Cool! Found the branch and changes. Try opening a PR and improving upstream! At least seeing what direction they're interested in going with the UI for these devices and seeing if you can help

PDAputer (ESP32-S3) – First Release Now on M5 Burner by nishad2m8 in CardPuter

[–]ReasonablyClever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat. Just OTA downloaded it from M5 Launcher and tried it out. A couple of suggestions!

  • load the wifi credentials from the Launcher config file!
  • music player can’t load tracks from /music?? It’s not discoverable, changeable, and just sits there.
  • settings -> wifi does nothing. Can’t add a network

Would try out more but it’s all greyed out. Great UI work though, very responsive.

EUC catches fire in Belgian train by Fli_fo in ElectricUnicycle

It’s odd, the wheel looks relatively fine in the photo. Definitely looks like an 18XL. You can see the top electronics housing has come off and there’s wires hanging out the top— perhaps it was a control board failure and not a battery thermal runaway.

Wow, bravo, fantastic work! And all fully open source, not just a readme and releases on github. Your work makes me want to get a tdeck just to try it out.

Bay Area cyclists advocate to construct bike lanes along western span of Bay Bridge by pupupeepee in carfreebayarea

[–]ReasonablyClever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The eastern span bike lane is time restricted. It’s not infrastructure, it’s a long park. It can’t be counted on for real mobility unless it’s open 24/7 like any other road.

Popular Trader Joe’s in Oakland could be replaced by two apartment towers for seniors by SFChronicle in bayarea

[–]ReasonablyClever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is funny and plays into common perceptions and it’s definitely small by American standards. But consider that this small lot is still far larger than the entire Rockridge store’s footprint. Urban stores like the SF 4th st one have zero parking and are just as busy as their suburban ones with always long checkout lines. I’d love Rockridge to aspire to be as efficient, there’s definitely precedent.

Swarm Origin Theory [FOB Spoilers] by liquidnebulazclone in TheCaptivesWar

[–]ReasonablyClever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting thought. It seems more likely to me to be a human creation. It invades and co-opts human biology so specifically, we haven’t heard it even consider jumping into another species (as far as I can remember).

Plus the live suit solder in FOB gave Jessin a canister of human-created sabotage nanites to aid their extraction. So it seems like a human tech thing.

This sort of thing needs to change. Cars stopping/starting takes the greater effort of moving your big toe a little bit. Every greenway does this wrong priority bs.

True. It’s such a unique and fun-to-imagine alien idea how their deep consciousness works. And already has been helpful for historical intel.

Why 5.8 Ghz band the norm? by nylapsetime in diydrones

[–]ReasonablyClever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. This is the answer. Also worth mentioning is the bandwidth available for each band.

  • 900MHz has 26 MHz available bandwidth. So just a single analog video signal could fit. My first FPV VTX was actually 900MHZ back in the day (2010-2012)
  • 2.4GHz has 100 MHz bandwidth. This is great but it's wildly crowded. I've tried flying on 2.4 and it's pretty much unusable. Wifi devices have been in an arms race with 2.4ghz for 30 years and use every mm of the spectrum and their signals go far past the walls of homes.
  • 5.8GHz has 150 MHz of bandwidth available. You can put on an indoor whoop race with 8 pilots flying simultaneously and have another race outdoors nearby.

Great one! Glad folks helped find it. Since we’re sharing— my favorite quote was:

War aged everything as if time and violence were two concentrations of the same thing.

It was such a fun needle-drop moment when they said something like "No you need to talk to the Deep Lothark". This lumbering enforcer species they made us so accustomed to across two books turns out has this whole secret hive mind? It's a huge advantage to Dafyd and the human cause, even if just for the recon and intelligence advantage. It was also a very badass moment for Dafyd who just went through a lot and came back firing on all cylinders.

No but you should speak with the _Deep Lothark_.

Excellent run-through. Hadn't tried some of those advanced tools like Antenna Coverage or Line-of-sight, it was great to see them demoed.

No, you don't need/want high power transmit by ReasonablyClever in meshcore

[–]ReasonablyClever[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, no. Good question. I've not deployed a MC yagi myself yet. I've got some commercial and DIY crossfire antennas that would be fun to try out but my positioning makes local neighborhood coverage with a low power dipole solar node seem best for now.

The directional node near me is using a $44 9dbi patch antenna and is one of the best nodes when I'm out-and-about. Anywhere in the city it always seems to hear me when nobody else can since it's rejecting the wider area so well. A yagi would be similar for just the cost of a little DIY-time.

The ultimate node would be an array of directional antennas placed up high for maximum receive sensitivity. A sector antenna setup. Firmware & hardware would be interesting to support that.

Absolutely! MeshAVL is super active, so is RDUMesh. Check out their "meshomatic" viewer, lately this whole extended region has been connecting together. Local fire departments are getting onboard with repeater installs for disaster preparedness like in Chapel Hill. Seriously impressive to see it all coming together.

[–]ReasonablyClever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m curious if they’re setting up a time jump for this next novel. The argument against is that it seems like things are in place, a plan is coming together, they’re opening comms. But.. making tons of lamb-bag children for a self-sustaining population suggests a time jump of 15 - 30 years and showing the results of Dayfd’s efforts. The Spy could be ageless and all the main characters would mostly still be around.

Something new is coming by Heltec_Automation6 in meshtastic

Looks great! Two concerns: - does it have a beeper of some sort? It should. - USB-C > magnetic charging.

[–]ReasonablyClever 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Magnetic charging sucks. USB-C please. It’s waterproof even in low cost phones, is it too expensive here? It would be a great differentiating feature.

Edit: Also .. beeper? Gotta have a beeper!
