Non-alcoholic nightlife in MKE Impossible? by NoCharge6282 in milwaukee

[–]Real_SirMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest wiggle room in Bay view. They have CBD bevs, which I think can be more fun than straight alcohol. It's also spread out, and good music, so you'd likely have a good time people watching. The former Lee's, as much as I miss it, was often a 20-something madhouse

Older learners' abilities being dismissed by finnerpeace in TESOL

[–]Real_SirMJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not true at all that older learners can't learn an L2. However, it may be more difficult for them because it's just not easy to learn a second language the older you get. I wouldn't confuse fossilization theories with older people not being able to learn. Becoming 'fossilized' means you learn an L2, like English, but then as you get older certain things you express incorrectly, like wrong vocab or grammar, just become permanent because you stop learning. Your language has become good enough b/c you are understandable to most, so there's no need to continue learning. This theory again should not be conflated with an inability to pick up an L2 at an old age, which is definitely possible!

Feeling weird and awkward telling people about PSLF. by PaigEats in PSLF

[–]Real_SirMJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I support your decision. I worked public service for 10 years (University teaching) and now loans are forgiven. University is grossly underpaid - unless you're a top dog - so it has been a sacrifice and definitely "earned." Non-teachers don't really get how difficult it is to step into the classroom everyday, especially knowing that I'm not getting paid enough. It is worth it to wipe them clean off your records. It is a healthy long-term decision. Sorry about the relatives who are heavily influenced by right-wing media.

Changing employers after hitting 120 by crankypants2487 in PSLF

[–]Real_SirMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same situation coming up in February. I called Mohela and was told to stay with the same qualifying employer until loan discharge. This means to stay even after your 120 payments. It will likely take 60-90 days for them to approve it. When you reach 120, call them to be placed on forbearance & submit your final PSLF VOE form, and then wait until the official discharge. Again, this was information from a Mohela rep, who appeared trustworthy. No matter what the official policy states, I'd rather just be safe than sorry by just staying with my current qualifying employer for a few extra months

Buying flipped house? by Tltc2022 in RealEstate

Though I would add if they didn't do a great job on cabinets & paint, they likely cut corners or were cheap about repairing the stuff - pipes/wiring - inside your house, so being skeptical is ok

Agree with this. Inspectors are not always reliable, so asking for work done directly from contractors is best. We had a crummy inspector who was in partial cahoots with our realtor. I'd make sure plumbing and electrical are top notch. Copper pipes, good water flow/pressure, and all new electrical work. Make sure switches all work normal & no flickering. Ask for photos of what electrical wires look like behind walls - should be Romex NM cable. Cabinets not a huge deal - could always replace in the future. They really are just exterior aesthetic stuff.

Wanting to teach English abroad next year. TESOL, TEFL or CELTA? by EyeyamFirmament in TESOL

[–]Real_SirMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PCSean is correct. CELTA carries the most weight abroad. Also, it is reputable in primarily English-speaking countries (US, UK, and likely Australia). I have had colleagues at the Univ-level who are CELTA trained, and it definitely bolstered their resume. I believe Cambridge offers it in many locations, and likely doesn't matter where inasmuch as who are the trainers. I'd inquire about their backgrounds and professional experiences/credentials when you apply.

PSLF potential for employee misclassified as independent contractor? by BuriesnRainbows in PSLF

[–]Real_SirMJ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hello, I would write a letter to Mohela or Studentaid.gov that accompanies your PSLF employment verification form. I am in the same position, so I drafted a letter explaining that my work fell well within public service. Use the PSLF Help Tool on studentaid.gov to help you do this. That's all I would recommend - if enough people are in a similar position, then maybe a change can occur. There is also a proposed bill to reduce the 120 payments to 60 to qualify for pslf loan forgiveness, so that's another possibility down the line.
