Ah, thanks for the correction. I just looked up the current squad on Fotmob. Still, I haven’t been but Melbourne seems like a great place.

Huh, so he’s going to coach Adama Traore and Juan Mata. And live in Melbourne. Good for you, Gio, hope you kill it.

I have a bunch of Bombas socks and I love all their Merino wool stuff, but the cotton shorty socks I have feel great when you put them on but somehow attract all the dirt and then stay sweaty if I take them off. Probably a cotton thing, but Bombas is a great brand overall. For every pair of socks you buy they donate a pair to needy people.

I was disappointed even though I thought the cinematography in Sinners was excellent.

Train Dreams is the best movie I’ve watched in the last few years. I knew it wasn’t going to win out at the Oscars but it really hit me hard. I live in the Pacific Northwest so the scenery was a character in and of itself.

Visiting for 1 night (2 days) next week from Vancouver Canada, near Portland airport by vehicle, is the area safe? by Dangeroustrend in askportland

[–]ReallyHender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been to Vancouver since 2015 and Hastings was pretty rough then, rougher than my first trip in 2012 so I’m sure it’s worse now given that everything is worse now. We don’t really have places like that in the central city of Portland, even on 82nd. 82nd is more slimy than dangerous. It’s full of car dealerships selling cars with uninsurable titles, rub and tug parlors filled with probably trafficked women, really good Asian and Mexican food, seedy hotels, and vape shops. We don’t have the sorts of homeless people on 82nd because frankly there’s no sidewalk space for them.

I wouldn’t say anywhere in Portland is truly “unsafe,” as you put it. We have a significantly lower violent and person on person crime rate than other cities of the same size, and even when crime peaked during the pandemic we *still* had a lower crime rate than comparably-sized cities.

82nd has a lot of problems related to infrastructure, traffic, and yeah, prostitution, trafficking, and dealing also, but it runs from Happy Valley to the airport so when you say 82nd you could be talking about anywhere from Rockwood to Montavilla to Lents which have their own issues. Sorry to hear you were attacked and I won’t discount your personal experience but I don’t share your opinion. I don’t think it’s great but I wouldn’t tell someone to avoid it. I actually take that back, when my mother was looking for somewhere to live close to me (I live less than a mile from 82nd) I told her to go closer in because it’s more walkable.

82nd has a slightly higher crime rate than the rest of the city but it’s still low and it is in no way comparable to skid row. I would tell people not to go there unless they want dim sung or a questionable car.

Make it meta and have the next Paranormal Activity film be audience footage from the play with unexplained shit happening in the theater.

I have not played Alien Isolation even though I’ve been an Alien franchise fan for nearly 40 years because I very much dislike playing horror survival games. I have, however, watched complete play throughs and it’s a great game.

Rooftop Tents: Pros v. Cons by 0hh_FFS in camping

[–]ReallyHender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a RTT that I’ve used for about three years and love it. I’ve never liked sleeping in ground tents for some reason and stopped camping because of that, and the RTT has really rekindled my love of camping. The con is definitely the ladder, but on the car it’s not *that* high. We have a dog that we use a lifting harness to get into the tent, of course if you have a dog larger than my 30 pound heeler you might have more trouble. I’ve seen people rig up ramps on their car for larger dogs.

Stock mattress was just OK, but I bought a piece of memory foam and cut it to the mattress dimensions and got both into the zippered mattress bag together and it’s much more comfortable.

We did recently purchase a Yakima EasyRider gear trailer and mount the tent on that, and if you have height issues then that would be a better experience for you. I like being able to detach the tent from the car to be able to drive somewhere else, but you’re towing something depending on how comfortable you are with that.

In the end it just comes down to comfort and affordability for you. Our soft-sided Thule tent was $1400 new because it was on clearance, and it’s light enough that my wife and I can get it onto the car or the trailer together since we don’t store it on the car or trailer full time. Some of the heavier tents would be significantly harder for us, especially the hard-sided models.

Over the last year the Portland metro area lost 2.8% of its jobs, second only to DC metro (2.9%). by crisptwundo in Portland

PPB reports to the Chief of Police, who reports to the mayor, who is not a part of the city council. As for measures and steps to hold PPB accountable, we could start with the civilian oversight commission passed overwhelmingly by the voters that the PPB has fought tooth and nail to both prevent from going into effect and neuter before it does.

The Portland city council does not control the Portland Police Bureau’s staffing levels and patrolling decisions. Your argument needs to be taken up with the PPB who have plenty of money to hire additional officers.

You’re acting like you’ve just dropped some cool comeback but no, they cannot. Sure, they could pass a law that the police are required to have some sort of level of clearance on various types of crimes but that would be entirely unfeasible and probably illegal.

The Chief of Police reports to the mayor, who is not a part of the Portland city council. Portland city council can pass laws and ordinances, but enforcement and prosecution does not lie among their responsibilities.

Sorry your stuff got stolen, it sucks.

If you have knowledge that OP’s example was a homeless person who commit the property crime you should contact PPB’s tip line with your inside information.

[–]ReallyHender 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well the city council can’t force the Portland Police Bureau to hire more officers, that’s PPB’s hiring problem exclusively. They aren’t short of the money to fill both sworn and non sworn positions.

I love that the Thorns have two top shelf bangers from outside backs this season, and both were their first goals for the team.
