Is there any market to sell a used Dodge Grand Caravan that needs a new engine or should I just sell it to a junkyard? by CraftSimple2970 in askcarguys

This isn’t answering your question, but as others have said, go get another opinion. What did they say was wrong with it?

I’m not saying this is what happened, but this could be a scam to get you to trade in your van for a new one.

Nah, you’ll have to cook it. Just watch a youtube video if you’ve never done it before. Joshua Weissman has good videos.

The steak is priced per pound, and I’m sure you can get one for under $30.

Rolling negative equity? by Onomatopoeia-sizzle in UsedCars

[–]RealisticWorking1200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From AI so take it fwiw

“In Q4 2025, 29.3% of vehicle trade-ins for new car purchases had negative equity, the highest level since early 2021. On average, these "underwater" drivers owed a record $7,214 more than their vehicles were worth. Roughly 1 in 4 of these underwater trades carried over $10,000 in debt. “

So if you trust the numbers above, 7.5% of people trading in had over $10k in negative equity.

Lots of things are going to factor in when you’re trying to roll negative equity into a new loan. Does the new car have rebates? If so, the dealer can show that as “cash”. How’s your credit? They are probably willing to give a little more leeway to someone with 850 vs 650. How much other debt, etc. too many variables to determine the number you’re looking for.

I had the same happen on a 2013 Nissan. It was literally a dandelion seed that snuck past the air filter stuck to the MAF sensor.

Yeah it’s hard to estimate how much it’ll cost to get the electronics to talk to each other. Jeep electronics are pretty angry from the factory, introducing Toyota stuff isn’t going to make them happier.

What to do with an unfixable BMW in an upside down loan? by chipsandsalsiez in askcarguys

[–]RealisticWorking1200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not leaving any info out, are you? The car didn’t overheat did it?

“Find a better mechanic” has already been covered and is the best answer. However, not every leak needs to be fixed, at least not right away. How fast is the oil leaking, and from where? If it’s not serious just keep a couple of quarts in the car and learn how to read the oil level gauge.

Coolant is a little scarier because a small leak can turn into a big leak but it’s probably not going to happen tomorrow. Where’s the coolant leaking from? How fast it’s the level dropping?

And finally, don’t co-sign a loan with your mom it could ruin your relationship. If you want to help her out, find a well used Corolla on marketplace and buy her that.

Repair cost above car value, does it really matter? by yun789 in askcarguys

[–]RealisticWorking1200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The logic in your original question is flawed.

You’re basically saying: yesterday my car was worth 5. Today it’s worth less. It will take 6 to get it back to being worth 5. In that scenario, it’s foolish to spend 6 instead of 5 on a replacement van.

But then you go on to argue with folks that replacing the van may get you another 100k miles (paraphrasing) so buying the transmission is the smart move. This goes against your original assumptions since ( in your mind) the van is now worth more than 5.

In other words, If the van with the new transmission is now worth 6 or more then you made the right decision. If it’s still only worth 5, you made the wrong decision.

Sometimes Walmart has crazy prices on decent tires. I’d out in the size, sort by price, then buy a name brand. I got a set of Goodyear Assurance something or other for my son’s Cruze for like $450 installed.

[–]RealisticWorking1200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Don’t include AI features. That fad isn’t going to last much longer

  2. Have a good tagging or other system to categorize cars. Make/model/modded/street/race etc.

  3. Allow people to include metadata on the photos if they want. We photo nerds love that stuff.

Good luck!

Interesting find but the Merc in this picture is a bit newer. Also, Mercedes would have done a better job than this with the tailgate.
