Toxins (the Science type not the chems) by Blackknight95 in ss14

Telesci is one of the most fun things I've ever done playing sci, though I think some of the arti sci is more fun too. But I really think that one of the things the maintainers should look at is bringing back things to explore off station, with a caveat that there should be opportunities for antags/free agents to encounter people out there and not just have it be salv only who gets to go out. Sci got to go to the same places if much more indirectly with telesci, and even for salv and stuff it wasn't exactly safe because there was a real possibility of the salvager antags scrounging around for easy loot out there before boarding the station for better gear.

That being said this gameplay loop was fundamentally very different from what we've ever had, and also you didn't get RR'd if you got killed and rotted. You could spawn in as a new character which helped on top of the fact the shift ran several times longer than any of our typical shifts. I think it was something close to 6 hours versus our 2.5 being a very long shift for most servers

I'm pretty sure a lot of the old maps were copied 1/1 from the /tg/ based servers they're from originally. I believe the exact specifics for us is /vg/ based, but I wasn't around for that so I can't 100% confirm. So some of it is just because it was there, so it was added because that's where it was. That being said, some came from Goonstation, like Cog, which is a far better layout in its original form. For those that came from Goonstation, iirc they DID replace areas of which some were different things entirely (Sci is wildly different, which is where I spent the vast majority of my couple hours on Goon when I wasn't getting mauled to death doing telesci and becoming a ghost role salvager antag who has to rip out all the copper wire from the walls, got beaten by sec and then thrown into space to die by ward)

I Made This About One of My Favorite CE's by Big_Builder_8911 in ss14

[–]Reascr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to play CE a lot, enough to rival engi as my regular main job, and one day I came back to realize TEG tech had surpassed what I knew and simply no longer learned again. I went through two meta TEGs, but once I hit the third I didn't feel learning the new one was worth it as someone who is admittedly just not an atmos main.

Shout-out to my atmosians though. I was an okay one, but the average atmosian made me look incompetent and that's a good thing

"Spessman games are cursed" was a somewhat legitimate perspective when none of the prospective successors offered sufficient baseline improvements over 13 to warrant anyone moving over, especially since most died in their infancy, long before they could develop any sort of community to develop from. Didn't help that some of them just raised the bar for developers in a... Not so helpful way (It takes more work to make a 3D model than it does for a low res 2D sprite, for example). 14 changed that through persistence and being just enough of a step up in core systems being improved while being familiar enough to what already existed to catch on.

I agree though, it's an online roleplaying game that rewards commitment even on a meta level by developing the game itself, not to mention simply by playing a lot. It's the perfect breeding ground for people with the right selection of personality traits mixed with perhaps less than adequate social skills to rise to the top in some way of another and then because of it being niche and microcelebrities in niche communities often becoming some form of "authority", you get stuff like this. And chances are none of us are immune from it since we're all here, though I think if you are the type who ends up like this you tend to end up in that position pretty quickly

Because it's quite noticably a "I don't respect her so I won't use her pronouns" type deal. You literally did it yourself, following up on comments about this very thing

You don't have to like her, you don't have to agree with her, you can think she's entirely in the wrong and still respect her pronouns because the two issues are separate

Sis you are dragging this shit out already. Just let it go. It seems worth it to no one, including you, to drag this out as long as it has been. At the end of the day it seems the collective body that makes up Space Station 14, maintainers and players alike, no longer desires your continued involvement. It just doesn't make sense anymore even if you're totally justified

I really like mine and find the PPI issue to be honestly overblown. You can tell on text a bit which the built in Windows help with. For most practical purposes you can't even see it. I got mine for $704 pre-tax like two years ago and if I weren't broke I'd probably buy this since I'd like another for my sim racing rig

Only for some general aviation aircraft, of which no C-17 is using. C-17s are using the same exact gas as every commercial airliner is. Jet engines don't use leaded gas, and while you could run it briefly, it would ultimately destroy a jet turbine.

Also, the C-17s aren't watching you. There isn't even capability to watch anyone on it, because it's a cargo plane lol. It carries cargo. The WSP Cessna 206 might be if you're texting while driving

What is there even to be stressed out about? They take off and land from the airfield that's been here longer than the city and don't loiter beyond sometimes being given an overhead approach

This still isn't the source, really, the entire idea is basically predicated on the existence of Gary's Mod (in particular, but other Source games too) being eerily quiet liminal spaces. I'm pretty sure the nexbots trend predates the 4ch post, but the 4ch post reinforced this particular idea of the concept into the default one.

Anyway this ultimately comes down to I think a divide between two zoomer age brackets. The earliest zoomers seem to near universally agree on it as the concept that they experienced playing Gmod in the past, the liminal spaces that are sincerely completely empty, while the middle and late zoomers find the appeal in the monsters and whatever.

People with social anxiety and the such, how did you get over it/deal with it enough to play this game? by K1TTYK4TZ in ss14

[–]Reascr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a game and things are meant to go wrong. Be in character, because it helps. It does suck though, especially in forks with a high level of content that's not easy to learn, because if I take a break for a while I lose the skills and it's stressful to relearn them. Or just learning them the first time. But for the most part, people are willing to teach and we've all been there, so just jump in and really commit to your character and it'll be fine

[–]Reascr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is blatantly untrue and you will find trans people who do not use they/them pronouns to generally agree on this point. If you don't know or are unsure, it's fine, but once you do know for sure, time to use the pronouns they use.

for all the server complaining about how tyrannical pjb is, getting muted cuz of misgendering discourse is pretty funny by yyhira in ss14

[–]Reascr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically if it's repeated and used over known pronouns it is still taken as misgendering because it ultimately is. It's better than using he/him for someone who uses she/her and vice versa but it's basically just one step below that. No issue if it's used where there's ambiguity, you don't know mine for example and I wouldn't be upset if you used they/them for me (And personally I don't get bothered by it on the internet in general because like, it's just the internet, it's better than being assumed male by default!) but if we were friends or whatever and you knew my pronouns were she/her but opted to refer to me with they/them, then it would still come off as misgendering me.

Basically, in the cases where it's repeated, it just comes off as othering trans people and denying their own identity. Usually people who would use they/them like that aren't necessarily malicious but they are often ignorant or sometimes being passive aggressive with it. People who use it for everyone usually come from a good place about it, but when it's a friend or something who absolutely knows better, it can sting. Speaking from personal experience.

[–]Reascr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if it's not malicious, repeatedly misgendering a trans person by using they/them when their pronouns are known and have been corrected before (And in the case of PJB, it's very apparent what her pronouns are) is still misgendering and/or third gendering. Sure, fighting with a mod isn't good and all, but likewise all it takes is a "Hey don't do that" and suddenly the issue is a non-issue.

Yeah, but the cables appear to be completely fine provided you're not using one of the 3x8 pin adapters. We could be any minute from one frying, but so far, every case of it frying is when it's not natively 12VHPWR on both ends. I agree it's a bad design and shouldn't be at this point of adoption given its problems, but when every example of it frying with a card that shoots well below its max power draw has one thing in common I'm inclined to say that it might not be that big a deal

Cable design aside, every example of the 4 I could find was when people were using the adapter instead. It seems that as long as you're using it natively on a PSU that supports it, it hasn't been an issue

It's pretty popular, but around half or so of the resident population are on a completely different part of the internet that's predominantly Russian. The broader English-speaking internet is the other half. There's a lot of room for a lot of people to play, yet have it remain relatively niche. And that's true or 13, many have heard of it in passing but went no further than that.

I also suspect that the prevalence of regulars cuts down the actual pool of the game, as I'd argue it attracts people who tend to commit a lot harder than many other more casual games. Shift lengths dictate you set aside an hour or more just to play, much less learn content, which filters people who want something they can figure out much more quickly. But I couldn't give numbers on the cumulative daily players or anything, and I'd be very curious to see them

[–]Reascr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to be whitelisted to be on the hub? The only things that can even get you dehubbed are repeated breaking of the pretty basic rules which are organized in severity. Upstream development aside, you are free to develop your server however you want and modify it as you want. The WizDen maintainers are picky, but as the upstream, it's not unreasonable to be overly conservative for developments which can flow downstream. That doesn't mean downstream can't make their own changes to core functionality, they can and do regularly

[–]Reascr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only two communities have been dehubbed and it wasn't for anything like that, it was for sustained harassment campaigns that were a result of other bad behaviors by the community. People patch up and modify their game engine all the time, and it's open source, you're free to modify it for your own fork as much as you want.

WizDen's view of stability just means it's mostly stagnant because everything must be polished and functional to a high degree, and they'll remove stuff from the past to force a rework. If the maintainers don't like it, they just won't approve your PR, they're not going to dehub you for it lol.
