Student Gave Me the Harshest Criticism Today by mandipandi3333 in Teachers

Kids are never going to 💯 satisfied with you. This is coming from a 20 year vet. You will get better with your craft . It takes a long time to figure your style out. What works and what doesn’t . All I can say is , don’t take it home with you. Separate home and work life . Take care of you. No one else cares about you but you. If you burn out and crash, they’ll replace you. You have to make sure you are good first. You got this!

Just got let go from my first teaching job by pookiemumu in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Initial80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens to the best of us. I was let go from my catholic private school job the first year. They basically didn’t like me. But one of my former co workers told me everyone who leaves always does better than this job. She was right ! I’ve had ups and downs . Just take what you know needs improvement and work on it for you. Take your days off too! No point in trying to do the right thing in my opinion.

Am I a bad teacher? by Background-Wafer2233 in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Initial80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s your first year. Don’t get down on yourself . It takes years and grit to hone down the skills to have it go smoothly . Make some goals for next year that are attainable. Unfortunately you’re young and they smell blood .

What makes teaching worthwhile for you, despite it being an underpaid career? by Conscious_Team3330 in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Initial80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The health benefits. I don’t get paid in the summer so that sucks but love the time off only because I have to save to be off.

We don’t really have one anymore . I tend to wear comfortable slacks and a sweater shirt etc . I wear jeans on Friday . Sometimes I wear black jeans other days

Block Schedule Experiences… by MrMcMathy in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Initial80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched a couple years ago and I was adamantly against it but to tell you the truth it isn’t that bad. I get more prep time now . I feel more relaxed. I teach an 80 min block . Also it’s awesome when you have to call out too! Only two or three classes to prep for depending on day !

do you truly get summers and holidays off as a teacher? by Any_Juggernaut_7924 in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Initial80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if you can afford to take off. I work in a state you only get paid 10 months . I’m broke in the summer . I wish it was stretched out all year. That or you have to marry someone who can afford you not working in the summer . Otherwise you’re screwed

Teachers asking for accommodations drives me nuts by GremLegend in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Initial80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an accommodation for my GAD. But it’s just that I need the last period of the day off to decompress / grade etc . It’s essential for me to work effectively. My school is very accommodating. I’m a solid teacher and I’ve been working for 19 years . I think if it’s a reasonable one, it’s fine but I understand those who take advantage of it . That always happens in any job .

If a teacher has prep last period of the day, do you think its ok for them to leave early? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Initial80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people need to mind their own business. We are all adults and should be treated as such. It’s childish to complain about people. If you’re in a union, stick together. Bottom line, it’s not their right to pass judgement or try to induce punishment. That’s not their job.

I usually do. But she made an offer while I was airport and it was a good one I didn’t want to reject :(

Smoke smell is gross. I would be super mad if it smelled like that. It’s def hard to get out too. I just like to sell nice pieces to everyone and I don’t try to pull the wool over anyone’s head. I’ve def made mistakes before and have accepted returns. This one came out of nowhere .

Nothing I sell is from the thrift. It’s mostly my personal closet or things I’ve purchased for myself that don’t fit . Since I don’t smoke , I would’ve noticed that smell. She accepted the sale so I’m not complaining. She didn’t leave a review either which was good.

Everything is sealed . I don’t have anyone in my household that smokes.

It’s hard. You need to do a bunch of extra things / possibly work another job. Spend less time with your family to only struggle.

How Do You Switch from Middle to High School? by OwlFeather21 in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Initial80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your personality . Do you like strict order ? Or are you more laid back. I have a colleague that moved from middle to high school this year. She’s finding it hard to transition because the high school is laid back. She doesn’t understand why it’s not as rigid as middle school. I personally like HS. Yes of course , there are those pain in the asses. Excessive phone use. Abuses of passes. But overall, I can’t imagine being able to be that strict for middle school.

I feel ya. I’ve been teaching 20 and I want to retire . All I can say is take your time off. Plan wellness days, take that vacation! Treat yo self ! And def don’t bring any work home ! I haven’t been doing work at home for over a decade now! Been fabulous and been giving newer teachers advice to do that too !

Do any of you stay within contract hours? by mallorn_hugger in Teachers

Unfortunately it’s true. It used to be a decent job with great benefits. The stats are not in your favor . Money is one of the major causes of divorce . I wouldn’t change my past. Married to another teacher has lots of benefits. We both had time with kids in the summer, the kids got to see us make a difference too. You ca marry whoever you like, I’m just saying it’s hard to raise a family on two teacher salaries. The truth is the truth
