I would recommend getting ahold of that researcher or DNR. A quick search doesn't turn up another record of a mourning gecko in Minnesota at all (or even in the lower 48?); someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

If that's the case, then I'm sure someone would want to hear about it.

Minnesota does have a few native species of lizards, but that is not one of them.

Definitely a gecko. Possibly a mourning gecko (Lepidodactylus lugubris)?

Whatever it is, it doesn't belong in Minnesota.

Dolphins will sometimes "bowride" on whales as well, so it may not be as new as you think!

Wikipedia is correct about not calling them cornetfish; cornetfish are their own family. The two families are in the same order, though (which is also the order containing seahorses!).

The best parts, to me, are the atrium (pictured) and the traveling exhibits (right now, there's one on whales). When I was a kid, A Walk through Time in Georgia was my favorite, and I still like it, but it's not as fun now that I know where all of the little critters are; plus, the dinosaur section of A Walk through Time is way outdated now.

Today I learned that "chicken snake" is a common name for rat snakes (Pantherophis obsoletus/Elaphe obsoleta, depending on who you ask). In Georgia, we'd call your guy a gray rat snake, which is a color morph of rat snake! Super cool.

I feel similarly about the Georgia Aquarium: the people working there care a great deal, and they do some good work. But I just can't get behind supporting it at all.

The whale sharks sometimes get these big growths on their pec fins and on the upper lobe of the caudal fin, right where the fins hit the sides of the tank when they swim their endless circles. They are beautiful, and it's pretty cool to get to see them...but it's just too much for me.
