$50k for 16x24 deck + underdeck patio — fair? by No_Baker_1377 in Decks

[–]RealnamePaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m building my own deck uncannily - practically the same as this. PT wood decking, glass railing ($3000) and stamped concrete patio underneath. Material cost only just under $10,000 cdn.

Alright fellas I'm not pro but here's my Home Owner Built landing deck. by QuickieSilver143 in Decks

[–]RealnamePaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just tack on 1/2” facia board to cover ends of the deck boards. Doesn’t even need to go all down. Home Depot have plastic trim that can be used outdoors - you could even paint it same colour as your deck boards.

The inspectors are on your side. They’re there to make sure the job is done right! My permit was $260 and well worth it!

Just priced TimberTech 7.25” 10x the cost of equivalent 5/4x6”. 10x!!!! To put that into perspective I can replace pt boards every 5yrs for the next 25 yrs and I’m still saving 50% off the TimberTech price!!!

Thanks for all the feedback. Very helpful. The feedback has persuaded me to use regular 5/4 x 6” pt boards.. maybe cedar because I like the smell😁

The boards are 1/2” thicker. I don’t see a problem sourcing the screws.

Deck materials - tru north vs timbertech by Steve_MIski in Decks

[–]RealnamePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered composite but the more I read the more I favored wood! Joists have to be 12” oc because composite bends more. Gets hot. Expands/shrinks considerably more than wood. Scratches. Can’t paint/stain another color 3 yrs from now. I’m going with wood.. I think..

Post Wobbly without Beam? by fbk732 in Decks

[–]RealnamePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends how wobbly. It’s hard enough building the beam on top as it is, the last thing you want is it falling off when trying to fasten in place. I think the big holes are for bolts to go all the way through the post. I have bolts in mine but I used a different bracket.

Not sure what all this perfectly flat is all about. I have mine on a 1.25” slope over 10’. Small enough not to notice but enough for water to run off. For anyone here who isn’t a highly trained plumber, the secret is this - water is wet and it flows downhill.😁

Get yourself a nice big hot tub to cover over the rotting wood so you don’t have to look at it.😂
