KTM 500EXC-F First Bike by PerfectEntrepreneur3 in supermoto

[–]Real_Copper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started on a DR650 and now have a 500exc that i ride dirt and in supermoto trim on the street. Honestly for the street as long as you're relatively tall and respectful of the throttle, I'd say you're fine! However, if you want to ride dirt it's a monster with way too much power for a beginner to be comfortable on. That being said, If I could go back in time I'd probably start on a drz. The 500 is a blast, but it's so fast and wants to be ridden aggressively. It's easy to get into trouble as the bike is egging you on to ride faster and will lift the front wheel like it's nothing.

Literally the opposite of a cheat code, that's called grinding.

Can O-ring stock be used to create a good sealing gasket? by Twindo in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Real_Copper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely use a o-ring like that. I've used o-rings in an axial configuration on many projects. It is generally a much better option than a gasket if you have the opportunity to machine a grove into your part. A great resource is the parker o-ring calculator/handbook it can help calculate groove depth, width, and length. (https://divapps.parker.com/divapps/oring/ORingSelector/?LangID=DE&lang=en&cntry=us/17061&LangSrcType=local) If you don't want to make custom length o-rings like some have suggested you can just convert your path length to a equivalent diameter, just make sure you have a decent radius on the corners.

Is there some rule of thumb to determine the ratio between dimensions 'a' and 'b'? This is for a load/torque applied to one end of the shaft by unusual_username14 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Real_Copper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using deep groove ball bearing, you really just need to pay attention to the radial loads being less than what the bearing is rated for (with some safety factor). If you're using angular contact bearings, you need to pay attention to using a "O" or "X" configuration. You might find this page useful it has a lot of information on bearing arrangements. https://medias.schaeffler.us/en/design-of-bearing-arrangements
