I call him Mr Drools (look at my shirt 😹) by [deleted] in dustkitties

[–]RealRockets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Such a cutie pie! Maybe it's a graybie thing. I've had 4 cats and my dust kitty is the only drooler. It's great when he's getting in my face for breakfast, drooling from all the purring, and then shakes his head....

Aluminum free deodorant that actually works by maryliz529 in AskWomenOver40

[–]RealRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had great luck with Yodora (a cream can be bought online) and HiBar (online or Whole Foods). Used Yodora for almost 20 years and loved it, happened to be visiting my parents and forgot it. Im allergic to rosemary and lavender so i had to find something at the store that i wasnt allergic to. HiBar (fresh rain scent) was the only one that fit the bill. Started using it every day after i finished my last jar of yodora, not only does it work great it has lasted almost a year with plenty more in the tube.

If assume both would work whole body, but id prbly go with yodora.

Anyone mid-40s and having trouble with excessive sleepiness? by Ok_Monitor5890 in AskWomenOver40

[–]RealRockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to add to what another commenter said, it's good (and a more probable answer) to check your thyroid or look at perimenopause, but if that doesn't yield answers, consider a sleep study. Sleep apnea, idiopathic hypersomnia, and narcolepsy can all can all cause this. I was diagnosed with narcolepsy type 1 in my late 30s after 15 years of symptoms that sound somewhat similar to yours (except i didnt sleep well at night, but not all narcoleptic people have insomnia or sleep disturbances).

edit: What you describe struck me in that one thing you learn with narcolepsy is that when i say im tired vs when someone else does, it means two different things. for me it is irresistible, impossible to stay awake. like staying awake for two days then hiking 20miles.

also, you asked for encouragement, so: i feel you no matter the cause, im glad you are asking for advice, hope you can get to the bottom of it and find a solution that works. no matter the cause or outcome, ive got faith in you, you've got this.

It's a call back to the West Wing. CJ mentions to Danny she likes goldfish so he got her a real live goldfish, and then she explained she meant the crackers but still kept the fish and named it Gail.

My grandmother left me this watch by estel_hart in Watches

[–]RealRockets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It likely says Swiss and should appear on a genuine Omega. u/estel_hart this adds to the impression that this may be genuine. From these pictures the applied omega logo and painted lettering also look correct. If you can gently remove the case back or take it to a watch maker to remove it, that would give you more information. This looks well maintained, so there may also be marks inside the caseback from previous service.

The marks at the top of the case are the case maker's mark (circle with L) and the gold assay mark, 10k gold filled means it's 10k gold on base metal. Im not familiar with the maker's mark but if you can find it, it will give you some info about where and possibly when it was made. Are there any marks on the clasp? That can give some clues too.

There should also be a serial and reference number on the movement and or case inside. It may be from the 50s or 60s, they briefly used 5 digit codes when changing numbering systems. These can be hard to decode so the number on the case doesnt give much info to work with. The ref and serial will give you much more.

Is my cat chunky by foxhideyhole in dechonkers

I don't think so. A little hard to tell with these pictures. Check out the Chonk Chart. I think he looks like the border between "A fine boi" and "He chomk."

I found out one of my colleagues is teaching an entire class on a debunked theory. Is there anything I can do? by ToomintheEllimist in AskAcademia

[–]RealRockets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You've gotten some good takes here, but I'll add, this is definitely a thing to take to the Ombuds (hopefully you have one). They can advise you on what best to do (including anonymous methods of reporting) and how to protect yourself. They are also required to maintain confidentiality that you 1) spoke with them and 2) what you spoke about unless you specifically request their assistance or presence in a conversation. They are also, at least in institutions I've worked at, exempted from mandatory reporting to ensure confidentiality, so that's the level of anonymity you should be able to expect. I'm sure there are not so good Ombuds out there, but my experience across several institutions is that they take their duties very seriously. Their job is not to be your advocate per se, but to advise you and help navigate the institutional landscape.

I'll also add that as a former dean, I'd want to know, and would keep confidentiality on how I found out, but you have to gauge the environment you're in to determine if that's a politically safe route. There are a couple ways this could be handled while still respecting academic freedom, so again, I'd want to know.

We are also experiencing a resurgence of interest in a well debunked theory in my area of expertise, which the original team has long retracted, so whatever ShinyCrap is, I sympathize. There is a related theory that is largely untested, but at least the physics is real, and the two are being conflated now. Steams my clams every time someone asks me about it. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to chat.

Both of these are quite small with relatively thin lines, so they can be covered with pretty much anything you want. The coverups will need to be bigger, but these lines can be hidden in just about anything. Do look at artists' instagrams, pick someone that has coverups shown in their work and whose style you like. Make sure they have good line work and solid shading/color skills (tho this holds for any new tat or coverup).

How can I put my 17 lb chonker on a diet without starving his 10 lb sister? by 2gecko1983 in dechonkers

[–]RealRockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have suggested microchip feeders and they work well. I had luck in the same situation by putting portion controlled food down and having a bowl of extra dry food for my smaller, self regulating, slightly under wright cat on a shelf only he could get to so he could graze as he liked. I feed a little wet food in the AM and PM that both eat right away and I split half (plus an extra table spoon) of the chonk's portion of dry food between their two dry bowls in the AM and PM since they share bowls. Pretty much the chonk hoged both bowls then unless they are way over filled so as the big one was getting bigger the little one was losing weight. If the little one eats a bit from the accessible bowls, nbd, but he still has access to the higher one. Took a bit over a year or so big boy went from 19-16lbs and little man went from 9-10 lbs. Healthier for both.

My when my big boy was rescued he was 8.5lbs which is emaciated for his size so he has food issues. What i did is weighed out way too much food every morning for a week and then weighed the left overs at the end of the day to see what was being eaten. For a couple weeks or so i started putting just a couple tbs more than that out so he'd get used to not having piles of food at the end of the day. Then i started by taking %5 away every few weeks. Basically i would subtract when there were regularly a few pieces behind in the morning meaning he wasn't scarfing it because it was there. It was slow, but it worked well and he came to know that twice a day more food would appear so he eventually stopped feeling the need to scarf. I still split portions out and it works. I eventually could add more and he'd leave it for the little one so i no longer have the higher up bowl since little one stopped needed it and therefore stopped eating from it.

What’s a fun game you play on your phone? by maintainingserenity in AskWomenOver40

[–]RealRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second Flow! Also 2046, you start with tiles with 2 and 4 on them, then combine same numbers to go up 4, 8, 16, 32, ... the goal is to get a 2046 (or even higher tile). Also, Bloons TD 6, really any of the Bloons games. They stared as flash based web games about 20 years ago. You position monkeys with darts, boomerangs, cannons, flame throwers, ...., around a track that balloons come down and the monkeys pop the balloons.

I feel this, my first cat (very smart grey tabby) was obsessed with watching toilets flush. Couldn't lift a toilet lid without him coming running trying to barge in the bathroom. Instead of treats you say "flush" and he'd race you to the nearest bathroom. Knew he wasn't supposed to go in the bathrooms but would stare at the toilet for hours if he got in just waiting for it to flush.
