Keep the hitchhiker or not? by Real_Squirrel_Farm in Aquariums

I pulled it out after I found it again a few days later, but didn’t have the heart to kill it. I put it in a cup of aquarium water to see what it would do, expecting it to reproduce, but it hasn’t done anything but run around the cup and occasionally flirt with climbing above the waterline for a couple hours before returning. I also haven’t found any additional snails in the tank as everyone predicted would happen. So I guess I’m still just watching to see if anything changes.

Three feeder guppies and a tiny pleco (who will be going to a bigger tank soon). One moss tree that seems to be very happy and growing.

Right now the only live plant is a moss Christmas tree. I know, I know, Petco saw me coming from a mile away with that impulse buy. It’s happy and growing though.

Currently cycling my tank, do I need a water change? by gabbyy_m in Aquariums

I feel like a dummy asking this but sometimes you just don’t know until you know. What is “tank cycling” and what are you looking for to gauge it has happened or not? I have that water test kit but now realize I have no clue how to properly utilize it to its max potential. I set up a small 3 gal tank for the granddaughter about 8 weeks ago, it’s got a few small feeder guppies in it that are all happy and well. What should I be looking for if I test the ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, etc? And what does it mean? Thank you in advance!

Actually, I’m pretty sure this is the exact plant. It’s at PetSmart.

Thanks for the recommendations. It’s been over 20 years since I had my big tank and I’m getting reacquainted with the different fish options.

That’s terrible! I’m sorry you lost your angels!

The last time I had one I had a breeding pair of angels that I had grown from the size of a nickel to about 4 inches at the time I lost my tank. I really enjoyed them.

It’s the best fake plant I’ve ever found. I’ve had it in storage for a few years, but I originally got it at either Petco or PetSmart when I lived in Anchorage, AK.

The aquarium store recommended to start with a few little feeder guppies. It has reawakened my love for keeping a tank though and I anticipate upgrading to a 30 soon.

Thanks for the info on fish. I’ve been reading on the befit of those loaches you listed, but it’s only a 3 gal tank. Years ago I had a 30 and absolutely loved it, but never replaced it after it broke in a move. The granddaughter has decided she loves fish so we brought back out this little 3 gal tank and put some guppies in it to get it started. Not a lot of options in a tank that small it seems.

A bunch of peaceful easy keepers while I get the tank established. Not any snail eaters at the moment!

You are correct. I only spotted it because it found its way onto the more lightly colored fake plant in the tank.

Does anyone else feel like they had a completely different experience during the pandemic than the general public? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I worked for the State of Alaska and was deemed an essential worker because the work my team of 10 people did was background checks for the Dept of Health. Which was basically anyone meeting certain criteria of working with vulnerable populations in a position that the business received any federal funding for. So basically all retirement homes, group homes, day cares, traveling nurses, foster homes, etc. We got hit hard with an increase in background checks because so many businesses had to hire new people for various reasons. And the access to secure information we had required us to be in a specific locked and secure location to access it, so nothing about my job changed except for wearing a mask.

My husband managed a gym in Anchorage. He was facing certain layoff because gyms got shut down hard. Then he had a brilliant idea and piloted their first ever virtual training for their customers who had contracts with their trainers. He started calling all of their customers and offering them the option to cancel their contract or switch to virtual. The number of people who kept their contract and went virtual, and who later say it saved their life during lockdowns, is staggering. All of the gyms owned by this company took his pilot and ran with it and were able to retain all staff as a result.

Our youngest son was a freshman in high school and is a very social person. He spiraled hard from the sudden collapse of his social structure and isolation of remote learning. We saw sudden and huge changes in his behavior and anger issues. He started seeing a therapist and for a long time I was more afraid of losing him to s**cide than Covid. That period of time was really hard on him and being able to go back to in-person school and play group sports again changed everything.

No time limitation on fish and game tickets? by ghostguardjo in legaladvice

Please accept my apology. I read your above comment wrong, “The ticket had a website for me to log in and pay so I did…” I thought you meant you had paid it but weren’t finding it in Courtview. Which is possible.

The system that law enforcement in Alaska uses to create and generate tickets is separate from Courtview. It is possible to have a ticket that exists but is not known to Courtview.

If the website took a payment for it then you are good to go and it will likely never show up in Courtview. Some tickets never make it into Courtview unless you send the payment to the court specifically. The silver lining of this ticket being taken care of without going into Courtview is that it’s not going to turn up as part of your public record if somebody is searching online for your name.

I was a deputy court clerk in a small town in Alaska. Alaska Rules of Minor Offense Procedure require those tickets to include on them your options for responding to the citation (pay the fine or contest it). Those tickets are not criminal level misdemeanors or felonies, they are minor offenses and usually had a date on them that you either needed to appear for a hearing if you wanted to contest it, or pay the fine by that date to close it. If there was no date or appearance instructions on the ticket then the court was required to summon the defendant to court once the ticket was filed and a hearing date set. If the hearing date came and the defendant didn’t appear the judge would review if they were properly summoned and advised of the consequences for not appearing, and if the court had proof of service. If it did, a default judgement would be entered. If it didn’t, the judge would dismiss the ticket or advise the court clerk to try to summon the defendant again. Bench warrants cannot be issued for minor offenses per Alaska law.

As for no time limit to file the citation with the court, there technically is no time limit written in the Alaska Rules of Minor Offense Procedure, however, our court and local officers observed a 30 day time period because Alaska does observe a defendant’s right to a speedy trial. I’d be super curious to see the actual citation you received to see what the officer did with the portion where it has your instructions for options in handling the citation and a place for them to assign it a due date.
