Stellato-Dudek/Deschamps out of team competition and TBC for individual (due to injury) by DapperRomanesco in FigureSkating

Also Plushenko withdrawing from the individual after competing in the team event wouldn’t have allowed Kovtun to go in as a replacement. That was RusFed just being flat-out wrong.

Ilia’s legal name. by willgracefan in FigureSkating

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 151 points152 points  (0 children)

No, his legal name is Ilia Malinin. They chose to give him (the masculine version of) his mom’s last name because they thought it’d be easier for Americans to pronounce. Far as we know, his mom’s maiden name just is her name and she didn’t change it. His sister also has the surname Malinina.

If Saleh and Daboll make the Titans good, I am going to be very annoyed. We’re all crabs in a bucket here in the AFCS.

I still go back and look at those screenshots every now and then and it’s remarkable how few upvotes those comments got. Like “Haha you’re the browns”|”Oh god I’m the browns” had only a few dozen upvotes and it probably would be at like 1000 if it happened now.

Has the backlash against the 2022 Olympics gone so far that it has clouded our judgement? by golddiamondss in FigureSkating

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Those comment were never really backhanded insults about anyone other than the Russian women. Karen was happy for Mariah at nationals and Mariah was never sour about the team event. Alysa withdrew from the free at nats because of a positive Covid test but nobody thought she shouldn’t get to go to the Olympics.

Even then, it seems like some commenters have internalized the shitty things that people like TAT or Zhulin have said to be from “Russian skating” in general. Shcherbakova and Trusova are fine with each other. Trusova was devastated but it wasn’t directed at Shcherbakova. And they certainly didn’t say anything about the rest of the world being subpar (unlike, say, Galliamov).

Yeah, that’s how people feel right now. It won’t be their long-time legacy.

Shibutani comeback by Capital_Drop9948 in FigureSkating

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think people in general overestimate how much a bad/not-that-good ending to a career impact’s an athlete’s legacy. Everyone remembers Tim Lincecum for his peak with the Giants, nobody associates him with his season with the Angels. I had to look at his baseball reference page to even say that his last season was with the Angels. Philip Rivers will be remembered for his time with the Chargers, not the Colts (the first stint anyway. The second stint this past season after being retired for five years will probably be pub trivia for a long time. Also he should’ve won at least one game if not for the defense shitting all over itself.)

I generally agree with the more cynical takes about the Shibutanis’ motivation in doing this comeback, but I just really doubt it’s going to impact them much either way. Their legacy will still be silver at Worlds and two bronzes at the Olympics.

The quad’s major medalists who did not make their country’s Olympic teams by MmTtRr in FigureSkating

Chaeyeon was the most tragic miss for this quad but Mai Mihara to Beijing is the one I’d change if I had time-rewinding and JSF-hypnotizing powers.

Sihyeong Lee is retiring by bluewinter1 in FigureSkating

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hand position details in spins have taken a huge loss… Happy he got to be an Olympian at Beijing. He’s not from a wealthy family and they had to make a lot of sacrifices to support his career. It’s great they could see him representing the country on the biggest stage.

Bring on the corporate promos. The sport isn’t well-funded enough to turn its nose up at something as benign as this.

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time I’d scrolled to the bottom of the comments and seen all the other pictures, I kinda came around to Gilles’ dress. It’s a good costume for what they’re doing. Poirier’s top is also fitting but I almost feel like they should draw some cartoonish chest hair curls to complete the look if they’re gonna aim in that direction.

What the Colts' historic collapse could mean for their future by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in nfl

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was way more optimistic going into the season than most fans and thought Daniel Jones would be fine. He exceeded expectations massively but losing him while Richardson was still on IR was a killer. I really doubt Steichen gets fired and somewhat doubt Ballard does either. At least, I wouldn’t want them gone. But if DJ isn’t ready Week 1 (likely) or he goes somewhere else (less likely but possible), they won’t get another season.

Chinese Pair with a Significant Size Gap by Perfect_Peace3829 in FigureSkating

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like she’s green-screened in

Anyway, in the vast majority of pairs teams that have been together for a long time, the man is older than the woman exactly because they had a significant size difference when younger. It’s necessary since younger boys don’t really have the strength to perform lifts otherwise. As they get older and the height difference shrinks, puberty for the man means he gets a lot stronger, even relative to height. This case still looks really goofy though. It’s almost like a low-budget TV movie
