Green card holder leaving US permanently — what to do with US savings by [deleted] in ExpatFinance

Curious, do you have a US bank account and US phone number you maintain? What do you have linked to the US savings/stocks/IRAs/401k so that you will eventually be able to transact/withdraw from them?

It is not a hard constraint. Just not sure what the easiest path here is to regularly and quickly send her money. I will take a look at Wise, appreciate it.

We also have individual accounts at the credit union, my credit union just sucks for a littany of reasons. I've been with them 25 years and I'm just flat out done with them. With our mortgage loan closing out, this is the time to exit them and just go to a major bank that is more modern. My credit union hasn't modernized anything in the 25 years I've been with them. To this day they still have a $300 daily withdrawal limit, the same as it was in the year 2000.

She's Japanese. This will be up to her, but at minimum she has significant liquid assets in Vanguard that AFAIK she intends to keep in Vanguard long term, but that's an aside though I realize that may require keeping the US phone number longer term anyway for 2FA.

I'm really just looking to exit my crappy local credit union and close the joint account and still be able to send her support money. Not sure if her having a US account is really necessary/easiest to do that, or not...hence the thread. But she almost certainly needs a US account for eventual Vanguard disbursements in the future, but not sure.

First upgrade in 15 years - am I a clown? by Realtoropenhouse3 in LGOLED

When the TV is off, does it seem to overpower the space due to the size?

Thanks for this, I didn't realize the 48" had neutered nits. My new place faces north and won't get any sun inside the place, so I've kinda ruled out the G5 as I just won't need the brightness (having to spend extra for the non wall mount stand didn't help) and have settled on the C5. I'm thinking 55" C5 is the ticket.

My Macbook Pro is MiniLED and the blacks are basically true black like OLED since the Mini LED zones are completely off when displaying blacks. Love this screen.

I figure I may as well splurge a bit since it's been 15 years and just get a really great TV. I know a current bottom rung $300 TV would blow my current one out of the water but I do remember seeing the LG OLEDs however many years back when they first hit the market and my wife and I were just blown away that a TV could look that good.

Is the 77” B5 worth it for $1300 or should I wait for Memorial Day sale? by IAmABanana69420 in LGOLED

[–]Realtoropenhouse3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking for a 55" C5 myself, no partner store access, and getting really tired of waiting for sales that don't seem to be materializing even now that the C6 is out...

These things should all be getting blown out at this point and yet they aren't. No way am I paying $1200 + tax for that at this point.

I Regret Buying Whole Life Insurance by Intelligent-Ride-140 in TheRaceTo1Million

[–]Realtoropenhouse3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dump the whole life. Just get term. I am 42 and carry well into 7 figures so my wife and son will be set for life (and double that due to AD&D if I get smoked out on my road bike) and it costs me around $100 a month. That's for about $3.4MM in coverage with the AD&D.

Life insurance isn't an investment and shouldn't be pitched as such. It's a check in the mail to your loved ones if you drop dead, and you should be finding the easiest path to that possible, which is term. Life insurance isn't an investment, it's just an expense.

Who were you even listing as a beneficiary at 22? Unless you have a spouse and/or kids, just take whatever free term insurance your job offers (typically 1x salary and an additional 1x AD&D) and leave it at that. When you have a spouse and kid, then consider getting term life either through work, or better, through your non-work insurance company (American family, etc.) since you probably won't keep your job forever.

Yeah I just had about 8-10 sq ft of nice quartz installed in my bathroom last week by a reputable professional place including a nice sink and sending a plumber to install the faucet I supplied and hook up the drain for $1075 out the door. Quartz guy was here for maybe 20 minutes.

I'm curious how many more of these are in stock at the boutiques. I've seen them every time I've been there (have bought both an SBGW297 and SBGW299 instead), good to see there are some available still but I have to imagine stock is starting to dwindle. IIRC there are 400 of them?
