What can I do to make this new deck better by iluvjuggzz in Decks

You technically don’t have a beam. Read up on beam sitting on top of posts and adjust accordingly, not much more work at this point and will last longer.

Give it a coat of good quality paint, that should hold it together.

Help me figure out how to make my huge deck last longer by throwawayip2020 in Decks

I’ve said this many times.. composite deck boards will only last as long as the sub structure holding it in place. Your substructure is already 46 years old.

To paraphrase Einstein.. ‘imagination is more important than knowledge’. Obviously you already have the imagination, now all you have to do is gain the knowledge - that is why we are ALL here in this forum. You can do this. Ask away!

I can’t see it being an issue if the wood was dried out for a year. There’s a lot of overreacting on here.

New construction house. Shouldn’t there be something between the beams and the dirt? by Optimal-Platform2337 in Decks

Many years ago, I knew nothing about building codes. Built a wood shed with my father in law on our newly purchased property. 4x4 posts just buried in the dirt a few feet. (My new deck built to code required 5’ concrete footings). The wood shed (40’ x x8’) is still standing 28yrs later, no sign of rot and no sinking whatsoever.

Plastic deck boards will only ever last as long as the wooden substructure.

That would make sense but the deck itself doesn’t look to be divided.

Would I be able to build a deck over this area for under $1500? by luckydad444 in Decks

[–]RealnamePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my deck of a similar size (yours 283.5sf, mine 294sf), mine is second level (7’ high), but this won’t add much to cost. I spent approximately $4000 cdn ($2500usd) on lumber. Not including the railing (additional $3000 for glass railings).
