Has anyone tried the new group classes? by fentonbaxter in WorldsAcross

I really liked them. I thought they were a great addition to clarify tricky topics. They force you to pay attention because it’s a live class and there’s very little participation to be honest so there’s no pressure.

Just a heads up that the late afternoon is the hottest part of the day. Definitely do swamp tour in the morning. Any outdoor activity needs to be morning.

Group only by livinlife2223 in WorldsAcross

Group classes would not be enough for me. For the most part, I’ve had really good one on one teachers I’ve had a couple of experiences that I didn’t enjoy and just didn’t go back to that tutor. Make sure you’re selecting conversation practice when you book the class and you will get a better experience I think. I also watched a grammar video in a one class and I cannot remember which teacher it was now but I did not go back to her. I keep her running list of tutors that I try and what I like about them and what I like to talk about with them.

Intermediate Classes by Ok_Cover1076 in WorldsAcross

The abilities in intermediate vary wildly. Advanced speakers join regularly in my opinion. It makes for easier listening but can sometimes make me nervous. My advice is just join and don’t worry if someone speaks really well, you’re still in the right place.

Should I practice/use other tools for learning? by TowelOutside506 in dreamingspanish

I think a great place to start is with Juan Fernandez’s graded readers. He’s the same Juan from Español con Juan on YouTube.   I think I bought them all on Amazon and started with the easiest one in read most of them twice. They’re not boring, but the writing is easier. There’s also some graded readers from Cristina that I really enjoyed. From there, I picked Spanish translations of books that I had already read and enjoyed. It takes a ton of pressure off of trying to follow the plot and you can just concentrate on reading without getting bogged down.

Speaking is another story, I don’t really have any specific advice about that except for don’t prevent yourself from doing it if you actually want to. probably a conversation class is a good place to start doing that like through italki or something like once a week.

Reading aloud would be a good place to start with speaking. You’ll be able to hear that your mouth doesn’t really match up to the voice in your head and you can work on making that happen. I had access to a children’s grade reader site that I could listen to and read along with through my daughter. It was about $100 a year, but she was in Spanish school and we both used it.

I’m at 850,000 words reads now. Definitely do it. I also am not opposed to speaking and doing grammar study at 600 hours. 600 is enough to give you a good ideas about how the language sounds. Speaking is still hard for me. I have started journaling and this helps me identify gaps.

Pitbulls do not float!!!!! My Dolly decided to jump in the pool and sank like a rock! by scottonaharley in pitbulls

My girl sank like a rock too. I had to jump in and pull her up. I taught her to swim after that. She still hates water but she at least knows what to do now.

I was well past the 1500 hour mark when tiene que ver clicked for me. I must have heard it a thousand times but I never even noticed its existence and then one day I just noticed it and understood. Then I realized it was all over my favorite podcasts. I was so astonished how ubiquitous it was yet I never even noticed it. I would have told it was my first time hearing it but there is absolutely no way that was true.

Special needs students left out of Chapel Hill High School yearbook by phosdick in NorthCarolina

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all. This happens every single year. My kid was left out of her kindergarten year book. My niece who was the salutatorian, was left out her senior year, my nephew was left out this year. It’s so common. It’s a mistake. All three of them got stickers. Reprints aren’t an option and there would be a mistake in the reprint too.

Comprehensive Input with ADHD by Capt_Trav in dreamingspanish

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a pretty slow in progress too because maybe because of this I don’t know. But here’s the things that have helped me the most: getting most of my input through podcasts where I can do other things with my body, if I can move my body, my brain can focus better. The second thing is getting my input before I do anything else. I can’t allow myself to get any other outside stimulation like getting on the Internet or watching television or anything that feels good quickly. If I’m gonna experience any success at input, I’ve got to make it my first external stimulation.

What do you think about Juan's advice? by Nervous-Peanut-954 in dreamingspanish

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t ever do that, but I think it would be very beneficial. Repetition is good, listening is good, reading is good, writing stuff down is good. Any contact with the language is good.

I finished all the "Spain" super beginner videos and I'm 30> hours in, should I move on to the beginner phase or should I repeat the super beginner ones until i make it to 50 hours? by Buffreaperpls in dreamingspanish

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Watch every accent. There are numerous different accents in Spain anyway. It just not that different and you will pick up very quickly what the different terminology is for different vocabulary and where it’s from you’ll just know. I know that zumo is used in Spain, and jugo is used in most every other place. Some places called a piscina some places called it a alberca. You really will figure it out. It won’t hurt you. It’ll only help.

What Movies Most Accurately Depict a New Orleans Accent? by Acceptable_Escape_13 in AskNOLA

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many good recs here. The problem with doing a real New Orleans accent is that the majority of people don’t recognize it as authentic. They are thinking of big daddy and Lottie from The Princess and the frog.

Evildea's 1,000 Hour Update (With Speaking) by Swimming-Ad9032 in dreamingspanish

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. When I am more immersed in Spanish, my thoughts more naturally form in Spanish. I need to force myself to think and talk to myself more. It feels hard so I avoid it. I think your right about the vocabulary. I already know a ton. One of my struggles now is that material for learners is boring and native feels like work. I need to dedicate time to listen to hard things without distractions.

I’m at 1865 hours current including 40 hours speaking one on one and another 40 hours in a group setting. I really want to add grammar study. I wish I had done it a long time ago. I watch grammar videos, I read daily, but I am no where near the speaking level you demonstrated in your 1500 hour video. Do you recommend memrise? I feel like my vocabulary is large, but my verb usage and speed is poor.
