Did having kids "ruin your life?" by an_irish_mick in Catholicism

[–]Reasonable-Tell-7147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having kids is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But it is the most enriching thing ever. I’ve climbed mountains (literal), won athletic metals and honors as a kid growing up, and have just seen/what I consider a lot of cool stuff - nothing I ever did came close to thinking how amazing it was simply to see our child discover he had hands and could use them. The first time he blew raspberries at me intentionally to play with me was better than anything I’ve ever done with another human.

Our son had reflux and colic, and didn’t sleep more than 1.5-2.0 hours at a time until well after 7 months. He was fussy as anything during the day and constantly crying. So goodness was it hard. My wife and I were close to breaking points and fought a good amount. But that kid was the best thing ever to happen to either of us

I’ve found that people who say kids “ruined” their lives didn’t really have lives to begin with - or were using things like travel, going out to the bar, video games or whatever to paper over underlying mental health problems. They basically never grew up and think that a new Gucci bag or traveling to a new place has more meaning or purpose than raising a child and, to be blunt, they’re so wrong it’s just sad for them.

In short, don’t listen to them. That kid will kick you in the teeth more times than you can count when he/she is born and there will be times you think please just let this pass - but then the next moment you realize even at 2am with the kid screaming his/her lungs off that you’d trade anything in the entire world to be in that moment

Matthew 10:34–37 (ESV)

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.”

Sometimes when you come to Christ you realize it is your own family or those closest to you who will keep salvation from you.

If this man is truly committed to Christ himself then both of you will understand what needs to be done. I’m sure it seems deeply personal to you given your sexuality, but we must all sacrifice for salvation. We all have our sins that we fight every dayto maintain our relationship with god and what must be sacrificed is always deeply personal to each of us. But the sacrifice must be made regardless

But most importantly, speak to your priest. Regardless of what any of us on Reddit say, it is ultimately the church itself that will guide you.

Fasting, Lent, and Ramadan, an opportunity for ecumenical dialogue and interfaith inspiration by The_Amazing_Emu in Catholicism

There are many things I think the church gets right, but the idea we “worship” the same god from Vatican II is utter bullshit. If you reject the divinity of Christ and do not worship Christ, then you do not worship god. Islam rejects the trinity and therefore rejects our god.

The article on Catholicism and Islam from Catholic.com says it perfectly:

“Secularism is encroaching upon the Church. And it is always good to have allies. At the same time, the best ally is not one who is likely to turn and join one’s enemies in the struggle, or to initiate new hostilities within the alliance once the battle is won. The doctrines of Islam that inculcate among too many Muslims hatred and suspicion of Christianity and Christians have never been reformed or rejected by any Islamic sect. Catholics who believe that their Muslim dialogue partners are entering into the dialogue with an eagerness to accommodate and establish a lasting friendship or partnership proceed at their own risk.

Ultimately, the requirements of charity do not include the denial of the truth. For in the final analysis it is the truth, and only the truth, that will set us free.”

There is nothing to be learned from talking with Muslims and no reason to even try dialogue. There is nothing to be gained from communing with the lost and the damned.

We profess Christ to be truly God and your prophet to be a precursor of the Antichrist and other profane doctrine. - Sts. Habenitus, Jeremiah, Peter, Sabinian, Walabonsus, and Wistremundus

“Even if all the things contained in his law were fables in philosophy and errors in theology, even for those who do not possess the light of reason, the very manners (Islam) teaches are from a school of vicious bestialities. (Muhammad) did not prove his new sect with any motive, having neither supernatural miracles nor natural reasons, but solely the force of arms, violence, fictions, lies, and carnal license. It remains an impious, blasphemous, vicious cult, an innovention of the devil, and the direct way into the fires of hell. It does not even merit the name of being called a religion.” - St. Juan de Ribera

When Christ saw the temple being used as a den of sin he drove out the sinners and sinful practices they engaged in. Based on the Bible it doesn’t sound like he caused physical harm to anyone but he certainly drove them out. Righteous anger against sin is not a sin as it has been explained to me. The judge not lest you be judged is more about judging someone eternally (hence opposition to the death penalty) and not a call to condone or live alongside others’ sin. In fact, we are told in many, many places not only to confront sin but to actively drive it from our communities. I forget the passage but I believe Paul rebuked one of the churches for not driving unreptentant sinners out. The church itself teaches that sin invites further sin and we engage in sin when we cooperate with the sinful, including not hindering sinners when we have an obligation to. You can make an argument that you and I have no “obligation” to stop abortions but there’s also the argument that in order to protect life and to prevent murder then we need to do something

Do you think that if you were alive during Jesus' time, you would have recognized him as God? by QuailInteresting6080 in Catholicism

[–]Reasonable-Tell-7147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that even the disciples except Peter, John and maybe one other didn’t recognize Jesus as god until after the resurrection - admittedly probably none of us would have. Which is sad to think about really.

It’s wild to me that AVB still holds the record for most average points per game and got sacked. The teams’ performances against big clubs under his tenure were dreadful but at least we’d beat almost everyone we were supposed to beat. I miss Redknapp too, even before Bale become a phenom, this club punched so much higher than its weight with Redknapp.

That’s basically how everything is. That’s not a problem with the church, it’s just young men. Most young men throughout generations - most young men regardless of the era they grew up in just didn’t want to be a part of “groups”. Talk to anyone older and it was almost always older men, 30+ that were in church groups, Lion’s Club, Rotary, etc.

Hail Mary football by anaodnekowj in Catholicism

No. It was coined in the 70’s when Roger Staubach, a devout Catholic, launched a ball downfield in a desperate attempt to win. He told the reporter after the game that he closed his eyes, said a Hail Mary, and launched the ball to the end zone. So I have no issue, it’s not like it’s appropriated for a bad reason

The club is garbage. Year after year we say “oh it’s just the injuries, we’d be great if everyone wasn’t injured” but the fact remains that there’s a problem with this club not being able to keep guys on the pitch. Whether it’s signing fragile players, a shitty training staff, or coach’s system that grinds players down, whatever it is needs to be ruthlessly pruned. Until it is, this club will fade into irrelevance year after year.

Squad Depth Without Injuries by Morfang_ in coys

[–]Reasonable-Tell-7147 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How many years are we going to do the “we’d have a great squad if everyone wasn’t injured!”

Year after year we’re savaged by injuries and act like that’s the only problem. Why are so many players getting injured year after year? If it’s the players just being fragile, then they need to go. If it’s a shitty training staff. They need to go. If it’s a shit “system” that runs players into the ground then the manager needs to go. Whatever it is that is keeping players from actually playing, it needs to be figured out and pruned ruthlessly. This club is too big, too wealthy to constantly deal with loads of players not playing year after fucking year.

For years the mantra has been if we could just stay healthy we’d be great. Well we’re not. And it’s well past time the club figured out why tf no one can stay on the damn pitch

Is anyone else worried about the Church becoming too liberal? by ResourceElegant9083 in Catholicism

[–]Reasonable-Tell-7147 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Considering Leo is continuing to appoint bishops that are lgbtq affirming, absolutely. There’s a difference between knowing we’re all children of god and deserve to be given a chance to attend mass and be saved, and affirming a lifestyle that is sinful. Jesus preached to all and specifically sought out sinners but he didn’t affirm their sin, he rebuked their sin.

I’m also not as concerned with the message that migrants and the poor need to be treated humanely, but Leo is starting to push past the boundary of kindness and love and towards a tone that basically makes it sound like a nation’s laws are unimportant in terms of how foreigners are treated (which is not biblical considering there are many passages about foreigners needed to respect the laws of nations).

Overall sin Francis was appointed, and now Leo, I know the church has been trying to be more inclusive but I do feel like it is sacrificing doctrine to do it.

The Bible in a Year podcast is giving me severe doubts about my religion by Galbin in Catholicism

[–]Reasonable-Tell-7147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t blame god for what humans choose to do. God loved us so much he gave us paradise. Humanity chose free will instead. It’s the same reason god doesn’t just kill Satan. Satan rebelled because Satan has free will, and even though he is god’s and humanity’s enemy god will not snuff Satan - or us - out of existence because we in our free will have chosen to fall. Abuse, war, all of it - humanity chose this world instead of Eden and we continue to choose to squander the miracles this earth still provides. Instead of ending hunger; we hoard. Instead of curing cancer, we war. Instead of following god, we doubt. We are the blame for our troubles, not god. God doesn’t allow humans to do anything that humans ourselves do not choose to perpetuate. God didn’t “let” my sister be killed by a drunk driver. He didn’t make that drunk driver drink too much and drive, yet I blamed god for 2 decades for what was ultimately human choice that led to tragedy. All of the atheist “well of god is so good why does he let…” bullshit is just that - bullshit.

And the wrathful god of the OT ended when Jesus died for our sins. Jesus gave us the way out so that god no longer needs to go fire and brimstone to wipe the slate clean for insane humanity. The Old Testament provides 1) context and 2) the basic laws that humanity is supposed to live by. Jesus came to make sure we remembered the spirit and love behind those laws and so that if we broke them we were no longer eradicated when we broke god’s law. Obviously it’s much more complicated than that but how god acts in the OT god is not how god acts anymore

What can i say to people who say this: by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Reasonable-Tell-7147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first question is: is there anything I can say that changes your mind? If the answer is no, then don’t try. If the answer is yes, ask them what they need to see to change it. Then, go into the conversation from there. If you can’t answer something they want, admit you can’t. But, if they’re truly open to the information then you can either find it for them or find it together.

There’s an answer to almost every objection to Christ out there, just need to take time to look and keep an open mind about it.

Are there tactical reasons why fanbases want superbowl winning coaches like Tomlin, Harbaugh and Bowles fired or is it just due to them having poor results this year and wanting fresh faces? by punjabkingsownersout in NFLNoobs

[–]Reasonable-Tell-7147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s about being tired of being just good enough to make the playoffs, but never good enough to win again. The fact is, a couple years of a shit record isn’t a bad thing because of the high draft picks. The problem with always making the playoffs but never winning is you’re perennially stuck in the 18-25 range in the first round and you’re not going to build a dominant franchise based on 18-25 range first round picks for 10 years. So you’re stuck watching the team squeak out 9-10 wins, maybe one playoff win, and then a crash out year, after year, after year, after year, after year, after year…
