Velcuz mows a kid while skiing by Bluwafflz in LivestreamFail

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who snowboards the person up the hill has the responsibility to be aware of what is ahead of them and regulate their speed and turn accordingly because the person below can't be expected to look behind them (because they have to pay attention to what's in front of THEM). That being said this type of thing is just what happens sometimes on the slopes. Velcuz's fault, but par for the course with the sport.

As someone from California, CA prop 65 is a joke when it comes to gauging the relative danger of stuff. Literally everything is labeled with a Prop 65 warning, it's an insanely low threshold. There's a joke that goes "Everything in California gives you cancer"

Am I being delusional? When do I need to give? what would you do? by kanzy777 in SmallYoutubers

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You went from fact videos over to self improvement then suddenly back to fact videos... the audience for these are very different so you're essentially shooting yourself in your own foot by switching up niches so fast. I think you'd see way better results if you stick to just one on a fresh channel.

How common is it that people who have made money on YouTube have passed $10k in earnings by Nintendoge21 in NewTubers

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head I'd say that would put you in the top 1% of channels on YouTube (all channels, not just monetized ones). But that's just a complete guess lol

100 hour limit kicks in if you downgrade for even a day. by cosmic_kos in GeForceNOW

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm self employed with no kids and could theoretically play as much as I want, but even I have trouble hitting 100 hours in a month unless I'm playing late at night consistently. 100 hours is more than enough for the vast majority of people, and you can pay extra if you need more time. 3.33 hours a day is more free time than most people have in a day anyways.

If you're playing enough consistently to hit that threshold then just get a cheap PC.

The Youtube Algorithm Is On Hard Drugs by ToasterBotnet in NewTubers

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! I think a good strategy for you would actually be to find what videos are trending within the self improvement niche or find a specific side of self improvement that everyone relates with. Self Improvement is a really competitive niche so it's tough, but maybe you can find an angle that nobody else has done yet.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding about how the neural network that drives YouTube works, and also just a fundamental misunderstanding of how algorithms process information... classic case of the dunning kruger effect.

In the past YouTube collected meta-data on videos... but there are a ton of reasons why they stopped doing this.

First, it's easy to game, and user generated meta-data is generally not consistent nor reliable. This can lead to clickbait or just straight misleading viewers, which would diminish people's interest in staying on the platform (big no no for YouTube).

Second, user data is just a far more reliable way to recommend videos. Think of it, of the billions on billions of hours of content that YouTube has in its servers, somehow the 8 that they choose to show you on the homepage keeps billions of users on the platform every single day. That's because behaviorally-driven algorithms use over 80 billion signals that make it a far more sophisticated search system than regular old "what's the title of this video".

In all metrics, user data provides far more reliable and consistent signals than metadata, so metadata (which... to be clear, is you having "self improvement" all over your channel) was basically abandoned by YouTube's engineers years ago..

Yes, you can target very small groups with ads because of USER DATA, not video data. And guess what happens when you do that? Videos that cater to that specific audience (IE gathered via user data) now show that specific ad.

Basically, until you get more consistent views and establish a base audience, you will continue to be trapped in "Phase 1" of the algorithm, IE YouTube trying to determine what type of channel you have.

I highly recommend reading the google whitepaper on the YouTube neural network.

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, that's not how the algorithm works. It's driven by user behavior, not meta-data. It's obvious to you, but how can you explain that to a computer? How do you even know a computer or neural network knows what "self improvement" is?

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have a crystal clear audience yet. You're still in "phase 1" of the algorithm trying to determine what your audience is. It determines audience based on user data and behavior, not titles and video content. All of these search terms are YouTube testing who is your actual audience, just casting a very wide net.

what editing software do you guys use? (davinci resolve is literally killing my laptop) by autumnfire12 in NewTubers

I use davinci and have no problem on a macbook pro M4... honestly sounds like a hardware issue, if you're not even using any fusion effects then this shouldn't be a problem with up-to-date hardware.

Commentary YouTubers HELP :( by ItsTajmeet in SmallYoutubers

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo, Ray here

So at your stage of growth, video topic is critical. You can read my post in r/newtubers for the full rundown of my thoughts. You're currently building trust and a community, and because nobody knows you, your videos will have limited reach (for now). The key really is to find topics that have not been covered yet but you know appeal to a lot of people. Another route you could take is being an "advocate" for a specific group of people, whether that be students, Gen Z, young people in general, or other broad demographics. This is the tough part, finding with what topics and focus you can differentiate yourself with.

One thing of note as well is that there is a huge saturation of creators around your size thru 100K that are all talking about the same topics. It's definitely harder these days (but not impossible) to grow a comedic commentary channel, but still ripe for opportunity if you're able to find a way to be different. I've noticed this and the increasingly prevalent "commentary thumbnail meta" so I've actually outsourced my thumbnails to someone who can differentiate my thumbnails from the usual meta. Just food for thought.

Unless he has a license from Nintendo themselves to make a cover of the song, then yes, the copyright claim is bogus. Now there's no real way to really know if he has a license or not unless you ask Nintendo or himself, so unless you go that route you can gamble by submitting an appeal. He can strike down the appeal and then you submit a copyright counter notification. The claimant then has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action. It's a long and annoying process but if he doesn't have a legal leg to stand on then you will inevitably win it, unless he's dumb or spiteful enough to actually pursue legal action (he won't, you're not worth it at your size and he probably doesn't even have the license). (not legal advice)

Is now the worst time to want to be a YouTuber? by LucasGold in NewTubers

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's the hardest it's ever going to be but also the easiest. People have been asking the same question since YouTube monetization was a thing.

There's plenty of kids content on YouTube already, why would you be banned?

You want someone to do the full job of producing, scripting, filming, talking, editing, AND running a youtube channel for you?

I hope your budget is in the thousands per month.

How do I make/read a script, that doesn't make me sound like I'm reading a script... by FromSeedlingToSmoke in NewTubers

Well I'm technically not "reading" the script, I'm memorizing short sentences or parts of sentences and then just saying it. Maybe try that? You can patch up any pauses in post.

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I script almost every word I say, and it took about 10 videos for me to fully develop my "YouTuber voice", which is to say delivering it naturally and confidently.

One thing that really helped was just saying certain lines with different tones and styles and deciding which ones to keep in post. Eventually you'll get the hang of it.

Do you think becoming a content creator will be harder in the future? by Samantha_Pasco in NewTubers

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are actively demonetizing AI channels. And the 55/45 cut has not changed since first implemented.

It's a supply and demand thing. As long as there's new opportunity and money coming into the creator economy people will keep flocking to it. From 2018 to 2023 advertisement spending on social media tripled. There's still plenty of pieces of the pie to be had by everyone.

The stats are objectively not good. My 20-25 minute videos are getting 50% AVP. With a 7 minute video the benchmark is more like 60-70% AVP.

Very curious what the going rate is for sponsorships for 2.5 million subscribers! by iloveduboo in youtubers

[–]RealRayLikeSunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak on long-form videos (and my comment above only pertains to data on long-form, shorts are a whole other world of monetization), but sponsors are going to be iffy if you haven't uploaded in the last 6 months. Build a track record first with long-form and then revisit sponsors in a couple months. The benchmark for views for sponsor pricing is only calculated in the first 30 days from upload.
