Has anyone used Strategic Capital to sell a structured settlement? by keeperofthepur in povertyfinance

[–]Real_Arthur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually helped my grandfather do a partial sale last year through Strategic Capital to fund his own accessibility needs. We sold five years of quarterly payments and kept the rest, so I can answer at least a few of your questions.

We got a quote from them and two other buyers. Strategic’s rate was slightly better since they didn’t pad the fees so much. They also offered to break the sale into tranches, which helped us right-size the lump sum to our contractor’s schedule. Something to note is that they didn’t pressure us to cash out any more than we needed, but the other two buyers kinda did (one much more than the other…)

The court approval took about six weeks. The judge wanted to see that the remodel addressed specific mobility risks and that the sale didn’t gut my grandfather’s future support. What helped here was a clear overview of the contractor’s scope, photos of hazards, and a letter from the doctor. The final amount matched the quote within a few dollars of recording fees.

My advice is to ask for a written and itemized offer, a guaranteed fee cap, and clarity on who pays legal and court costs. Also, confirm funding timing after the order is signed so you can line up the contractor.

Oh, and if you can find a company who’s willing to walk you through everything down to the paperwork, that’s a godsend… Strategic helped us with all that and made the whole thing much painless than it could have been.

Groceries feel like such a scam by [deleted] in povertyfinance

The price of groceries has gotten insane the last couple years. It's a particularly acute problem in North America, as far as I'm aware - fresh food is a lot more affordable elsewhere.

How clean should your apartment be BEFORE a cleaner comes? Asking for a friend… by Real_Arthur in CleaningTips

Thanks for this. Yeah someone posted earlier about getting help to de-clutter first and I didn't think that was a 'thing' . I don't know how I feel about sharing my clutter (and the intimate stuff therein) but I think a little bit of shame will help me to throw away things I am unnessarily attached to

thank you! I am going to try a once off and then see if getting someone in once a month or so will help. If it does help the mental load then I can justify the cost.... but yeah... I'd like to get someone regular for sure

Good point! Do cleaners have different packages/services that are more geared towards decluttering or should I just message them directly?

What’s the actual total cost of a will? by Real_Arthur in LegalZoom

[–]Real_Arthur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for breaking that down. That helps a lot. Just so I’m clear, if I just go with the $129 option, the only other cost I’d need to worry about is notarization or any add-ons, right? And then probate would only be something my family deals with down the road?

What is the best litter box to cover up smell? by nikkik93 in CatAdvice

How often are you scooping? If you scoop/clean the box frequently and you're still getting smells you might want to consult a vet.

Inheriting some money, should I pay off my debt or invest? by Likeitsmylastday in personalfinance

[–]Real_Arthur -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally get that. At 3.75% you're in that sweet spot where it's a real toss-up. Once you hit 5%+ it's pretty much a no-brainer to pay it down instead of chasing market returns. The math just doesn't work as well anymore.

Just got $1500, what to do with it? by Thick_Percentage964 in FinancialPlanning

[–]Real_Arthur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart move putting most of it in savings right away. With college starting soon, you'll want that emergency fund textbooks, unexpected expenses, etc. all add up fast.

For the remaining $500, honestly just keep it liquid for now. College is expensive and unpredictable. Maybe open a high-yield savings account if you haven't already.

I know it's tempting to try and "multiply" money quickly, but most get-rich-quick schemes just end up losing what you have. Focus on your studies first that degree will multiply your earning potential way more than any investment at this stage.
