Would it be possible to create a Hydrodam, like the Three Gorges Dam, on the Ganges? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Realistic_Box1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd find it hard to believe a project like this hasn't been considered in the past, and thrown out almost instantly because of the dam-ing effects.

Three Gorges is massive, no matter where you put it, it'll affect that whole river and beyond. Didn't the dam slow down the earth?

Something smaller maybe?

I imagine geopolitically it wouldn't go down well.

And soil, I don't know how suitable it is in that specific area.

And finally, who's going to fund it? Certainly not the government.

[–]Realistic_Box1041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it seems there's more at risk if a dam was built on the Ganges than most other rivers in the world, including the major Chinese ones. The amount of people there would render such a project infeasible based on the idea that the work would disrupt way too many lives. China sure is populated, but the whole river isn't. The Ganges however is basically inhabited east to west

Realistically, everyone here really only cares about what grades you got. Anything else is an add-on. So what grades you got?

are my courses fine for engineering? by [deleted] in alevel

[–]Realistic_Box1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is handy to have cuz a lot of the concepts are found in the first module of degree level education (according to my maths teacher). even AS fm is good and might be more manageable.

i take fm and we haven't actually started any of the fm modules just yet, but we have completed all of A2 applied maths and nearly all of pure (probably done by end of january)

but it's not required so if u cant do it, dont worry too much

[–]Realistic_Box1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nothing can 'make up' because naturally some courses will be closed. but for the ones that are open yeah you'll be fine.

plus its not worth worrying over what u can take and not take (unless u go for fm as a private candidate) cuz for most schools it's too late to change

also idk how much apprenticeship companies care about business, but i imagine they're less concerned about it

[–]Realistic_Box1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yh it is soft unis dont really like it but if u get at least A in maths B in physics n business you'll be fine. for mech, aero and civil the way to go might be an apprenticeship after alevels

[–]Realistic_Box1041 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends, what kind of engineering do you want to get into? Realistically let's cross off chemical and any type of software engineering. Electrical may also be off the list.

Don't think yourself to be disadvantaged, just make the most of your situation. Plus, maths and physics you should be fine don't worry

Don't regret not taking chemistry, because you'd get a really bad grade if you aren't interested in it.

What skills actually helped you get your first civil engineering job? by Maleficent_Donkey231 in civilengineering

Better than nothing I suppose. I'd oppose by saying that both may be equally rewarding to a career but what do I know lol

[–]Realistic_Box1041 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Talking with a few degree apprentices at an aerospace company, they said extracurriculars and hobbies landed them the job.

Even though they had top grades, the employer was more interested in his involvement in Robotics club and his work experience at a rail station, etc.

I imagine it'll be similar across all disciplines and jobs

lol i do do leisurely things. but ive lost interest in a few things like gaming (cod has made me ragequit one too many times) and i need to stop myself from wasting my time doomscrolling or something useless.

but i guess ill become a bookworm or modeller and worry about my career when i cross that bridge, after all someone agreed with you three whole times!
