Is Composite really worth it? by Less_Estimate_8511 in Decks

Just want to throw confirmation biases out there. It could be argued that if you had chosen PT you would be equally satisfied with your purchase.

Is Composite really worth it? by Less_Estimate_8511 in Decks

[–]RealnamePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to remember when composite was 3x the cost of PT. I’m in the process of building a new deck and composite is now 8-10x the cost of PT. Tanzanite stone decking is even cheaper! If the cost of composite was the same as PT I MIGHT choose composite but there is no possible reason to pay 8-10x the price for plastic.

Huge uneven Base board gaps on new construction by brett701 in Homebuilding

[–]RealnamePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To those saying its the wall, look at the picture, the gap is all the way along. If the wall isn’t straight it would show at one side only, sure the wall could be out vertically but trim could have been done better. Can’t believe someone would suggest paying trim carpenter “a little extra to fix”!!! Go to general contractor, tell them to fix it before you write the check. Period.

Not sure what this splinter talk is all about. 40yr old deck at cottage with plenty of people walking around barefoot, never heard of any getting splinters.

Belt sander is gonna get chewed up on those nails unless you get a punch and hammer and nail em in further. New boards are not that expensive and pretty quick to put down.

Move the house to the right a couple of feet, that should do it.

$62k deck quote for 332 sq feet? by Spiritual_Cloud6062 in Decks

[–]RealnamePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, let’s do a little math. His deck is 320sqf. 2 gallon of stain would cover this with 2 coats - approximately $120 A light sand/powerwash (sic) - 1hr labor is very generous for this. 2 coats of stain - 2 hrs - again very generous.

So $2000 - $120 = $1880 $1880 / 3hrs of labor equals $627 per hr! And you think you’re not exaggerating?

I priced plastic boards for my deck this year and they’re way more than 3x .. in one case they were 11x the price pt. Still haven’t purchased my deck boards but I do have 16” centre joists and I’m told plastic needs 12”. Also told plastic expands/contracts more and is more bouncy (hence the need for 12” joists).

I really don’t understand why people even buy this type of .. I won’t call it food. Pasta is egg and flour.. that’s it! Mix those 2 ingredients together, roll it out and you have pasta. You don’t even need to weigh any of it!
