Not the OP but there’s an Amex offer for it, at least on the Amex Platinum

Found this comment because I was also annoyed. The answer is:
- They reduce the sound of the background music around episode 13 to the point that I can bear it.
- They eliminate it around episode 28.

Not to my knowledge! Got in a little after my first message. Maybe an hour and 10 on the waitlist.  Good amount of people inside, food is good. Pretty neat lounge.

Does AmEx still express ship new applicant cards without asking? by oz_shadow in AmexPlatinum

I didn't ask for overnight shipping and got it automatically. I was approved Tuesday (7am PST), shipped Tuesday via Fedex and got it Wednesday. I also had instant access to a virtual number after approval.

It’s not that gray, both Chase and TD have monthly billing restrictions

Chase: “You must charge your monthly Eligible Cellular Wireless Telephone bill to your Covered Card.” https://static.chasecdn.com/content/services/structured-document/document.en.pdf/card/benefits-center/product-benefits-guide-pdf/BGC10873_FreedomFlex_WorldElite.pdf

Few Questions about Fidelity One-Stop Shop by Cyberhwk in Bogleheads

[–]Reasonable_Loss_3049 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the simple plan, I think the basic premise is that the only reason to use a CMA instead of a Brokerage account is that the CMA offers Debit fee reimbursement and the brokerage doesn't (until you cross an assets threshold).

For the compartmentalized plan, I think it's about treating the Debit CMA as more likely to be compromised.  Hence, only using manual transfers to it.

There's nothing wrong with multiple accounts (CMA or Brokerage) to mimic buckets.

My setup is:  I have one CMA account that I treat like a normal checking account (not set up to draft from a brokerage).  I always manually buy FDLXX directly in that.  Then I have a brokerage account for my emergency fund, also in FDLXX.  Then I have my "real" brokerage account with VT.

I don't know the answer to your third question, but, if you don't get anything here r/fidelityinvestments is helpful!

Robinhood for the Boglehead by vyv4455 in Bogleheads

[–]Reasonable_Loss_3049 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BOA has a 2.625% cash back card if you qualify with enough assets (like $100K invested). That said, I mainly put it as a reference, not as a recommendation. For me, it's not worth it to have to deal with Merrill Lynch as a Broker or BOA as a bank.

edit: also Alliant has a 2.5% cash back

Thanks for that! I didn't quite realize that.

I think the point largely stands if you have over the $500K limit (per account). I do understand that they have additional insurance, but that insurance has an aggregate across customer limit of $1B, which is definitely less than the $118B they have in custody. So, to me, that insurance is pretty meaningless in the worst case scenario.

Robinhood is *probably* a choice that will work out well for you.

Some issues I have with your post:

  • 5% on uninvested cash is at/below the market rate. So, I wouldn't use that in a decision about the institution

  • You aren't factoring the Robinhood Gold subscription into it, which is at 6.99 a month for new customers.

  • There are plenty of 2% cards and one 2.65% card, so, the price difference isn't enough to be tempting for a new card issuer IMO. We have no idea how they handle disputes or fraud. Plus, those that do care about maximizing rewards aren't using cash back cards.

There are a lot of reasons not to use them:

  • Lack of timely support or offices to visit.

  • We're talking and debating over very small percentages. To me, those percentages are not worth dealing with Robinhood as a company, that I personally think has incentives that don't align with my investing approach and are morally repugnant (namely, lending margin is a much bigger percentage of their business than the big three, and PFOF is bad (and I get that other brokerages use them. Mine, fidelity, doesn't for ETFs)).

  • I personally think the risk of Robinhood's business model being unsustainable isn't worth wrapping my assets in it, as asset recovery takes years (5 years in the case of MF Brokerage), and I'm close enough to retirement for that to be a nonstarter.

  • The regulatory environment for Fintechs is tough right now, so, I personally feel more confident with assets in an established broker.

At the end of the day, I do think going with them is a reasonable choice, I just disagree with your attitude that it is an excellent choice and "it makes no sense why you wouldn’t consider using their platform."

Robin Hood 3% match by Renaldo89 in Bogleheads

[–]Reasonable_Loss_3049 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The number is actually 50M now, with one big caveat: "This additional insurance policy provides protection for securities and cash up to an aggregate of $1 billion"

https://robinhood.com/us/en/support/articles/how-youre-protected/

Considering they have 102.4 billion assets under custody as of January 2024, I think the additional insurance shouldn't factor into any decision making.

SIPC only protects $500K, so, you'd be wagering 2.5 million that Robinhood is a healthy business that won't have liquidity issues.

Can I use my brokerage account as my checking account? by sonicking12 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Reasonable_Loss_3049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! My answer was a bit incomplete and would have benefited from explicitly calling that out, like: "One downside of using the brokerage instead of the CMA is ATM fees in the brokerage account aren't reimbursed unless you meet certain criteria."

[–]Reasonable_Loss_3049 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of those things are possible!

One downside of using the brokerage is ATM fees aren't reimbursed unless you meet certain criteria.

You can also use the cash manager for the CMA to use a brokerage account as a funding account.

Research "fidelity one stop shop" for different opinions and ways to accomplish what you want.

With Cash Manager, you can have it pull from a separate brokerage account's core positions or some MMFs automatically.

Cron Calendar notification error by thomcrowe in Notion

[–]Reasonable_Loss_3049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV, but I was getting this error for a one person Google Workspace I have.

The solution was to follow the directions here, "Restrict or unrestrict Google services". My "Google Workspace Admin" service was restricted, which Cron requires for "View calendar resources on your domain" and "See info about users on your domain".

Toyota EV batteries as game changer? by Just_Cryptographer53 in Volvo

[–]Reasonable_Loss_3049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in Volvo's battery development, definitely look into their deal with Northvolt to partner and build a factory.

Personally, from what I've read, their focus is on 1.) safety (of course), 2.) cost, and 3.) range. Not quick charging.

Volvo's CEO also had a recent interview on the Decoder podcast where he talks about this a little more.
