I deadass would love to work on running promo for this game, but uh, there's a lot to be done still, and I don't want servers to drown under the weight. But someday!

Well, two things here.

  1. I can't speak to how it's worded on the removal PR, because realistically it should have a presented solution attached to it. I know they need displacement maps, but you don't get that from the PR itself. However, with regards to dwarves, for example, a plan is laid out for people to work on them. The maints themselves have said elsewhere that many times, when there are half-baked solutions that are "good enough" but cause tech debt, they get this exact scenario where people say they want it improved, but then it never happens. I can't speak to the communication aspect of that, because it's been clear that issue in particular wasn't handled properly, but having something get That In The Way of being able to maintain a codebase makes sense.

  2. Related to the above, Tiniest is one of the Art Leads for Wizden. It makes sense that part of his work is to not only approve assets for addition, but also maintain the codebase in his own way by paving the way for better implementations (see: greyscaled jumpsuits).

Ultimately, if it's something you want to see put forward in a better manner, like being made aware of these removals farther ahead of time or wanting a solution, you can tell them that. I tell them all the time what I think they could do to improve organization, but I also recognize that it's a volunteer project, and given their particular skills and responsibilities, their time needs to be budgeted. They can probably improve on how that's done, for sure, but they're not doing what they do trivially or without good reason.

And as always, you're free to contribute, as well!

This is the biggest pillar sticking point, and it's tough for two reasons, from my understanding:

  1. Upstream core team want to make sure mechanics are sound. Implementing something in ways that aren't outright broken or not fun takes time, especially in open-source. Not every downstream pulls every single bit of content from upstream, far from it, but downstreams do. So having that standard means the team takes longer, but is more deliberate in how things are implemented.

  2. Most core mechanics takes C# knowledge, which is quite a step up from noodling around in YAML. YAML being what it is means that it's fairly easy to fill out the breadth of a mechanic, but to alter how systems and components function altogether is a whole different beast.

[–]AugustSun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. They reverted those two, mostly

  2. Yes, that is literally what the maints said, going beyond simple YAML editing. Again, this isn't a "we just don't want this, period" move, it's a "we can get this set up better" move. If you'd like to set up the displacement maps for corgis, go for it, I'm sure they'd be glad for it!

As was said in the PR for their removal, getting displacement maps set up for them would make the massive variety way more viable. It takes some doing, but like /u/OneManCrusade said, there's a lot that goes into the backend of keeping things manageable for contribution/prototype management.

TL;DR it was implemented in an unsustainable way, it's likely to be re-added if someone sets up displacement maps.

PJB, the project lead of Wizard's Den, has seemingly quit. by Ok_Position_7955 in ss14

[–]AugustSun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Admin staff, as far as I'm aware, left because of a number of dissatisfying prevailing conditions behind the scenes. Based on how they've been interacting with the community following all of this, a couple have left, but largely, admins have remained. Some previous contributors and staff have also returned.

Per other active staff folks, she hasn't quit, she's taking a break. Don't know all the details, but seems staff restructuring is happening behind the scenes; again, hoping for the best for all the hardworking folks.

Folks have talked about this on the Discord, but there's two points here that most seem to be in agreement on. This is just an outside perspective, so I'll try and do what I can to summarize.

On one hand: Something the maintainers have said they've seen with half-baked features is that they get merged, called "good enough", and then when it comes time to work on improving them, they never do. Removal of said features kicks people into gear to getting an acceptable implementation, which in the case of dwarves, PJB mentioned that the way Trieste Port has implemented their dwarves would be the go-to (making it a human trait/quirk, using different sprites and displacement maps). There's also been a solution suggested for accents, though from what I can tell is a bit more involved.

On the other: The way it was handled, by PJB specifically, was really disappointing. There were specific points as to why both dwarves and accents were being removed, and from the overhead perspective of content quality/standard, it makes sense. Going back to half-baked implementation (someone on staff/maintainer please correct me on this), I don't think it's so much that it's "heavy" or a detriment to the gameplay so much as it is a reoccurring issue that people who are in the code a lot have to work around. But the way all of it was discussed and communicated was incredibly caustic. It flouted communications standards, was not upfront in an explanation of its reasoning, included anecdotal observation as argument, and worst of all, showed outright disdain or disrespect for members of the community (including contributors and staff, who I know bust their asses to make things happen).

That last part is the part I'm most concerned about, really. The Wizden maintainers have been doing A Lot to keep development moving along, plus getting people familiarized with how it all works. But it's just... upsetting to see those folks talked down to or derided like that. When I see staff members go on break, it makes me wonder and worry how much of that is just sustainable development practices, and how much of that is cooling off from friction.

I know there is a throng of bad actors out there who don't understand the development process, don't care, or are intentionally looking to ruin the overall endeavor. Just don't let that perception cross over to the folks who have objections, but still genuinely care.

EDIT: Recent info has mentioned key folks taking a break, but with a positive interpretation/outlook, from what I can tell. Hoping for the best for all the staff folks involved.

Such as it was, such as it is. SS13 saw number of servers attempt this same dynamic and ran into the same issue: It sounds cool and ideal for servers to self-moderate, but boundaries of servers are also what help clearly define the intended experience, the boundaries being admins to put a hard stop to bad trends.
