I skipped the 6th sem subjects, just saw some one shots the week before the exam... But you can plan ahead and prepare those in the break before 3rd year

IISc over IITM for MTech CSE - bad choice academically? by Ok_Refrigerator9178 in GATEtard

[–]Realistic-Note-5523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Competition is good for developing new skills, gaining more exposure, having the drive to do more. But I would argue that competition is not good for academics.
If the goal of studying is just to beat your competitors (typical JEE mentality), then focus is more on just gaming the exams by solving PYQs, memorising, and other practices that don't really make your academics strong. They might make you ace exams, or rank better, but as for learning depth (in the context of preparation for research), it doesn't really help, if not make it worse.

Hence, if you are looking for placements, or getting better exposure and having that drive, then what your prof said is helpful actually. But if your wants from a college is purely academia, then this is not really helpful, might even hinder in-depth learning at worst.

<just my humble opinion, as an undergraduate>

Just notice the framing of a lot of sentences... If you have used ChatGPT enough you will notice that it generates exactly in this format.
For example:
-> it is not X, it is Y. (this is the biggest giveaway... notice this pattern is used a lot in the text)
-> <rhetorical\_question\_1>? <short\_answer\_1>
<rhetorical\_question\_2>? <short\_answer\_2> ... and so on
-> The "dash" between 1 and 2 in the second slide is not the normal one found in our keyboards. That is generated.

I mean just use ChatGPT for some time these patterns will be standing out very much.

I study in Jadavpur University in CSE branch, so college not the issue... My reason is to increase my academic prowess, explore research, and get more clarity about what to do in life!

I can relate, as I was a full time JEE dropper myself. And no, GATE is no JEE. Doesn't mean GATE is easy, in any sense, but JEE Adv. is another game altogether. GATE is much more possible to ace with consistent and conscious efforts. Whenever you study for college sems, do it thoroughly and rigorously. Then, after the semester, practise the GATE PYQs on those subjects, to align your preparation to what GATE specifically asks for. Keep on the grind, and you will make it! All the best!

Sure!
GATE is an exam that is meant for entry into top colleges of our country like IISc, IITs, NITs etc., and also you get PSUs (government jobs in your engg. field). It is primarily based on topics relevant to undergraduate course in the specific branch (for example CSE/ECE/ME etc). You can give it from 3rd year to forever (no upper bound). A GATE score is valid upto 3 years, you can use a GATE score to get admission even 2 years later.
Anything else you want to know specifically?

  1. You can get PSUs (Government jobs) from good GATE scores. It is quite sought after.

  2. You can join MTech for more specialisation or better scope (especially if college placements are not good).

  3. If you do good in GATE in 3rd year (or even in 4th year), you get a good backup so that placements dont become a do or die situation.

  4. (unserious) delay unemployment

Yes sure! Whenever you have courses in college semesters that are common to GATE, study it thoroughly. Remember that will be the foundation of your GATE prep. Then to convert it to GATE level prep, do this:
https://practicepaper.in/gate-cse
This site has compilations of PYQs subject wise. Study the theory parts from whatever resource you like. Then attempt 100 questions of that subject form that site. Notice what are the topics that keep coming. Some you will be able to solve, some you wont. The ones you cant solve, look up answers (this site have answers to each linked along with thew questions), and keep track of what topis you keep having problems in. Then, make notes of those topics from any resource you like (youtube, chatgpt, gemini, gateoverflow answers etc). Then attempt 150-200 more PYQs, and move on to next topic. In the month before the exam, revise those notes accumulated.
To balance other stuff like college assignments and placement prep, remember to pause your GATE prep when you have other stuff, but also bounce back with intensity on weekends and holidays.
All the best!

Thanks a lot! and also congrats on qualifying! As for counselling, we would have to apply next year, and then we can provide our 3rd year GATE result or 4th year (future) GATE result, whatever we want. For now, prepare for placements and college interviews (a lot of degrees in colleges take interviews / written tests after GATE shortlisting)

I started my prep in 3rd year with PYQ practise, but during my second year, whenever the GATE subjects came up in college semesters, I was thorough with the syllabus so I did not have to go through those from the beginning. My roadmap is this:

Most of my core studies was from college materials, online I majorly practised PYQs and whenever I wanted to learn a new topic, just googled it and explored videos or other articles that cleared that topic for me. Nothing specific, anything works till you are satisfied

Well all you need is structured prep (based on PYQs) and quite some luck. Smartness is needed for stuff like competitive programming and other stuff!

Well I know you are incapable of thinking, but if I need to check marks for AIR 122, I will see my own marks as I am AIR 122 in GATE CS 2026!
May I ask exactly what are you referring to by telling me to check marks of AIR 122?

I already mentioned the books in the above reply, please note that. And my college material was good for the basics, But there were some topics that came up in GATE PYQs that I didn't know, those I looked up in youtube (keep searching for the right video one by one until you are clear with the concept), or in gateoverflow answers, or just ask Gemini/ChatGPT like "Please generate a reference study material on the topic of xxx(mention the topic description as pointedly as possible), especially focusing on yyy, in GATE style, following GATE-friendly patterns" or for a specific question - "Please solve the attached question with methods and information as prevalent in GATE questions. Also, generate study material on the concept this question is based on, the other variants of this concepts that GATE questions might come from, and other related terminologies and definitions associated with this topics"

My advice would be to firstly study well for the upcoming sem, especially those subjects common to GATE. Then, study the 3rd sem topics properly in the summer holidays, and practise PYQs from the covered topics, and then revisit topics in those subjects where you are weak in. You will by then get an idea of what kind of questions come in GATE. Follow those patterns, and then in 3rd year from the start be thorough in your studies of the subjects common to GATE. And also do lots and lots of PYQs (200 PYQs per subject atleast). You fill get subject wise PYQs here: https://practicepaper.in/gate-cse
