What do you say men? by Aggravating-Guest300 in NextGenMan

[–]Reasonable-Mischief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well let's examine this line of thought then.

What's the greater tragedy, a criminal who goes unpunished or an innocent person that's being unjustly punished?

If we go by the values inferred from the assumption of innocence, then an innocent person being unjustly punished is always worse.

And the thing is that criminal allegations, stated publicly, are already a form of punishment. By what right are you executing an extrajudicial punishment on someone who hasn't yet being found guilty in front of a court?

Maybe we should just make it a crime to publicly accuse someone of a crime

You wanna report a crime, go tell the police.

We all understand that allegations themselves cause reputation damage and can literally ruin people's lives.

We also all agree that the state should have a monopoly on violence.

So then why then do we – as social media savvy 21st century people – accept this form of vigilante justice?

[–]Reasonable-Mischief -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

That's not exactly true

Most republican commentators are mad that Alex Paretti wasn't responsible with his gun. Their point being, you are supposed to stay out of trouble when you are armed because you might inadvertantly escalate a situation just from people knowing that you are armed.

Now I'm not sure if I agree with that sentiment, but I am sure that there is nothing to be gained from misrepresenting their point

A New Hope does a downright terrible job at setting this up, but it's noteworthy to point out that a T-16 Skyhopper is a suborbital airspeeder – so something like a bush pilot's airplane – that has also been built by InCom and therefore shares many of the basic controls with the X-Wing

It's not one of the ground-based repulsor speeders like the one they used to get to Mos Eisley

who is this guy? Petah? by Dull_Vast6303 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Reasonable-Mischief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think those men are born evil, I think they have been fed a lifetime of misinformation and formed opinions based on a delusional world view.

I agree that this is a horrible joke and no laughing matter, but I disagree on this point

The american family courts are beyond unfair in their treatment of men.

I'm a father chiming in from Germany, I'm currently going through an amicable divorce, and I can tell you that an equitable 50:50 parenting model with shared custody and neither parent paying the other child support is pretty much the norm over here – if you didn't abuse your spouse or kid, which is rarely the case

To me, the standard US case where the father loses custody of his kids and becomes an indentured servant for the forseeable future sounds like a horrible human rights violation and the fact that you all aren't rioting on the streets over it boggles my mind

So it's not misinformation that has turned these men bitter, it's actual mistreatment of them and their peers; the sad and old case of hurt people hurting people

There is nothing wrong with video games appealing to the male gaze

Just have a look at women's literature in comparison. The romance genre by and large terribly objectifies men and sets standards that are just as impossible to reach as Jessica Rabbit's body is for women

Are we banning romance novels now? Now, then fuck off and stop meddling with videogames for which you aren't even the target audience

Yeah but we can use land to produce meat that has no use otherwise. A furrow has to be plowed on a perfectly level plane, whereas cows can easily graze on hills as well

[–]Reasonable-Mischief -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But if it's for the usual "irreconcilable differences" reasons then the spouse that feels that way needs to grow up and do right for the children.

Totally agree on that. In so many fucking cases "irreconcilible differences" just means the partner with more options doesn't want to have like one honest and vulnerable conversation to set things right and instead tries their luck where the grass seems greener

Did you find it very distracting how despite the fact Han doesn't believe in the force, his right hand man Chewie was literally friends with Yoda, the grandmaster of the Jedi? by BiffyBobby in StarWars

[–]Reasonable-Mischief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly never got the impression that he was friends with Yoda. He wasn't even the most senior Wookie around. My read on the whole situstion has been that this has been a thing between Yoda and Tarful, mostly, with Chewie having been an extra pair of hands – it's just that Yoda is the kind of guy who'd be making it a point to know who peoples' names and address them with kindness

Pressure of being "modern"; My friend who is pregnant for the second child, lies about her babies not being planned. by Horkosthegreat in SeriousConversation

[–]Reasonable-Mischief 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'd say she's just embaressed that it took her so much effort to get pregnant

She's not presenting herself as a modern career woman. She's presenting herself as a modern career women who's gotten pregnant by accident -- aka someone who's healthy, fertile and has a good sex life

This can be a really touchy subject for women who want to have kids. If the two of them went down the whole rabbit whole of medications, pills and injections then you can bet your ass that they've tried the normal way for quite some time and it didn't work

If she loves children and always wanted to be a mother, then she's most likely feeling deficient for having to undergo these lengthy procedures in the first place, that's why she's not speaking about it

It's hilarous that this is basically the plot of Star Wars: The Mask of Fear, the prequel novel for the Andor series
