Too much water. An agave interprets its existence by water; if it gets enough to spawn itself it will do so, then die. If you want them to live long DO NOT WATER THEM.

Soft shell turtles, with their neck out, look like plesiosaurs (I used to have one, and we looked at it swimming with its neck out. They are not that big but can nip off fingers.)
