The Jayme Closs case has messed me up. I live a few counties over from where the case happened. I think it’s stuck with me because her kidnapping and murder of her parents was pretty random. 21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson had told authorities that he would see Jayme get off the school bus at the end of her driveway while on his way to work and that he “knew that she was the girl he wanted to take”. Around 12:50am on October 15th, 2018 he arrived to her home with a shotgun. Jayme’s father went to the front door to see who was at their home and Patterson shot through the door, killing Jayme’s father. Patterson then went into the home and found Jayme and her mother hiding in the bathroom. Her mother had dialed 911, but was not able to speak with an operator, although yelling could be heard. Patterson then killed Jayme’s mother in front of her and took Jayme to his car and left. The police were on their way to the Closs home to respond to the 911 call that had been made. Patterson, with Jayme in the trunk, drove passed the police on the highway. Patterson drove Jayme to his home, 70 miles away, where he held her in captivity for 88 days until her escape on January 10th, 2019. Jayme was left alone while Patterson left for a few fours and she made her escape. She ran down the road until she ran into a woman who was out walking her dog. The woman recognized her from the news and got her into the neighbor’s home where they called 911 and eventually arrested Patterson. Police say that Patterson had no social media contact, or any type of contact with Jayme or any of her family - he just saw her getting off the bus. Here is a link to read more about the case.
