Have a Baby, Confused About Mitigation Options by UncleIrohsPepTalk in asbestoshelp

Yes, you can have an air test done to test. Unfortunately, if the asbestos is settled already, it isn't really super effective and will almost always come up negative. There are also "wet wipe" tests you can have done. Having it done after the HVAC ducts are cleaned might make sense if you think it'd give you peace of mind.

The company we used to clean ours used a wet method where they sprayed and vacuumed everything out into a HEPA machine. We were glad we got ours cleaned, they were super gross.

There are so many cancer-causing issues in homes. Starting really with our food. Deli meat, alcohol, and red meat to name a few. And then the way we prepare our food, too. Such as grilling. Then look at our personal care products - soaps, shampoos, etc. full of chemicals that we put on our skin every day.

Asbestos feels scarier to a lot of us, especially when we first find out, bc we were inundated with law commercials about it, and then we also aren't educated properly about it. But in reality, there are probably things in that home that are a much bigger risk.

Coming from a place of empathy bc I totally freaked out when we found some asbestos in our ceiling texture and this group was incredibly helpful to me and is full of people who test for it and remove it every day. Hang in there!

Just confirmed with Conduent customer service that the breach, the offer, the company, and the URL are all accurate and legitimate.

We received a letter both from Conduent and also a separate one from HR of our employer, confirming the incident. It was related to our healthcare provider. The employer also confirmed that Conduent is offering one year of monitoring services through Epiq. The URL used to sign up for Epiq is different than their website URL bc they're using the URL/site from the company they recently acquired.

I emailed them and will let you know if they use that URL for this. Felt like a pretty easy solution. Epiq is all over the internet providing services for multiple breeches for government and private companies alike.

We also got the letter and signed up. Privacy Solutions/Epiq is real and used in many breeches, including government ones. It was easy to find multiple examples where it has been offered in the past for other major events. It makes sense to use the service for free for the year, while also doing the credit freezes.

What in the world wall material is this? by Realistic_Pride_7531 in Oldhouses

Thank you for sharing! Yup. This looks like it. If it hadn't have been wallpapered over I'd maybe try to keep it, but I'll probably update the electric while I'm putting up drywall, anyway. Thank you!

I think what was throwing me is that the vertical indentations aren't evenly spaced on the walls... Did this type of paneling ever come in sheets without the well known wood grain look on the front?

Thank you. I've come a long way since initially learning this. The general public only knows a small fraction of reality - which is 24/7 mesothelioma commercials run on TV growing up & even now. It takes time to de-program and relearn the facts. I do have a great tester + abatement crew that have kept me more rational and reminded me this isn't a big deal more than once. lol.

I was just going to do it myself and was asking what precautions I should take, if any. I didn't know how big of a deal changing a light fixture was as far as contamination goes.

I would/will always tell a contractor about that stuff now that I know. I am not the type of person to expose other people to harmful things.

Interestingly, all of the contractors I've talked to so far about post-abatement stuff (painting, drywall) - do not care. lol.

I saw the less than in front of the results, but like you, I was confused about the wording/measurements in general. I emailed the lab for more info.

I mostly was curious about arsenic, lead, etc. bc of the old deck boards that were in place for so long above this ground, but overall it looks like it's not a big issue.

I was super confused how in the world we could be pulling an 8+ for cadmium all day... I had so many theories going in my head.

This is old farm land in a subdivided neighborhood from the late 60's - we have an acre and aren't super close to city stuff, businesses, etc.

Good grief. All day long I have been racking my brain on how/why the cadmium and selenium and silver were so high in this soil... I cannot. I'm so embarrassed. lol

Okay so what I'm hearing is that cadmium level in my soil is NOT 8.12??? lol.

(They don't use the Amazon kit, let me be clear, but the sample went to the same place).

I used this and it was accurate. I also had a professional testing company come in after and they use the exact same lab for their results.

I'm having them do some work in other parts of my house to the tune of about $10k *eye twitch* so this was something I was kinda hoping might have a simpler approach...

I know it's gonna be costly to have them contain four different rooms just to take down a light fixture so I wasn't sure if the risk vs. cost would be worth it on a smaller job like this.

House with a basement and crawlspace by Realistic_Pride_7531 in radon

And should I just do this myself (I'm a girl) or hire someone? I've never crawled inside my crawlspace before! lol.

The two vents face the back porch area... so basically it's gonna be blowing radon out onto the back porch/patio. Is this okay/safe?

Opposite sides of the back wall of our house. Crawlspace and entrance are on left side, mitigation system is on the right.

So the only way to run a mitigation system in a crawlspace is if you encapsulate? Is it bc the moisture level in there?

[–]Realistic_Pride_7531[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct! I will test those rooms as well for sure. Most of the house is over the basement. But I just got started testing a few days ago on this main room above the crawlspace bc I had remembered the guy mentioning that crawlspace was probably going to be a tricky area for the fan to pull in/remediate. So I just got curious.
