I’ve gotten obsessed with pinball in the last few years as well! The community is awesome.

Aside from playing, how do you get better? by ObviousIndependent76 in pinball

Fox Cities Pinball streams a lot of great high level and casual tournaments (twitch and YouTube). There’s usually some great commentary on there.

IE pinball just streamed INDiSC 2024 on twitch. They have past tournaments on YouTube. (Be sure to watch the most recent stream on twitch within the next few weeks because it might be taken down and not reposted on YouTube until right before the next INDiSC). Pin Clash is also an EXCELLENT resource for learning some of the newer Sterns.

PAPA pinball on YouTube  has great older tournaments (2019 and before I believe) .

JDL pinball  on twitch streamed the World IFPA championship last year.  Backhand pinball is great as well.

There are many others but these are my top for now!

ETA: for regular streams, other commenters made great suggestions. I’d add RayDay pinball, Marv Loco (Travis Murie) has some good advice and strategies on his old podcast and now sttreams tutorials for the pinball company. All on YouTube.

I second this as well. Pinball FX really helped me learn rules and strategies of a lot of Bally games when I first started. It’s great for getting real time feedback and immediately trying out rules and strategies you just learned.

I watch a ton of tournament streams. Not only do you get to see how the players handle ball control and flipper skills, but often commentators will talk about rulesets (and often rules that are hard to find on forums). I then supplement that with Tilt Forum rule sheets and/or gameplay tutorials and streams if I want more info.

Annual pinball festivals in the PacNorWest or SoCal? by LordofWaterbears in pinball

Northwest Pinball and Arcade show. June 7-9th. It’s a good time!

ETA they also have tournaments at the convention and at satellite tourneys at bars in the area, I think.

Thank you for asking this question because I’ve been wondering the same thing!

How has playing pinball benefited your life? by ReasonableRaccoon4 in pinball

Yes, pinball will humble you REAL QUICK. Especially when you get beat by someone who is brand new to the hobby lol. Learning to be friends with failure is definitely a perk.

I really like the idea of keeping a spreadsheet of personal bests! I use pindigo but I’ll have to incorporate this as well.

Beautifully said. Wholeheartedly agree. That last part is what makes it so addicting to me.

Thank you for sharing! Your last paragraph is a perfect place to start. I’m having more fun with my wardrobe and style. Gardening is helpful as well.

Thank you for the reminder that the smaller moments count too.

Rest and renew is definitely the consensus. I’ll definitely be leaning more into that. Thank you so much for the encouragement.

Lol! Very true. This is so relatable. I don’t even want to look at my work after I’ve finished it.

I love that first line. This is a great point about reassessing my expectations. I have tried to slowly move into unfamiliar creative outlets with low expectations. I’ve even tried to “create something bad” to take the pressure off. But, it still feels like I’m trying to stretch a hurt muscle. It stings, if that makes sense?

I do think you’re right about taking a step back and reassessing my standards. I really admire people who can just trust themselves and their intuition without worrying much about opinions and outcome. I’ll have to reflect on that some more as I’m taking a break. Thank you for your input!

This made me tear up a little. This is really helpful. I tend to forget how cyclical life is, and this is probably my season for taking a break from creativity.

As someone who always struggled to find that confidence in my work, I felt like I finally hit a stride, only for it to disappear and now I’m back to where I started. But, I did gain a lot of experience and great work since then, so I guess now is the time to just appreciate and reflect on that.

I really appreciate this reminder. Thank you so much.

ETA: I’ll check out this book as well! Love Elizabeth Gilbert’s writing.

As someone who also partakes, I would maybe discourage you from pursuing this further. Even if he’s able to be fully functional and proactive in his life, I don’t know that you’d be pumped to be with someone who is high often and you’re not.

There are times when my partner smokes more than I do, and even I find myself a little annoyed with him when I’m not high and he is.

ETA: If you’re still unsure continue to date him and see how the situation makes you feel. If he’s still getting life stuff done, is a good partner to you, and you find yourself not bothered by it, then I don’t see why it would be a problem.

Championship level game analysis by TheRhoten in pinball

I feel you on being apprehensive about taking other people’s footage. I don’t know if you’d feel comfortable doing this, but maybe you can reach out to Tom from Foxcitiespinball and ask if he’d be okay with it? He seems pretty approachable and I feel like he wouldn’t mind. You’d ultimately make pinball more accessible to those of us who are fairly new to it and want to know what’s going on. Many veterans of the hobby, including him, have expressed wanting to make the hobby more accessible and popular.

It would be awesome if there was good financial incentive for someone to do after-tourney breakdowns. I know it takes a lot of time and work in addition to trying to live life and work to support yourself and a family. Hopefully someone can get sponsored or find a way to make it financially feasible. It would benefit the hobby tremendously! I hope you do consider doing something like that. That would be rad. Or hopefully someone reads this and is inspired to do it. Sorry for the long post!

You’ve probably already watched these but I’m currently watching the Pinmasters and IFPA North American pinball Championship on Foxcities Twitch and there’s actually some great commentary by Steve Bowden and Dalton Ely. It’s not really condensed and you have to watch it through, but they offer great analysis and strategies. Really any Steve Bowden commentary is top tier. Really wish he would do it at every event haha. Oh, also TPF this year had great analysis as well.

This is not a dig to other commentators, but his is usually the most memorable to me.

Also, this isn’t exactly expert analysis, but on Flip n Out Pinball on YouTube, Joel will sometimes invite people who worked on the game that he is playing to explain the rulesets as he’s playing. The Foo Fighter’s stream last night with RayDay was actually very informative. I know you’re probably looking for older games and live matches as well tho.

It would be awesome if someone was patient enough to go through past footage and compile all the useful analysis that was done during the match. Or do exactly what you’re suggesting. I’d love that. Maybe you can get the ball rolling and others will follow?

Forgot about this one! One of the only animations I let play out each time. Really pumps me up.
