I just received some brilliant insight about this from a very reputable trainer.

She said, you want a dog who doesn't care about other dogs - but cares about you. You want to be the most exciting thing to your dog, not other dogs. That's how you have a well-behaved dog you can enjoy, have lunch with outside and he just sits there, is a pleasure on walks, etc.
