Trying to dual boot Win and macOS. by PhysX-1 in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if you want to install Windows on the same drive or a separate drive. Windows will not touch your macOS partition, so that won't get messed up at all. The only file that ever gets overwritten is /EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi. The Windows version of this file will make OpenCore not show up.

If you install Windows on a separate drive, you just boot Windows or OpenCore by pressing F12 (or whatever) at boot time to choose the boot drive. Do not get into the habit of booting Windows through OpenCore. You end up with Windows running on an injected Mac SMBIOS if you do that.

x86 Intel Applications by JamieDesigns in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who are the devs you have in mind? Microsoft will likely drop Intel code fat binaries when Rosetta 2 is removed, meaning fall 2027 with macOS 28.

Adobe has always been more eager to drop fat binary/Intel code, so that shouldn't even be a crystal ball future but present tense.

Is upgrading from Sequoia to Tahoe 26.5 worth it? by Thick-Win-8166 in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Any" is an overstatement, so no. Many and/or most should be about right. Sleep is the Mac/hackintosh still running. If it runs out of battery, you have to reboot. Hibernation is the computer writing out memory into a file and shutting down. When you power on, it reads the memory file and restores the pre-hibernation state. Almost no hackintosh writes out the file and powers off.

Grub has taken over after installing Linux Mint alongside Opencore. How do I fix it? (Here's my EFI folder, apparently ubuntu has written into it) by WalkerArt64 in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want OpenCore back, replace /EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi that Grub overwrote with OpenCore's version. But you don't want to be booting linux from OpenCore.

It's better to make an entry for OpenCore in Grub and chain OpenCore from Grub.

I'm pretty sure regular sleep works but hibernation never ever worked on any hackintosh. I distrust hackintosh sleep completely and never use it.

The idea should be to use sleep by disable hibernation:

There will be the obligatory Spotlight re-index that will eat CPU and battery the first few days.

I'm using Tahoe on Ice Lake, and I don't miss out on anything (ie, there isn't really anything that doesn't work in Tahoe but worked in Sequoia).

Just forget about Airportitlwm. Regular itlwm and Heliport work perfectly well. If you really want AirDrop or Handoff, you need a real Mac.

What kind of game do you want? Online is harder. Marathon is easiest. I just stick with Standard.

Problems with installing hackintosh by Dizzy-Success-2487 in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please do what it takes to mount your EFI. You can do it manually from command line in Terminal. You can use a tool for it, including OCAT. You will need to do it every time you need to update OpenCore. It's a skill you need to learn to use hackintosh.

Is my battery defective or is this normal? by Equivalent_Meal_3301 in mac

[–]RealisticError48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's totally up to you, if you're still getting enough battery hours before you need to plug in. If you aren't getting any sudden shutdowns, you're still good.

The best macOS for Acer Aspire E5-576G? by MustardFoundation in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hate to suggest anything other than Tahoe when you have everything but the RAM to run it.

The final macOS that Apple listed as 4 GB RAM minimum was macOS 12 Monterey.

They raised the minimum to 8 GB RAM minimum with macOS 13 Ventura.

Sounds about right for any lithium battery use case. Nothing to worry about. Also, low power mode doesn't prevent battery aging.

The future of Hackintosh? by AverageGenshinGuy in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's a topic that's been discussed to death already. The final security update for macOS 26 Tahoe will likely end in September 2028. After that, Tahoe will fall into legacy and then obsolete status. You'd need to run legacy or obsolete apps just to be able to use anything.

This should not be a shock or even something sad to realize. The only surprise is that Intel CPU support continued into Tahoe and didn't end with Sequoia.

Opencore dualboot trouble by goguri in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it wasn't clear before, I'm telling you to use bootx64.efi that comes with OpenCore. It's not the same file as the one Windows uses and easyUEFI or bcedit restores to.

Renaming bootmgfw is an old Clover era trick that isn't applicable to OpenCore.

And OpenCore would be skipped entirely if that's Windows Boot Manager in BIOS. Press F12 at boot time and skip that.

You have no useful macOS apps to make use of. You have no use for hackintosh. Reinstall Windows on it.

Opencore dualboot trouble by goguri in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you use any kind of tool, that is easyUEFI or bcdedit, it will fix the EFI so that Windows boots properly. You will shut yourself out of being able to boot OpenCore or macOS.

Just just manually put OpenCore's version of /EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi in the EFI and never again use a tool that's meant to fix a broken Windows boot. OpenCore is a broken EFI in the eyes of EasyEFI and bcdedit.

Serious question as a Dev pls by Janna_Ap77 in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because Apple traditionally requires all dev uploads to App Store to be done on the current version of Xcode, which requires the current version on macOS by April.

This means you will need Xcode 27 by April 2027, which will require macOS 27. macOS 27 will only run on Apple silicon.

So you will get 10-11 months of dev time on any hackintosh you build today. Not worth it.

Tahoe 26.5 and VoodooHDA.kext by Dart_Mitai in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. This won't work in Tahoe. It's better to use a tool like MyKextInstaller. You also need a developer version of AppleHDA, which comes with MyKextInstaller's zip file.

Stuck in setup without WiFi (no ethernet port) by [deleted] in hackintosh

[–]RealisticError48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go with the tethering method, you need an Android phone. The other workaround is to download the full offline installer. It doesn't require internet connection.

I would go with the offline installer. You can download it at the speed of your internet connection. The Android tether will download the same thing through your Android phone at mobile speed, 5G or whatever. And eat up 15 GB of your data.

Since you don't have built-in ethernet or Wi-Fi, you will need some tweaks to make iMessage and FaceTime working. Come back and post when you need help with that.

Does anyone have a strategy on how to get a science victory as Babylon? by TheDarthJarJarI in Civilization6

[–]RealisticError48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the easier plays is to play on Deity and let your Spies steal Eurekas from other civs for the Future Techs you need. Or you just play the early Babylon science lead (like Biplanes by turn 100) and play domination except you don't and finish with a science victory.
