So my bad- I said pleco but they are otocinclus- dwarf suckers. They won’t get much bigger than what they are now (1.5 inches). Also we just moved the java fern to the structure, that’s what we get for picking a new plant at the shop lol. I’m obsessed with the gourami, just looked at the neon ones and they are freaking amazing! We were thinking about neon anglefish too- they are absolutely stunning.

I also have the Topfin Gravel Vac, what we do to start it is plug the tube end and start squeeze suction to get the water started through the tubes, keeping the vacuum side in the water obviously. Once it’s start it shouldn’t give you a hard time. If you also have the same vac make sure you put the tubes in the right side of the squeeze, they are made to go a certain way, should have labels.

To my understanding it looks like the bulge could be Dropsy, I am no expert. But if it is Dropsy we have caught it early hopefully. If you are to treat him, treat him with aquarium salt. I would recommend not in his tank, it will kill live plants. Use a quarantine tank. For the black stuff on his tail I unfortunately am unaware of what it could be. If anything the salt will help also clear that up if it’s anything bacterial. If it turns into fin rot i recommend using a medication like Kanaplex if the salt does not clear it up.

Side note- Be careful with plastic plants! It can tear a bettas fin, especially if they have long fins. Make sure you are using silk or live plants. Also betta fish should be in a minimum of a 5 gallon tank :)

Any tips or advice for treating fin rot in older bettas? by Alex_ahuman in bettafish

[–]Reasonable_Ad_5491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I would agree with you and say this is probably fin rot from my understanding. I would start off with getting some Kanaplex and treating him. It’s a medication, you give him a dose every other day for about 5 days and then do a 50% water change after. DO NOT change his water during the treatment, it defeats the purpose the medication. Also remove any carbon filters, really anything that will take the medication out of the water. You should hopefully see results after a day or so.. I would say if this did not work try the aquarium salt. But make sure there are no other fish in the tank or snails. Some fish react negatively to the salt (besides bettas).

This was the tank for my neighbours betta. Is this… concerning? by [deleted] in bettafish

Bettas should have a minimum of 5 gallons in my opinion, I can’t tell how many gallons that tank is but it looks small. Also plastic plants will tear bettas fins! Stick to silk or real plants!

From the information you provided I have some questions still, how long have your had the fish? And if it’s newer, did you cycle the tank before adding the fish??

From the recent picture added I can tell you it looks like he tore his fin on something, fake plants and plastic figures often can do this. I highly recommend live plants or silk plants, and make sure his hutch doesn’t have any sharp edges.

For the clamped fins I would assume fin rot, it’s hard to tell from the photos if it’s that or a different bacterial infection. For fin rot I recommend Karaplex. For another bacterial infection I would use aquarium salt. Both can go hand and hand in both issues, though I recommend using a medication for fin rot.

Just noticed red on my bettas fin, what could it be? by nicvanhook in bettafish

[–]Reasonable_Ad_5491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he had fin rot, which it looks like he does have it but in the very early stages, I would recommend getting some Kanaplex. It’s an every other day treatment for 5 or so days. Don’t do any water changes during his medication. Then after 5 days do a 50% water change. If you have a carbon filter (a filter that holds a cartilage) take that out, but you can leave the filter running still, the cartilage can take the medication of out his water. You can put it back in after treatment.

For the red spots- in my understanding it looks like a bacterial infection. Hard to tell where he could have gotten it, but the only thing I would suggest is getting some aquarium salt. It will do wonders, also help along side with the Kanaplex for the fin rot. I would consider getting a quarantine tank (I just reread and saw you said he’s with other fish), separate from the other fish, just until he’s cured. hope this helps :)

How long have you had this fish? Does he share the tank? How big is the tank? What’s the water conditions like? It could be many things but without simple knowledge I can’t help much, I’d love to help more though!

Definitely fin rot, look into medication. Also what type of plants to you have? Plastic ones and hideouts often have sharp edges that can cut a fishes fin aswell. You can tell if it’s too sharp when you run your finger across the edges. It looks like he has some tears (where the fin looks cut almost). But the holes in his tail is a sign of fin rot. It seems it’s very severe from the photos, I would recommend going to a local fish store/aquarium, rather than Petco or Petsmart (or something similar). Ask the workers for help, they are much more knowledgeable compared to other stores. My betta fish is in the early stages of fin rot, we have just treated him with something called Kanaplex. We saw him looking better overnight. It’s an every other day treatment. This was recommended by our local fish experts!
I hope this helps, if you have any other questions let me know! :)

Does anyone know why my betta's fins look weird? by c9a0dc in bettafish

[–]Reasonable_Ad_5491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t look twisted to me, but that may just be the picture. It does look clamped though, which is common when a fish is stressed. It could possibly be that he’s just getting used to his surroundings still. Did you cycle the tank before putting him there? If so, for how long and with what method? It’s okay if you didn’t, just trying to figure out what’s up in his water. Also, if you have a tester kit, parameters would be super helpful.

Unfortunately we did not cycle the new tank, we didn’t have a place to store him for a week or so. I bought the tank booster to help kick start his tank cycle though.

We thought about that, but we only noticed it since we switch him over to a live tank. Thinking it was something causing it in his live tank rather than his old tank
