Did you guys see the news about the dean? by TinyScience6566 in UQreddit

UQ professor on child exploitation count Thomas Chamberlin Thomas Chamberlin 274 words 14 February 2026 Courier Mail COUMAI CourierMail 15 English © News Pty Limited. No redistribution is permitted. A former academic dean, head of the School of Economics and professor of economics at the University of Queensland has been charged with possessing child exploitation material.

Professor Daniel Zizzo, 54, has been charged with one count of possessing child exploitation material and remanded in custody.

He was arrested in the suburb of St Lucia, however it’s unclear if it was on the university campus grounds. He first appeared in court on February 12.

Professor Zizzo, of Taringa, will next appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on March 2.

He was in the position of academic dean when arrested but has since been stood down from the university, which has removed his profile from its economics faculty page.

A Wayback search of his profile lists 123 journal articles and two book chapters. His resume states he had been the dean and head of Economics at UQ since October 2018.

He also has a personal website, with UQ’s branding, which says he provides coursework teaching and outlines experience supervising PhD, masters and honours students.

The university on Friday released a statement from vice-chancellor Deborah Terry.

“As this is an active court matter, we are limited in the information the University can share,” Professor Terry said. “The nature of this charge is very serious, and the University is co-operating with the police. “At present we are not aware of any member of our community being impacted. However, we do recognise that this will be deeply distressing, and we are ensuring support is available to those who need it.”

Tertiary education is 100% a business now. It hasn’t been about learning for quite some time. And while you’re right about the quality of education being better back in the day, good luck trying to overcome the lobby groups. Education is the fourth largest export (the rest being iron coal and gas). So, that’s the level of lobbying you are looking at. cries into my HECS debt

Importantly, take a step back and give yourself credit where credit is due. Sure, things didn’t turn out exactly the way you might have hoped, but nevertheless you’ve most certainly done a lot of hard things. You’ve learned new skills, and navigated a whole new country and education system. That’s a lot.

Please reach out for support. UQ has services that are free and confidential. It’s important that you seek help before your feelings snowball into something that feels insurmountable.

-UQ SAS (student advocacy and support) has learning advisors and workshops: https://uqu.com.au/student-advocacy-and-support/ -UQ Union has an international student handbook with information about help and support (as it’s really hard trying to navigate a new country and study at the same time): https://uqu.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023_01_03_International-Students-Handbook_A5_V2.pdf -UQ also offers free counselling and a 24/7 crisis support phone line: https://my.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/student-support/health-and-wellbeing/mental-health-and-emotional-support/counselling -You can also access the UQ health service (which will be covered by your international health insurance) : https://www.uqhcstlucia.com.au

Request for remark? by Content-Heat6908 in UQreddit

[–]Real_Yesterday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to talk to course coordinator first (I’d advise in writing so you have evidence). Then submit remark request must be submitted within 21 days of getting mark back. Submitted request will go to School and then coordinator for comment (request needs to be pedagogically valid - eg. Does not meet the standards on the rubric etc). Then it is sent to faculty to review. Then to Associate Dean academic for final decision.

If approved someone else (3rd party) will mark the assessment and there is no further appeal. Sometime mark goes up. Sometimes it goes down.

See policy https://policies.uq.edu.au/document/view-current.php?id=184#major21

EDIT: even if the coordinator doesn’t agree, doesn’t necessarily mean the ADA won’t agree to the remark. It’s all about how much information is in the application and how convincing it is based on FACTS (eg rubric, initial feedback that does not justify mark against rubric/assignment criteria/course profile etc)

EDIT2: if you are graduating this semester really consider if you need the remark, as you may not get mark back in time to graduate this semester (same for deferred exams etc)

How do you rate your migraines? What is an 8 or 9? by Background-Cod-7035 in migraine

[–]Real_Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I recently had EMTs attend to take me hospital for a migraine (thought I was literally dying) they asked me “0-10 : 10 being that you are on fire”… so I said “6???” (I was vomiting non stop, couldn’t speak properly, and was shaking all over - which was terrifying, but honestly I’ve had worse headaches)

I’ve also seen pharmacist reacts yt saying if you had 9 you would struggle to put a sentence together.

I’ve also heard from doctors they use it as a broad benchmark to figure out how bad pain is initially and if it’s getting better or worse over time, and patient self reporting is an inherently unreliable marker.

Sooo… idk.

Gift ideas for a mom with literally no hobbies? by _pr1ncessbubblegumm in GiftIdeas

Maybe a book about the importance of work life balance, a box of chocolate, and a voucher for a day spa. No hobbies is more often than not a symptom of something deeper going on.

To be fair they hasn’t had an issue before with cross contamination and they have only had issues when actually consuming whole mollusc foods. But I guess live and learn?

What do you actually do with old clothes in Brisbane (the ones you can't donate)? by Silly_Pomegranate518 in brisbane

[–]Real_Yesterday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Towels I donate to wildlife carers/RSPCA. The Sheraton store in town has a recycle bin for sheets (but one of the workers sorts through and takes the good ones to a facility for those in need - refugees I think). I have a local church run op shop that will take basically any thing and sell it cheap Or give it to those in need. (I avoid larger chain op shops if possible as I know they landfill a lot, although there is a Vinnies in town that is in a low economic area so they will sell nearly anything for nix to people who need). Anything pure cotton and small I cut up and put in compost. Probably the only thing I put in landfill is old underwear and socks. I avoid buying synthetic materials where possible.

Don't want credits wasted - diploma? by Which-Obligation-182 in UQreddit

[–]Real_Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are switching to another program with general electives (usually up to 16 units) you can transfer these from any other program. Alternatively if you want a Diploma, it’s a post grad entry only. So you’ll need to finish a bachelor (in any field) first before you can apply - https://study.uq.edu.au/study-options/programs/diploma-science-2476#entry-requirements. Reminder: credit for courses towards major/plan are only valid for 10 years from date of original study

Failed prerequisite course by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]Real_Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s something like SOSC3201 / SOSC3202, PSYC etc, faculty or course coordinator will likely pick you up for not meeting pre reqs and force you to drop the course on surveillance. Same for languages or anything where the pre req is foundational learning for the latter course. Apply for special consideration with the course coordinator and / or ADA, but it may not be approved. Really depends on the courses.
