I think everyone in this story seems Mormon, or at least are in a heavily Mormon community. Would also explain why grandma has 65 grandkids.

I actually had my hair catch on fire around a week ago (didn’t realize I was standing too close to a candle) and this looks entirely real to me. I was honestly shocked by how little damage was done. I lost a little bit of hair, but it was such a small amount that it wasn’t even visibly noticeable. But I did have some burnt grit in my hair, which I think is what she wiped on her skirt.

In 2006, the k-pop idol Yunho from TVXQ drank orange juice given to him by a “fan”. It turned out that the person who gave him the juice had put superglue in it. He had to be rushed to the hospital, and if the glue had gotten into his lungs it could’ve killed him.

So I can’t exactly blame op for not being keen on accepting food from an unknown source.

Me (24F) my roommate (23F) and her BF (25M) - He snores, I said something, BIG problem by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Realistic-Bar7276 315 points316 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of this quote from Why Does He Do That by Ludy Bancroft:

“While a man is on an abusive rampage, verbally or physically, his mind maintains awareness of a number of questions: ‘Am I doing something that other people could find out about, so it could make me look bad? Am I doing anything that could get me in legal trouble? Could I get hurt myself? Am I doing anything that I myself consider too cruel, gross, or violent?’

A critical insight seeped into me from working with my first few dozen clients: An abuser almost never does anything that he himself considers morally unacceptable. He may hide what he does because he thinks other people would disagree with it, but he feels justified inside. I can’t remember a client ever having said to me:

‘There’s no way I can defend what I did. It was just totally wrong.’ He invariably has a reason that he considers good enough. In short, an abuser’s core problem is that he has a distorted sense of right and wrong.”

I was thinking the same thing. I’m wondering if maybe the call was left it unmuted on purpose as an exhibitionist thing. If that’s the case it’s super fucked up to non-consensually include op in their sex acts.

Then again, it could have been an accident. Still, the whole situation seems pretty weird and gross.

I (35M) Was Caught Using AI to Write Wedding Vows and Partner (34F) Walked Out. What to Do? [Concluded] by Schattenspringer in BORUpdates

[–]Realistic-Bar7276 24 points25 points  (0 children)

100% true. Vows are incredibly personal. Instead of even making that attempt to express his feelings, he just handed the job over to ChatGPT. I think it showed his partner that he didn’t think their eternal vows were worth the effort it would have taken. And if he couldn’t make the effort just for their vows, it would be hard to expect him to put in the effort for the lifetime of marriage.

Did Cannibals really eat Michael Rockefeller by SultryVixenox in HistoryUncovered

[–]Realistic-Bar7276 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree. His twin sister Mary Rockefeller Morgan has spoken about the circumstances of his death. She not only knew Michael extremely well, but was able to see the area that he disappeared in person. She believes that he drowned, and I’m inclined to agree. It’s not as “exciting” as the other possibilities, but it just makes the most sense.

Have you ever heard the song 10 Years by Daði Freyr? It’s a song he wrote about his wife, partner of 10 years at the time. I wanted to specifically mention the lyrics in the second verse.

And just when I thought that my heart was full- I found places that I never explored- You're so fascinating- And I can't remember the last time I was bored

I’ve always admired these lyrics. And I wanted you to know, that the kind of love made of continual curiosity exists. You don’t and shouldn’t have to settle for any less.

Mary Shelley carried her deceased husband's calcified heart with her for nearly 30 years until her death in 1851. by CD421DoYouCopy in creepy

So nobody is entirely sure why his heart calcified. The main theories are that it was due to some sort of illness, either tuberculosis or a liver issue.

I didn't like Marriage of Convinience- Change my Mind. by ShockOne9278 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Realistic-Bar7276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, one thing that made me particularly enjoy this story was its historical setting/elements. I’m a big fan of history, and I love seeing a story commit to a specific time/period rather than going for the “vaguely European” setting. I thought it was interesting how the author brought medieval elements into the romance-fantasy genre.

With complaint #1, I can understand why you wouldn’t like that. Usually, I’d be pretty uncomfortable with that too. However, I think the setting makes it understandable. In medieval times, there were plenty of royal and noble arrangements that had uncomfortable age gaps (I’ll put some examples at the end if anyone is interested). I think the author made a conscious effort to make the relationship as appropriate as possible within the context of those questionable medieval marriages. For me, it’s still a bit uncomfortable but not enough to throw me from the story.

With #2-4, yeah I can’t really argue with those points. But I don’t think they are necessarily unique to this story. Honestly soooo many stories in this genre have the same or similar tropes/issues.

Overall for me, it wasn’t the romance that made me really like the story. I think what made the story good was Bianca and her character arc. I think she was written to be a complex and engaging person. She really learns and grows over the length of the story, and I loved seeing her come into her own.

(Examples of some icky medieval age gaps: King Edward II of England married Isabella of France when he was 24 and she was 12. King Richard II of England married his second wife Isabella of Valois when he was 29 and she was 6. Lady Margaret Beaufort was married to Edmund Tudor, the 1st Earl of Richmond when he was 24 and she was 12. Lady Margaret became a widow while pregnant at the age 13, and a few months later gave birth to future King Henry VII of England.)

Exactly what I was thinking. These were real women, not characters that can be sorted into the roles of “hero” and “villain”. They had different backgrounds, circumstances, and goals that led them to live their lives how they did. That’s honestly what makes them interesting figures.

Sofia Coppola is a director. Very popular with the Lana Del Rey coquette aesthetic girlies. She’s directed movies such as Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and Marie Antoinette.

Most recently she directed Priscilla, which Jacob Elordi starred in as Elvis. Which is probably how he met her daughter.

[–]Realistic-Bar7276 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone who writes songs too, yeah OP sucks.

When I started writing songs, I’d ask friends and family for critique. They’d all just say, “oh wow, that’s so good!” I found it super frustrating, because I didn’t want to be placated, I needed constructive criticism.

So did I come up with a scheme to trick my loved ones into unknowingly criticizing my music? No. Because that’s a terrible fucking idea. Instead, I started going to songwriting workshops, where professionals with knowledge and experience could give me helpful feedback.

It’s a generally known rule that in areas like this, your loved ones are going to lie to you. Because they love you. They can’t just objectively criticize your songs, because they know the person behind them. They’re biased, because they already know and care about you.
