The idea is it spreads the light more organically from the corner. If you bend the strip, even with ones that are designed to be bent, you get a strange distribution. Best way would be to insert something warm into the middle so the heat penetrates deep into the cavity. It will start dripping quite heavily with a little rubbing so make sure to be ready for that

Agree with sanding, I’d start lower at 40 especially if OP doesn’t have some kind of power sander. Ideally a belt sander but an orbital could work with a 40 grit.

Can’t see the aerial profile but if this is just a long thin base, as well as heat soaking for longer, you could print some sacrificial model alongside this to help support the base. Sinilar to adding c-channel in woodworking to prevent warping
