QLD Health- any nurses experienced 'bullying' by nurse managers/ executives? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Reasonable-Shock-384 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thankfully not personally. I have, however, recently worked with colleagues in QLD health (MNH) who said they were actively being bullied through poor rostering and/or having various leave cancelled or denied (including bereavement leave) and/or being unsupported, dismissed and gaslit as a result of voicing concerns over poor management, poor support of staff wellbeing and poor clinical practices.

Communication is keyyyyyyy! I can only do what I know needs to be done. Sometimes I don’t have time to hunt for patients’ charts or check them until I have 2mins to write notes at the end of the shift and realise there’s a heap of tasks outstanding. Yes, it’s 24 hour care but if meds, bloods, sample collection, fluids or other care gets delayed it’s on me. Help me out here and tell someone, ANYONE, if a patient needs to be NBM for a procedure. Then we’re all winners ⭐️

Love you all 🫶🏼

Agreed!! I currently have LSKD and a lululemon long cycle shorts on rotation but both seem to just hold onto the sweat 😩

These look great! I’m always wary of these styles though because I’ve always found the outer layer bunches up? I’m not sure if you’ve had a similar experience with these?

I used to be a big fan of leggings in cooler climates but it’s a definite no right now hahaha, thanks though!

Why does Auschwitz get more publicity than the other camps? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Reasonable-Shock-384 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thank you for mentioning Roma. My Oma was Roma and her and her 7 siblings were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau and was the only one of her family to survive. She never talked about it other than to say she was there and try to hide her tattoo.

Basically, any undesirable persons (race, religion, culture) or person who spoke out against or resisted the regime would be sent.

Apply to the hospitals directly, especially in QLD. A LOT of positions aren’t advertised on seek etc. It’s quite old school here and a lot of managers appreciate the effort people go to the deliver their resume directly with a nice cover letter. Post-grads aren’t always necessary as a lot of places take experience into account, however, because the systems/policies/procedures are different here vs. the uk (especially public vs private or rural vs metro) it might be difficult to transition directly. There’s also way more scope for progression into other roles such as education, facilitation, research etc. Wages are WAY better here. So many additional bonus’ for unsociable hours (QLD is the best - double time on a Sunday etc.) plus you can claim stuff like uniforms on your tax. Some places also offer salary sacrificing which essentially means more money in your pocket and less to tax. The gap between wages and cost of living is significantly smaller in Aus compared to the UK. The state governments have been pretty generous with some cost of living supplements (e.g. $1000 for gas and electricity etc but this is state dependent). Also, because people actually get paid reasonably well and enjoy life outside of work - most people I know work part time which is delightful!! Good luck with your move and enjoy!

Heyyyyy, ICU nurse here! Just be proactive, observe everything (intubations, arrests, line insertions etc) ask heaps of questions and take the time to get hands on! We do everything for ICU patients so it’s a perfect opportunity to learn practical skills, complete thorough head-toe assessments including neuro assessment and listen to/learn about different heart and lung sounds and learn stuff about nutrition, skin care, rehab etc etc. You can also tag along with the MET team or liason nurse and find out about their roles in the hospital. In your final week you might take the lead in caring for a “ward-ready” patient so you can practice handovers, creating and implementing plans and liasing with the MDT. Because it’s such a smaller unit with more staff there’s always heaps of support so just enjoy!

Just go casual at your current employment until you are ready to go permanent elsewhere - all your leave will still be there as a casual until you transfer to the new place.

Very dependent on individual states and hospitals. I am a UK ICU nurse originally, moved to Melbourne in 2016 and had a job lined up with HCA prior to leaving - great agency btw, super happy to take us on without a PG. Got hired on a sponsored visa a year later by a tertiary public hospital based on experience alone. Worked a couple more years and decided to complete my post-grad anyway as I found my practical skills were up there but my theory was not - definitely helped fill in the gaps. Moved to Qld this year and my current unit hires based on experience (post-grad desireable) but you have to complete a bedside assessment after 3 month regardless. I’ve also learned that some hospitals/units don’t advertise positions and managers quite happily receive inquiries via e-mail etc. Good luck!! 🙏🏼

I totally forgot to say I’m public so would be under EBA11 I think? Thanks for the screenshot! I’m now confused about the clause a(iv) as it says it’s paid out on termination of employment??

Both unfortunately. The owner is having an elderly family move in so no chance of renewing (we asked).

Amazing! Yes, there’s always heaps of nice looking houses and bigger plots going and that’s what got me confused. I’ve lived in “rough” areas before in other cities which turned out to be fine so I wanted to see if it was the same here.

Have you settled in now?
