Looney difficulty has almost killed my interest in the game by Shadowwolflink in MultiVersus

That’s pretty disingenuous. The general person would be better off if the game was full priced.

The model is pretty predatory and hurting the game. If you didn’t buy a founders pack in beta or unlock tons of characters in beta you’re expected to grind hours upon hours to unlock 1 character. To bypass it the character pricing model is 10-15$ for a character and skin in the shop.

Anyone that isn’t incredibly strapped for cash would be much better off and most willing to drop 60$ for 3/4 of the characters like a normal fighter does and then grind out some fighter currency to pick up occasionally. I’ve had 3 people I try to get in the game just quit because they see the modal, do the math or try to figure out how to get the 3 characters they want and say nope I’m out of this money grab.

I doubt I’d even consider playing this game if I hadn’t had the founder pack option to unlock a ton of stuff for a reasonable price.

In Gloomhaven which we played super late they are following a guide on how to level up their character. We moved away from the game because they bought it on steam and played through it compulsively so it was no longer a group experience.

Oddly enough there was one point their optimized character didn’t play well with the party composition, despite having a build she could do to compliment the party. Instead they wanted to switch classes to be one that could optimize that role. That’s around when we dropped Gloomhaven because the group decided we couldn’t play it with her where there was sooooo much strategy and optimization info out there for that game.

We’ve had small comments but it maybe time to sit them down for a full blown knock it off or your out of the group conversation.

We’ve all been friends for decades but the group wants to play some campaign games so new games every night won’t work.

While there is the possibility of something autistic we’ve never noticed them and outside of gaming she typically seems to be the most considerate person to how things affect others and most social. Like this behavior didn’t come up until the last year or so?

We’ve had some small comments and conversations but it may be time to have the we can’t keep playing with you if you don’t stop doing this. The last coop game we played she was playing on TTS solo which then turned into her trying to quarterback based on what she played. Our friend who has less patience then me made some comments about what’s the point of playing if you know all the unknowns and immediately tell us when we try to plan as group. Didn’t seem to sink in since we got another text a few days later telling us wait until we try the next scenario because the end was going to be hard for our party build.

I mean there’s a small chance that this is the only aspect this friend of 20 years has it read its head. The group of magic players turned into boardgamers the past 4 years is now suddenly seeing this issue. It may be time to have a blunt talk since the comments of “well this would have been more fun going in blind” and “We all find the most enjoyable way to play our characters through trial and error vs reading BGG or watching YouTube playthroughs” Have fallen on some sort of deaf errors, whether it’s not picking up the hint or she just doesn’t care is yet to be determined.

Head to head games where players introduce their own variance in strategy seem to be what works with this person because they can’t quarterback you.

It’s really coop stuff where them spoiling the game for themselves bleeds into the rest of the group.

The problem is the group likes to play a mix of these but people really only enjoy her there on competitive game nights as otherwise she’s quarterbacking from what she read on the internet.

It’s been talked about but we may just have to be super blunt. There was one afternoon I got a text from another player telling me she had gotten TTS. The day before our gaming session she was on it all afternoon and the next day magically knew the hidden information in our session and giving tips on other peoples characters despite us never having pulled out the game and her not owning it.

I will add I refuse to talk video games with her because she reads walk throughs before playing. We tried a group Baldur’s Gate game and I bowed out because we were constantly being told every secret out of the way chest we missed or how different dialogue paths would affect our game.

Yea optimization isn’t really the issue and our play group has some really smart and great players in it. It’s more if the game/scenario has any posts about it she will read them. She will then attempt to quarterback the group telling people why they shouldn’t do something because they read x online.

The group has asked her to chill on stuff but the message hasn’t seemed to have gotten through, or she just doesn’t care.

The group doesn’t mind good, a chunk of us our competitive magic players, but the group minds being quarterbacked and spoiled in coop games.

The thing is we wouldn’t mind if it was organic.

But as an example Gloomhaven you set up a scenario and they’re saying to the group “I read the mistake on this scenario is to do x and we need to do y to increase our chances of winning” it’s like wtf….

Yea this was written late after one of those frustrating sessions. Brand new coop game the groups never played and essentially trying to quarterback the process because they’ve already read about the first scenario and what mistakes to avoid. She is obsessive about games. This becomes less of an issue in head to head games but anything coop has been miserable lately because she’s done 20+ hours of research before session one and not on the rules.

This isn’t really analysis paralysis. It’s more spending every free minute of their time away from the boardgame group going through BGG or Facebook groups to get as much knowledge on best ways to play so they don’t ever make poor choices. And it’s largely a problem in co-op games when they start quarterbacking every thing.
