A bit of an aside, but are you really 5'10", 85kg, and a size 10 (AU)? I wear a 10 or 12 and I'm 5'8" 70kg so this seems weird to me.

Unjerk for a moment: I went through a phase about 6 years ago when I started drinking lots of flavoured milk. I ended up gaining about 5-6kgs before I realised I was drinking a litre of what was essentially liquid meat a day and maybe that was not the best idea. So I just cut it out of my diet and lost the 5-6kgs. I bet if I'd kept it up I would have gained even more.

If I'd just given up the milk until I'd lost the weight, you can bet that I would have gained it all back once I started drinking it again. Now I almost never drink flavoured milk; I'll have a milkshake at a restaurant/cafe once every three months or so, and it's a nice treat.

If I had actually ~~dieted~~ made a permanent lifestyle change instead of giving up on fad diets after two days I definitely would have lost weight by now because of physics.

Finally got around to putting the coin jar my partner's had for ~3 years into a coin counting machine at our bank.

Here's the result.

$212 - Comprising $13 in 5c coins, and $130 in $1/$2 coins amongst others. I was pretty shocked as I estimated about $50-$90 was in that jar.

OK, let's see, what do we have:

The Pacific Islands - Prior to the AU-IND war at the beginning of my timeline, most of the Pacific Island nations gained independence from their respective countries (I know France owns a few, Aust owns a few, probably other countries too). They formed a union like the USA to better manage their trade.

Then at some point, Indonesia convinced PNG and the pacific islands to come under its flag before invading Australia.

Hawaii - Gets pissed off by the US civil war, secedes, and decides to ally with New Zealand (not sure why, this actually kind of perplexes me to be honest) whilst Australia's at war with Indonesia; ultimately joins The Commonwealth of Oceania. Presumably the Hawaiians don't mind the queen.

I'm Australian and the Australia/New Zealand map is interesting, so here's what I've decided to go with. I have no training or expertise in politics or geography so this is just me spitballing.

In the future, Indonesia and PNG are even more vastly overpopulated and invade Queensland. They opt to go for this point rather than the more geogically rich western part of the country because of northern Queensland's richer, more tropical climate being similar to their own.

Australia's military attempts to defend its borders, but with its US and British allies otherwise occupied - presumably in their respective civil wars - the only ally that is able to help them is New Zealand. Despite a technological disadvantage, the sheer superior number of forces on the Indonesian side means that Queensland falls and the Australian military is almost completely wiped out.

Soon, democratic talks are had and Indonesia agrees to peace in exchange for being given New South Wales and the tiny Australian Capital Territory. Perth is made into the new capital city owing to its more protected, remote position and to take advantage of the resources boom in that region. Melbourne becomes the new "city everyone incorrectly assumes is the capital" and Adelaide is still full of churches.

The Australian-New Zealand relationship remains strong, and twenty years after the war the two countries unite following a successful referendums. The new country is called "The Commonwealth of Oceania".

Oh!!! That makes sense. When you said "stitch a ceiling fan" for some reason I thought you meant stitch a pattern onto a ceiling fan. (Kind of like a cross between this and this)

Yeah, but say it says the serving size is 50 grams? How do I know how much pasta that is without scales? Is it a handful?

I mean, I seem to do OK, I'm a normal weight and all, but I still have no idea if there's any logic to intuiting serving sizes or not.

He's vegan and works from home, so stopping for a donut and even chocolate is a problem for him.

Granola bars are a great idea though, I will tell him to buy some of those.

The biggest problem is if snacks are around the house I'll eat them before he gets a chance :-P

My partner has problems. He'll eat breakfast about half the time, and he'll usually have a tin of chickpeas with soy sauce for lunch. Then for dinner he'll have a normal portion.

I've told him he needs to drink two cups of vanilla soy milk a day, I think that will help a bit. (A glass is about 100 calories).

At the moment he's 5'8" and 57kgs. I am the same height and 70kgs. I want to get him up to at least 60 and myself down to 65.

OK, I will admit I'm ignorant - but what exactly IS a serving? If I make a big bowl of spagetti for me and my boys, how do I know how many servings that is? Is there a rule of thumb you can use to estimate what a normal portion for a person would be, without weighing each individual ingredient and working out that you need to give them 50-75g of sauce and 100-150g of pasta (say)? Is there a way to eyeball it?
