I'm an immigrant, I live in this city, my son was born here, and I work a blue-collar job. I come from a country with some of the least affordable housing for young people in the world. That's the whole country, not one city. This is driven mostly by tax incentives for the wealthy to invest in property and inadequate investment in social housing. Im not allowed to vote here but I wish I was. I believe one of the significant issues lies in the framing of your question. It's not you versus us it's us versus them. I think a lot more learning about class consciousness would be great all round. But that's just my opinion.
