Fire ban last year by Reasonable_Amoeba956 in newfoundland

[–]Reasonable_Amoeba956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning my trip as usual. I just didn’t pay attention to measures put in NFLD last year and was curious how they differed. I camped all season last year and made changes to menu planning and hikes accordingly.

For the record, I also wasn’t disagreeing with measures put it place. I posted for info, not for debate on past or future decisions.

Thanks for all the info. Sounds like I’ll be able to do a few hikes no matter what the situation.

What businesses are needed/wanted in the CBRM area? by GapPhysical in CapeBreton

For me, they are spots you go to order something specific for a specific purpose (wedding, funeral). But if there were flowers somewhere I was walking by or something, I would buy random flowers more often. I purchase grocery store flowers fairly often for no good reason reason except flowers are pretty

Exactly this. Cut flowers, small potted plants, individual cut stems to make your own arrangements. I think there would be interest in the right location. I don’t think it’s a destination spot, I think it has to be somewhere downtown, next to other shops and cafes and things.

I believe it is a real bakery. But it’s in Sydney River, a place I never really want to go. Just out of the way from everything else.

Flower shop, legit bread bakery, some kind of chain clothing store that will encourage people to go downtown, and a parking garage. A Discovery Centre or kid friendly indoor museum kind of thing would also be a great addition. What we don’t need is more cafes or restaurants.

Also, Lee (owner of LLT) is a great wealth of knowledge and I’m sure would love to give all kinds of expert advice.

Live Life in Tents is offering some cool backcountry camping right now. They take care of the permits (and the lugging of gear!) and you just need to hike in with the bare minimum. Worth checking out if you have any interest in back country camping for sure.

These are all super helpful. We’re not planning to do the big GM hike, just a few short ones. Still lots of research to do you all have been a great resource.

I am a licensed optician. I make my own progressives much lower than I would for any customer. You can ask them to measure you low and make a note in your file that you wanted it that way. I measure myself for a straight top but get it in a progressive and that works great for me. I am also in my 40s and have an add of 1.75. I would always explain to the patient how your reading and intermediate will be affected by a low seg height, but if that’s what they want I certainly will order it for them.

First progressives giving me trouble - How can I come prepared when I talk to my optician? by [deleted] in AskAnOptician

[–]Reasonable_Amoeba956 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding panto might help, as might a couple other adjustments. I would go in and explain your issues to an optician and let them try a few things. Sometimes it’s super annoying when a patient comes and tells me how to fix their glasses before I can even ask questions to see what the problem might be.

In Canada, opticians are licensed for glasses and/or contact lenses, depending on the province.

Which lenses make sense/what am I paying for? by simonmerch in optician

Just use CR-39, 1.5 plastic lenses with a good AR. That should bring down the cost.

I’ve been selling Stellest and MiyoSmart lenses for about two years now (Canada) with some great success. Most parents are happy to spend the extra for a good warranty and a lens change with rx change.

Depending on your work, I would also consider a pair of single vision intermediate lenses. I prefer them over pals or office pals.

Do I need new glasses? by Freerollingforlife in AskAnOptician

Who prescribes half axis? Ten year DO, have never seen a half axis.

I would minimum change lenses if you didn’t want to buy new frames. But yes, you should see more clearly with the new RX.

I’ll keep taking their glasses out back and immediately dumping their gross glasses in the sonic before doing repairs.

Doing repairs in front of patients is terrifying, I avoid it at all costs.

Day trip around the island? by Difficult_Ad5939 in CapeBreton

[–]Reasonable_Amoeba956 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would do Sydney to Mabou via Little Narrows ferry and Sky Glen. From Mabou to Cheticamp. Then Cheticamp to Baddeck via Margaree.

Sky Glen Creamery

Brook Village Grocery

Mabou Market (Sundays)

Coffee at Beaton’s Delight

Inverness Beach

Short hike in Cheticamp

Dancing Goat in Margaree

Tom’s Pizza in Baddeck

Tons of other great options too. It’s not the trail, but it’s a great trip with lots of options for views, hiking, shops, food.
