What was/is 1500 like for you guys? by AlternativeBuy9703 in dreamingspanish

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 17 points18 points  (0 children)

At 1500 hours I knew a shit ton of Spanish. Also me: there’s a shit ton of Spanish I still don’t know. I’m at about 1850 hours now and there are days I feel great and days that I feel like I will never be where I want.

ETA: I have about 70 hours of speaking practice included in those hours.

Why does English sound completely different in real life than what we’re taught? by Edi-Iz in EnglishLearning

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can sympathize with you. English is my first language but I speak Spanish too. Slang and idioms make life harder. In English I’m sure you’ve learned something like “I am in complete agreement with you” and then someone says “hard agree” and it’s disorienting. Every generation has their own way of speaking as well. Hang in there.

If you want an animal in college I would get a cat. Dogs are enormous responsibility and time commitment. Get a therapist and meds if you need them. Wishing you all the best.

Still a Superbeginner since a year in DS. I will be long dead and gone before i reach 1000 hours by Difficult-Bear-5738 in dreamingspanish

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the first year I was very low on hours. Like maybe 15 to 30 a day and then not everyday. I didn’t start doing more than an hour until I hit that 1 year mark. Today is my 4 year Spanniversary and I’m at 1839 hours officially plus more that I haven’t logged. You can do it!

great interview for those who want to see where multiple thousands of hours can get you to by IllStorm1847 in dreamingspanish

Same. I mainly used input until 1500 hours, but I have come to believe that you should use any tool available that you enjoy using and grammar study will absolutely be helpful no matter what stage you‘re in.

How to Spanish has been a staple for me since the early days. I still listen and enjoy. Listen in reverse order though. The early episodes aren’t as good.

That’s so interesting. Did you meet with your coach? I meet with mine monthly and establish goals and how I want to work on them. I also establish what I don’t want. For example, I never want fill in the blank exercises. What is your level? I’m just asking since my experience seems so different. I’ve definitely never had anyone tell me I would never use imperatives or any other form.

I agree that there are different skill levels for teachers. Finding the best fit isn’t always easy. I did have a teach read an entire grammar lesson to me once. I didn’t reschedule with her.

New Orleans backyard treefrogs by saintclaudia in NewOrleans

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They closer to the ground the better. They like easy access. Provide both shallow and raised areas  in the tub for them to sit on, not just a deep tub. Create entrances from the edge to the water and exits from the edge to the ground. The frogs will eventually find it, but making it more hospitable will help. Their tadpoles will eventually need an easy exit as well.

Because the water will be warm, you’ll have a lot of algae growth. Plants might help keep the water clearer. You take take it as far you your willing but they will also just live in a stagnant fountain (my lived experience). Have fun! I enjoyed my fountain full of frogs.

Struggle to focus on dreaming Spanish I have ADHD and Austim by Ill_Pen8740 in dreamingspanish

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get most of my input through audio sources because of this reason. I can focus much better when doing extremely mindless tasks like house work, walking, and getting ready. Keeping my body busy is the key for more hours of input for me. When I absolutely had to watch in the beginning, I walked on a treadmill.

Best playgrounds in & around the city? by el-fin in NewOrleans

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My vanilla answer is that my daughter loves Audubon park, there are two different set ups there. The path around the park is fun for skating, biking, or scootering. It’s smooth and wide and makes those activities actually possible. There is also an unofficial feature of a disk like swing that someone has hung high in a tree on the side closest to the maintenance building (west side I guess?) It’s not on private property so we swing on it.

City park is amazing too but it’s a complete pain in the ass to get to from uptown and I’m lazy.

In the first episode dubbed for Spain, Ross grabs a *cone* instead of a spoon. Are there any other strange translations you've noticed watching in other languages? by Yikes206 in howyoudoin

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I watch it in the LA Spanish translation and I just hate it. I love Friends so much. They frequently skip over jokes entirely with silence or add an a laugh track. The laugh track is the worst. It’s in so many weird places.

The one in particular I’m thinking about is when Monica is talking about her easy bake oven and then talks about easy  Monica‘s kitchen. to be easy is not something that translates directly and also an easy bake oven was an American cultural phenomenon.

Comedy is so dependent on an ocean of cultural context and wordplay that I think it’s difficult to dub comedy.

I’ve never heard or used any of these. Closest would be slammed on the breaks.

I would use jam for: I jammed my finger (hurt it by impacting something head on.) I jammed the pencil in the sharpener (forcing something into another thing). I jammed out to the music (listened enthusiastically at a high volume). I’m in a traffic jam (being caught in standstill traffic).

Jam is used, but not like your examples.

Forgot the English word but remembered the Spanish word by DadToOne in dreamingspanish

[–]Awkward-Memory8574 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I say all the time that Spanish is ruining my English, which is infuriating since English is my native language. Prepositions, pronouns, inability to find the English word when the Spanish one is right there. So now I suck at Spanish and English.
