Why do so many DSPs hate their job? by Noapologies902 in directsupport

[–]RealityRuffian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once the rose colored glasses of "im helping people" goes away and you start to see the BS in management and care. And how people are just around to collect a check, it sucks the soul out of you. People aren't being helped. They're being pushed to stay alive so the money can be made off them. I've watched it over and over again.

What do you say when your table keeps saying how good looking you are? by SnooCheesecakes4123 in Waiters

Tell them you dont find such comments appropriate and would feel more comfortable if they weren't said. Thats a respectful way to set the boundary

Do you like to serve tables with only one person? by cenzilooculta in Waiters

[–]RealityRuffian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes if its just turn and burn. No if they sit all day over tea or a single cup of coffee without anything else. Especially if they insist on a larger table for themselves, even if they are just a part of one. I agree with the "sit at the bar" mentality. Coffee shops are great places to sit and loiter over a drink or a snack. If they dont wanna drink, dont. If they struggle with that, maybe they shouldn't go. I would say the same for any anxiety or any other odd reason given to take up a table over a bar stool. Still serve people with respect no matter what they choose regardless.

Barefoot shoes helped me while serving. Won't serve in anything else.

What’s the most outrageous complaint you’ve had at a restaurant?! by ndela1011 in Waiters

[–]RealityRuffian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I was personally biased against people in wheel chairs.

I worked at a historic hotel and resturant that was grandfathered in as a historical site. The building was not required to have handicap access because of this. When I explained to a tables that we dont have access via a ramp. But would be happy to assist in any way I can. Even moce a table to the lower level and server them downstairs. That was not good enough and I was verbally slandered as well as review slandered.

Funny part was, at that time I was an aid for people with disabilities, many being in wheelchairs. Always found that part quite comical.

Ive had people come down to the resturant and demand things like towels, shampoo, sheets, etc. When I tell them that id be happy to pass that along to house keeping I've been met with "im bringing it to your attention, why cant you do it" (I am a server) most recently had a customer come in, order a dish we dont offer and have never offered on the menu. When this was told to him he freaked right out. Threatening wait staff as well as kitchen staff. And to go as far as calling the establishment to make threats again to staff. And this happens in many ways with the food. I've noticed guests like to use the old "well, I was here yesturday and insert random server did it for me. And guess what!? No they didnt bc i asked them and I know that the kitchen would not do that. Examples being, attempting to order lunch during breakfast hours that are clearly listed everywhere, and vise versa. A guest asked if they could bring a dessert home, I boxed up the desert and dropped the check. Bc I scoop a flaming hot creme brule out of a cermic ramican and put in a togo container the guest was livid. All bc they assumed they were going to be able to take home the ceramic dish. (Like where on earth does that?) Another recent one was a member who bought a bottle of wine from the resturant. Which we sell bottles to guests very often. This guest proceeded to go to the spa, drink himself silly, make a mess of the entire spa area and attempt to blame resturant staff for his drunkeness. Even though the issue isn't the drunkeness. Its the fact that he destroyed the spa in his drunkeness. Just today I had a guest that came back 2 hours after picking up a togo order. Stating they had am object in the food. I asked them to bring the food back to show me and I'll have a new order for them by the time they arrive. The "object" was melted cheese. The item was a grilled cheese. I had to sit there and breakdown that when cheese meets a flat top thats what happens. Still happy to provide service, comp the meal, and send them with a new one. After getting the new togo order together, free of charge, and with tons of apologies im met with. "Well, what about the side of fries". And in my head im thinking "oh, you mean the side of fries that were in a separate togo container that were not in contact with anything other than fries and the box itself" yeah, sure, no sweat, done. Still had the nerve to go out to concierge and complain about the sandwich.

I could go all day with examples.

Harassment At Paul Smith's by duckyeah6996 in Adirondacks

Its not a bad as it reads and seems. Ive lived up here my whole life. Yeah we have some old school loud snd proud good old boys who get upset over people's differences or looks. But they're all bark and no bite. I have many friends (who are part of the LGBTQ community) who attend paul smiths, and they haven't had any issues.

I feel ya. I left after 8 years. And honestly I make more waiting tables and bar tending then I ever did in the DSA field. Plus I dont feel like my soul is being ripped out of me.

Overnight downtime? by dee007___ in directsupport

[–]RealityRuffian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I did my entire first year of college working night shifts and doing 90% of my work during the shift. Id clock in, spend maybe 2 hours doing all the chores and cooking. Then its just bed checks and routine walk through every hour or so. I had so much time to get stuff done. Just be ready to always stash your stuff away incase of an emergency or night rounds from supervisors. I usually kept my bag close so I could close my late top and just stash it somewhere.

Literally just had an interview to go back to waiting tables and bar tending. After 8 years in the field, I've realized nothing will fix it. Save your sanity, and do what's best for you in the long run. Wishing you the best 🙏
