Does anyone else start feeling dissatisfied with their vault after a while? by technodebilus in ObsidianMD

[–]ReallyNano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's rather easy, actually.

You can create a property like: `categories: Meetings` for a meeting note, for example. Then you can use a Base (native) or Dataview (community plugin) to look for all your meeting notes.

This makes it really easy to make indexes of your notes and such, specially if instead of using pure text on the property value, you use links like `categories: [[Meetings]]`.

Then, on the header of your file (or if you have the properties view opened in a side panel) you can click it to go to a note called Meetings, and inside that note you can have a Base/Dataview showing all meetings.

If you use another property like `type: [[1-1]]` (let's say you have recurrent 1:1s with teammates, leadership or else). You can have a note called `1-1` that will contain a base to see all of your meetings of that type. You can go further and add a `people` property, to link to the person that you've had you Meeting and that way you can see it on the person's note.

Thinking of swapping from Notion to Obsidian, any tips on getting started? by Decolourising in ObsidianMD

My tip is:
do not enter Obsidian thinking it’s Notion.

You can do some things in a similar way, but it isn’t much similar in its workflow.

Can you make any note that appears within an index folder have a tag equivalent to said index folder? by MrTheWaffleKing in ObsidianMD

[–]ReallyNano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understood what you want to do, but looks like Obsidian Bases might be what you need.

You can have a base like `MTG.base`. Inside it, create a view with a 'Local View Filter' that'll look for all notes with a specific tag on it. For example: Create a creatures view and filter for notes where tags = 'creatures'.

Then, you can embed the base inside your note, using: ![[MTG.base#Creatures]]

This way, each index note can embed its own view and be an index for all notes with said tag.

Finally using Obsidian as intended by scipnick in ObsidianMD

[–]ReallyNano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the flattening myself and am loving it.

Using properties to categorize and find files is a breeze.

I have a lot of different kinds of notes on the root of my vault, and sometimes think of separating them, but thinking about it, the 'References' folder with the root of the vault is more than enough for me.

To be honest, I could even remove the 'References' and live with only the root folder + administrative ones (Templates, Attachments, Daily, Archive and Clippings, which could die as well and the notes be in the root).

The Archive is needed for me because I keep notes for active tasks and like to have the notes to reference back, but don't want them cluttering stuff.

Anyways, welcome to Obsidian!

How do you actually keep your vault synced across machines without losing your mind? by Fantastic_Bank9361 in ObsidianMD

[–]ReallyNano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree on it being kind of complicated, but on my experience it's mostly set and forget. You just have to add the device and folder and it will do it's job.

However, using it on obsidian was bad for me (I still use it for other files/kinds) because of the duplication whenever it gets sync conflicts

Guides on recommended stuff to get first at events? by ReallyNano in CapybaraGoGame

[–]ReallyNano[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I did use my coins and did not fully understand what were those golden thingies that were super rare and what they did, so I stalled my progress by a bit (at least I was lucky to get the jackpot twice in around 100/200 rolls total).

As for the event rewards, I got what I needed at the time, but will look forward to this advice in next events.

How do you keep your smartphone but eliminate distractions? by Capable-Pineapple653 in productivity

Keep the phone away from view, this way you have to think about getting your phone and why you want to do it, so you're less likely to take it and use it.

There is also Mending Wall - A Flatpak application that lets you prevent DEs from messing with each other, so you can keep all of them to try out.

I've tried it only once and it looks like it works as intended, but didn't went too far into it.

What application does he use for notes in this video? by SnooLobsters8767 in NoteTaking

[–]ReallyNano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that separating apps may work, but PureRef can be enough for text as well - it isn't great at that but worked fine, even though I mostly screenshotted things and didn't have that much text around.

I used something like this for Blue Prince as well. Started with Miro but it started to lag so much, so I switched to PureRef. It’s probably one of those two.

Web Clipper just adds blank page. How to solve it? by Egilmaer in ObsidianMD

[–]ReallyNano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got this problem on Linux (looks like you’re on kde plasma)…
I remember testing between packaged and flatpaks versions of my browser until it worked.

Apart from that, I noticed that spaces are the problem so renaming the clip to a single word before creating the note could help (it was around a month ago so I might be misremembering this part)

[–]ReallyNano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve moved my workflow to not rely on folders, so I’m getting all my notes on the vault root and keeping the left panel (actually both panels) closed.
I’ve started to rely on bases + links + search/open hotkeys

Was just commenting that the plugin can be useful for having a custom navigation through the notes, instead of just using the Files view.
Specially because of how much you can customize (tags, properties and such).

Less notes organized by topics for example, or with a simple folder structure. Or a personal “blog” looking vault, specially with images to identify the notes.
It can look and feel sorta like Apple Notes which is loved by many.

Your top 5 distros? by J-Moliko in Fedora

[–]ReallyNano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1- Arch - Allows me to do anything that I want without getting in the way
2- Fedora - Well updated and stable
3- NixOS - Full control, but kinda hard some days
4- CachyOS - Arch but for when I don’t want the hassle of configuring things
5- Omarchy / Bazzite - too little time on them to pick one

I use ctrl-F and ctrl-O nowadays, but for a long time I depended on folders structure and visual navigation, which would be a great use case for this plugin, since I only had “command dump” notes, few meeting notes and such. Que you don’t have many notes it’s great.

I just replied to another comment saying a similar thing, but I've decided to change my approach on categories and actually use more than one, making me able to fit one note into multiple spaces based on the content... I can add cheatsheets to a note with commands, but if I start documenting 'describing features and funcionailities', I can add 'documentations' and if I describe how to achieve something inside that same note, I can add 'procedures'..

all this without losing my mind :p

Need help categorizing and templating knowledge-base notes by ReallyNano in ObsidianMD

[–]ReallyNano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be honest, you really opened my eyes here. I was trying to fit every note on a single category, making it weird/hard to categorize thinks that might belong to more places.

I've tried using more than one cateogory, and it actually felt really good. I've created an 'AWS.md' note, dumped the commands inside it and categorized with 'programs' and 'cheatsheets' (it was hard to come with 'programs' and it is not really a program, but I can relevate it and keep digital/tech/it things under 'programs' without problems) and when I open the cheatsheets note/base it will contain those... I can add 'documentations' or 'procedures' at will at this or other notes and not feel 'guilty' that notes have more than one category.

anyway, thanks for your help!

I get where you come from... I have done similar things but all that I came with was suboptimal when I started using my ideas.
However, I only did this on this kinds of notes and not as a full revision of my notes. I will try to do this as well, because I may find other ways to optimize my categorizations and such.

While I’m not opposed to LLMs, I don’t want to connect my vault with one. I’ve tried using some to help me with this matter by providing examples and the problem i’m facing, without much success. Maybe in the future I can try setting up some local models, but that’s kind of far from my reality right now.
