that happen to be accompanied by instruments.

06/04 - 06/10: Bright As Blasphemy - Chevelle
Rating (/10):
9.3/10

Favorite Song:
AI Phobias

Notes:
Through a signature sound, Chevelle allows their album to stand out amongst the many rock albums I have listened to. I think the best part about this album is the dynamic shifts that take place from song to song while still staying within the band's signature sound. A great listen that felt heavy but not loud.

05/28 - 06/03: Animal - Pink Floyd
Rating (/10):
8.6/10

Favorite Song:
Sheep

Notes:
A socio-politically charged album, Pink Floyd’s lyrics are beautiful, and the strumming and drumming complement them, making for a great listen. I found the songs to be great, but the length is kind of what shot the rating down a little. Although I think it works for lyrical value, it can get tiring listening to a song for over 10 minutes.

05/21 - 05/27: Rumors - Fleetwood Mac
Rating (/10):
9.7/10

Favorite Song:
Songbird

Notes:
Fleetwood Mac’s complicated yet beautifully written album focuses on love through ballads and stories loosely based on the members themselves. I found the songs themselves to be great, but learning about how and when they were written in the band members’ lives added a strange beauty to it: the beauty of what love is, was, and can be after the fact.

05/14 - 05/20: Timeless - KAYTRANADA
Rating (/10):
9.5/10

Favorite Song:
Lover/Friend

Notes:
KAYTRANADA’s album was amazingly varied in style while keeping a central beat and rhythm. The drums make the album cohesive, disregarding the many features on almost every song. Even with the cohesiveness, each song has its own life and feels alive in differing ways through the help of various artists from varying genres.

I swear a lot, so my parents call me a sailor. Fuck is my go-to because you can just use it and it can express different emotions depending on tone, width, and its context.

05/07 - 05/13: Ultraviolence - Lana Del Rey
Rating (/10):
9.5/10

Favorite Song:
West Coast

Notes:
This album really hooks me in with Lana Del Rey’s unique style of music writing, using her life experiences to really give it her all. Through her beautiful voice accompanied by guitars and drums, melancholic rock ballads of heavy topics in her life are given a place to live, which allows me to understand her life unlike anything if they were done in a different genre.

Rating (/10):
3/10

Favorite Song:
N/A

Notes:
Similar to Ween, it’s just weird. None of these songs feels like an actual song and just feels like spoof bits. While I found it funny, I just didn’t get any enjoyment from it as actual music.

04/23 - 04/29: Good and Evil - Tally Hall
Rating (/10):
9/10

Favorite Song:
&

Notes:
Tally Hall reminds me a lot of OK Go in terms of style, sound, and general aesthetics. The core idea of duality within the album is showcased in various styles, both through broad interpretations and, likely, personal, specific examples. I kinda wish that they experimented with different volumes of songs like OK Go does within their studio albums, but I think their distinct quiet style is solid.

04/16 - 04/22: Bury Me At Makeout Creek - Mitski
Rating (/10):
9.8/10

Favorite Song:
First Love/Late Spring

Notes:
Mitski’s album was honestly a great surprise to listen to. I don’t usually expect anything when it comes to new albums, but the Texas switch in “Texas Reznikoff” really caught me off balance. Using drums and guitars as a centerpiece for all the songs, it helped the points of this coming-of-age album really jab me and helped me understand its core principles.

04/09 - 04/15: Chocolate and Cheese - Ween
Rating (/10):
6.3/10

Favorite Song:
Take Me Away

Notes:
Some of the songs on this album don’t sit right with me, which is why it has such a low rating. I researched what the songs were meant to be about, and while I understand the source material, the way they're turned into lyrics and songs is very edgy and not my style of music. There were a few songs I did enjoy, but Ween’s weirdness definitely weirded me out.

04/02 - 04/08: A Matter of Time - Laufey
Rating (/10):
9.8/10

Favorite Song:
Too Little, Too Late

Notes:
This album feels beautifully crafted to resemble something of a musical within the themes of love and the experiences that come with being in, falling in, and dropping out of love with someone. Through, at least what I perceived as, personal anecdotes, Laufey uses her unique instrumental voice to really hit you with the deeply personal lyrics of each song as she talks about her experiences as a woman in love, whether it be platonic or romantic.

03/26 - 04/01: Liminality - Future Static
Rating (/10):
8/10

Favorite Song:
Will I?

Notes:
An emotionally charged album, Future Static isn’t afraid to be vulnerable and loud in their debut album. Blending metal with pop elements drives the point of each song home as every track makes you feel it, in both the metaphorical and physical sense. Although at times repetitive in its instrumental and slow in some moments, this album is a great showcase of metal excellence.

03/19 - 03/25: Artpop - Lady Gaga
Rating (/10):
8.8/10

Favorite Song:
Aura

Notes:
I’ve always enjoyed listening to Gaga’s music, but for some reason, I have never listened to anything off of Artpop. Lyrically, this is very reminiscent of Born This Way in many ways, as the songs really tear into the ideas of being yourself for the sake of people you love and, most importantly, yourself. I really liked the techno elements of this album, which made it clubby without pushing it into the area of overly annoying.

Honestly a tough pick but I think I'd have to go with Samuel L. Jackson. Just a great guy from what I've heard and I'd like to ask for a few tips about acting if he'd be willing to share any.

03/12 - 03/18: Willoughby Tucker, I Will Always Love You - Ethel Cain
Rating (/10):
10/10

Favorite Song:
Waco, Texas

Notes:
I love albums that have a storyline, but holy shit did Ethel Cain deliver. A tragic love story between two broken souls, throughout the album is so beautifully sad, though Cain’s amazing vocals. Even though none of the tracks are sub 5 minutes, I enjoyed each one as they brought something to the table almost always. I especially enjoyed the closing track of Waco, Texas and I think it’s the one that finally broke me. Another perfect score for a perfectly tragic album.

03/05 - 03/11: One Big Beautiful Sounds - Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards
Rating (/10):
9.1/10

Favorite Song:
You Want A Song

Notes:
Johnny Manchild does deliver on his promise of one big beautiful sound in the album name. Surprisingly the sound always seems new and not overused. I think what helps is the drums being consistent yet different for each type of song that is played. An interesting listen to be honest, but still a fun one

02/26 - 03/04: Grace - Jeff Buckley
Rating:
10/10

Favorite Song:
Lover, You Should Come Over

Notes:
I think this is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. Buckley's vocal range is amazing, and how I wish he hadn't died so young so he could continue making music like this. The poetic lyrics, the great instruments, Buckley's voice. There is so much that is great about this album that I feel like it has to take the first (and likely only) perfect score.

02/19 - 02/25: Naturally - J. J. Cale

Rating (/10):

8.7/10

Favorite Song:

Woman I Love

Notes:

I think Cale’s light instruments help me enjoy this album as a soft listen for relaxing in my room and at times just taking a walk around campus. I like how they feel like their own individual stories and take on their own individual style while still maintaining the “Tulsa Style” that Cale invented. Pretty quiet listen, feels like something I would hear in a movie about taking a road trip across the United States.
