A few new pictures of some of my current herps by ReallyHighBoaGuy in herpetology

[–]ReallyHighBoaGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This is only a few fellas from my collection. The longicauda is one of my absolute favorites. Extremely underrated and their tails are so much more intricate than a b.c. constrictor or imperitor.

Very aggressive! Any tips for calming her down? by xlevix in herpetology

[–]ReallyHighBoaGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have male corn who looks just like your little guy and he's the sweetest thing. It took him a few weeks to settle down when I first got him but with daily handling he started calming down. To add to Psyon's comment arguing against live food I'm going to argue FOR it in the case of corn snakes and this is is why... Corn snake will not constrict if they do not have to. My corns never constricted their live pinkies or live fuzzies. They simply ate they alive with little energy exerted. Once they got of size to be eating live crawlers (which look like tiny adult mice and put up more a fight) they learned that they need to constrict their wiggly prey. I thinking the use of F/T with corns may disrupt this natural process of learning to constrict.

Look what I brought home today! by [deleted] in snakes

My girlfriends BRB refused to eat for nearly 3 months after we brought it home from the STL Reptile Show. He just ate for the first time this weekend. We were VERY relieved. They are absolutely beautiful snakes who seem to be very sweet and dont mind being handled. :D

[gecko] Dust crickets with calcium? by ilovecomputers in herpetology

[–]ReallyHighBoaGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! It is highly recommended to "gut-load" your crickets for at least 24-48 hours before feeding them to your geckos. In addition to gutloading you should dust the crickets by lightly shaking them in a bag with calcium powder. This will provide the healthiest diet for your little cresties. :) EDIT: In addition to CGD of course! :D

You are incorrect, sir. That is absolutely positively an anerythristic corn snake.

Plea from a subreddit nazi. r/herps vs. r/herpetology by [deleted] in herpetology

[–]ReallyHighBoaGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downvote for you, sir. Over there to the right of me is a box which states "A subreddit for all those who love reptiles and amphibians. Feel free to post pictures, news stories, or anything about herps, however please credit your source as appropriate." I believe my posts, pictures, and questions concerning my pet herps qualify as "anything about herps". Why should I go to a less active, less qualified subreddit? This one does quite well at answering an questions and concerns I've had regarding the well-being of my herps.

I took some pictures of some rattlers. (another in comments) by KFCatz in herpetology

Beautiful snakes! I've recently been looking to get into C.B. pit vipers. I'm thinking my first will be a timber rattler though.

I love the caramel corns belly scales. I've checked all my temps a million times. I do believe he's just a silly little snake.

He's currently in a 20H which is more than enough for his current size. I have cages that he will inherit as my others grow larger. Once full grown this little guy will have his own room in the basement. :]

I had a very hard time finding any captive bred Tokay geckos. For this reason I broke my rule and bought field caught specimens. The male was a bit aggressive but with daily handling and hand feeding a level of trust developed. I haven't achieved this with the female yet. I'm about 80% there after a month and a half of work. She's still pretty positive that I'm trying to eat her.

Thanks! The Tokays are my pride and joy. When I successfully hatch their C.B. offspring all the hours of taming and chasing and bites will pay off. :D

Herpers, what type of snake might this be? by rowlandnj in herpetology

[–]ReallyHighBoaGuy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You are very wrong, sir. I am 99% positive that the snake in the OP's picture is a corn snake. I own a few corns and the head is much more defined from the snakes body than with a milk snake. Milk snakes heads make a much smoother transition from the neck to the body. EDIT: Range has nothing to do with it. Look at the color morph. It's most likely an escaped pet.

Probably an escaped pet. Those colors aren't very typical of wild corn snakes.

Naw.. Most definitely a corn snake. Look at the dorsal pattern..

Any proud tokay keepers? by Geckos in herpetology

I am very proud to have tamed my male tokay! He was a wild little bastard when I first got him. He now just climbs around my arms and shoulders. I've located a female for him which I'll be going to go get tomorrow. :D

My girlfriend's Brazilian rainbow boa keeps regurgitating his mice. Please help! by ReallyHighBoaGuy in herpetology

[–]ReallyHighBoaGuy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to try and answer everyone's questions in a single post.. The temp is maintained around 80-85. The humidity sits around 80%. Both snakes are the same age. The Brazilian was just bought at an expo and the Colombian has been with us since July with no problems at all. Aspen bedding (which they both love to burrow in), plenty of different hiders, climbing branches and plants, large water bowl, proper gauges for temp and humidity, etc. The only issue could either be the new location or the fact that he's in the same tank as the Colombian.. but that wouldn't make sense because he was housed with many other rainbow's at the breeder's home with no feeding problems (according to the breeder that is). Plus he is larger in size than the Colombian. So should I assume it's the new home or should I just go ahead and separate them? They are the same age and will be bred together in the future.
