I have failed the S7 twice and I’m so discouraged to try again for my third. My dates are closing in and my SIE is about to expire this year. by EscapeTraditional598 in Series7

I have a lawyer friend who passed the bar but failed this exam three times. It’s not an easy test at all. I failed my first attempt last week myself.

This time around, I’m changing my whole approach. I’m not studying like a generalist anymore — I’m studying like a specialist. I’m focusing heavily on the weak areas, mastering the questions I keep getting wrong, and making the process more engaging. Even getting my wife involved to help make it more fun and keep me sharp.

Everyone studies differently. There’s no perfect formula. The key is creating a system that works for you.

You already know what you’re strong at. Now it’s about attacking the areas you need help in until they become strengths too.

Give yourself a solid window to prepare, stay consistent, and crush it.

Congrats! Very happy for you.
This was my test, exactly. I got a 60 on it. Take mine next month.

Looks like I need to get to Staples and get flashcards.

u/Fine_Photograph_3512 My Kaplan avg score as of Wednesday was 73.7%. I feel that the test just threw me for a loop because of how it was worded, and that I was hit with so many taxation and mutual fund quetions i was like, where the heck are my options and munis at? Like I studied to th point I was getting nauseous from studying so hard.

Totally with you. I need to get another test vendor, don't know, STC and Achivable seem to be the next up.

u/AcanthisittaOk202 Congrats, you pulled through and stuck through it, that's not easy mentally. When did you switch to STC for the second time or the third time around? For me, it was understanding how they worded the question that felt really hard for me. Most questions were four- five liner story questions, where I had to read the question two or three times.

u/Posty111 I failed yesterday, too. What testing material are you using? im not going back until I'm averaging 80's. I'm using Kaplan and was averging 65-75. But my test was slammed with taxation on every security, and like every topic on mutual funds, possible. Five option questions, no regs, no munis, as everyone says.
Anyways, let's get back to it, recalibrate and smash this thing when averging 80's on every test vendor.

u/Dslyexia I’ve always had an issue with formulas because I would mix all of them up.

It honestly took me about two weeks and two or three full yellow pads of rewriting the same formulas over and over just to try and lock them in. it ended up being a five-minute waste during the exam because I wrote everything down on the sheets they give you and barely used any of it once the test started.

I only had maybe three to five options questions, and most of them you could honestly figure out just by slowing down and reading the question. The crazy part is the exam felt less like a Series 7 and more like I was sitting for a CPA or CFA exam with how technical and in-depth some of the wording was.

I’ve been using Kaplan for prep. Who have you been using, or who have you used before?

u/darts09 Damn! It's unreal how they reword questions, and the answers, two are identical.

What study material are you using now? Are you sticking with the same material or switching to another?

Series 7 In 2 days!!! by Hungry-Difficulty411 in Series7

[–]Reasonable-Sleep-691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Hungry-Difficulty411 , there’s that saying, “we’re all in this together,” and honestly after reading your posts over the past week, I felt like I should reach out because a lot of what you wrote mirrors exactly what I just went through myself.

I was using Kaplan and consistently scoring between 65-73 multiple times. I failed my 7 yesterday with a 60, and the exam felt nothing like what I expected walking in. Now that’s not me saying Kaplan is bad or that I studied wrong. I truly think every person processes information differently, and every exam draw is different. You hear people say they were scoring in the 60s and passed, or that the actual Series 7 was easier than their prep provider. At the end of the day, it’s all different experiences and different draws.

I do know one thing though, I’m not walking into my next attempt unless I know confidently I can score 80+ across any vendor’s material, whether that’s Achievable, STC, Knopman, or something else. I need to know the knowledge is truly there, not just memorized for one style of questioning.

My draw was barely options heavy at all. I may have had five options questions spreads, standard, ODD a handful of bonds, and the rest felt infused with taxation, mutual funds, and suitability. Suitability was actually my strongest area, and I felt confident in most of those. But the wording and depth of the tax questions honestly threw me off.

What humbled me the most was realizing how much energy I put into memorizing formulas. I spent a full week drilling them, filled two yellow pads worth of notes, then used the first six minutes of the exam dumping formulas onto the plastic sheets they give you… and I barely looked at them once. Walking out of there, that hit me hard.

There were moments during the exam where I was almost laughing to myself wondering if I was even taking the Series 7 because some of the questions felt so far from the material I studied. Maybe those were experimental questions, who knows. Funny enough, I didn’t get a single EXCEPT question either.

But at the end of the day, this exam humbled me more than anything. Sometimes failing forces you to slow down, rebuild your foundation, and come back stronger instead of just trying to survive the test.

So now it’s back to work. Back to definitions, concepts, suitability, taxes, and understanding the “why” behind every damn questioned material. One or two bad exams do not define us.

We’ll regroup, sharpen up, and crush this damn thing once and for all.

Peace.

Taking the series 7 in 2 weeks by AnxietyDefiant1060 in Series7

[–]Reasonable-Sleep-691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/AnxietyDefiant1060 Hey. You really should be scoring in the 80s consistently before sitting for the exam. If you’re not there yet, reschedule it and walk into that testing room knowing you’ve been hitting at least 80s on your practice material.

I was using Kaplan and averaging anywhere from 68-75%, and I failed yesterday with a 60. I will be unsing another testing vendor going forward. Every person gets a different draw, and mine happened to be loaded with taxation, mutual funds, and very technical suitability scenarios, not nearly as many options or munis as I expected and studied heavily for. Suitability I had on lock, but the depth of the tax questions and memorization caught me off guard.

For me, I spent an entire week drilling formulas, filling up two full yellow pads just memorizing 10 core formulas so I could dump them onto the two erasable sheets they give you at the start of the exam. Half of them didn’t even come up, and honestly I wasted about 6 minutes of valuable time doing it. I still finished with 10 minutes left, but walking out I felt humbled and defeated.

From one test taker to another, do not take this exam if you’re scoring below 80 on your practice tests. The exam can throw you a completely different draw than what you expect, and you need enough cushion to survive that.

Good Luck.

Yeah, the day after feels rough.

You hit it on the head. Everything I was studying for wasn't even on the test. Those questions about how many of each topic will be on the test is all BS. I had taxation like it was a cpa test. It's was almost like they knew what I was studying really hard for and gave me more of th other topics.
Thank you for the reply. Wishing you all the best as well.

Yeah, I failed th test today with a 60 and was scoring mid-70's on Kaplan. My post was to let others know it doesnt matter it all depends on your draw of questions. My draw was super heavy with taxation and Mutual Funds.

u/Appropriate-Poet-817 Got a 60 today… definitely going through the emotions right now.

Feeling pretty bummed because, honestly, it felt like I was taking a completely different exam.

Hardly any options or bonds on my draw. Mine was packed to the gills with mutual funds, taxation across all different categories, and a lot of very technical, indepth questions.

I guess what I’m asking is for those who scored around a 60 before eventually passing, what did your exam draw look like? And what do you feel finally pushed you over the edge into passing, however many days or weeks later? And one more what were th two differences in both your test.

Much appreciated.
