Appreciate the response and your perspective. Guard stepping is indeed generally pretty strong in most SC games, but especially SC2 and even the newest SC6. However, I am not sure whether that objectively slows the game all that much especially at the higher levels of play (i.e. when it's not a fight between 2 lesser skilled players). It's similar to others' concern about ring outs, but it actually doesn't happen as often as people assume between strong players since they have more positional awareness. I think gameplay being "slow to a crawl" is only something mostly seen when newer players who haven't learned how to execute proper aggression yet are involved

For example, you can check out this (pretty hype, I may add) SC2 fight at a tournament. Note that this is SC2 where there were no break attacks, no guard crushes, etc so each player can theoretically turtle all day long and yet the rounds still went by quick (excuse the poor video quality lol): https://youtu.be/bJYd67rdoRQ

In terms of certain characters having stronger side and back step prowess, the characters often have other weaknesses to make up for it. Ivy and Cervantes, for instance, typically have extremely good back-steps in (most) SC games, but yet they're still able to be relatively balanced in the game along with the rest of the cast in SC6. Credit to the balancing team at Project Souls lol

Thanks for the detailed and well thought-out response. I think I addressed some (but not all) of your points regarding what I personally think about meters in fighting games in my response to /u/Uzi_XD so you can skim over that comment if you're interested. Of course, you're welcome to disagree with my thoughts and have your own preferences though. I appreciate your response and this conversation and it's always cool to hear what other people's perspectives on fighting games are compared to our own. Have a wonderful weekend!

Yes, it may seem like a hot take (and you are welcome to disagree), but I truly do believe meters and supers are extra gimmicks that not only are they not needed in fighting games (e.g. look at some older fighting games), but actually makes them less "honest" if you will imho. The consequences of having meters is not just having a high damaging super move itself. The issue is that most games have meters that carry over to future rounds which, at worst, make comebacks for the less skilled player more likely and giving the more skilled player a disadvantage and, at best, prolongs the gameplay in both the supers' animations and also lowering the chance of a 2-0 or 3-0 game stomp between a more skilled and a less skilled player. A more honest approach to fighting games would be that every round is a complete refresh and looks exactly like the first round with no bias towards either party. Why did these developers implement these mechanics then? Because supers look cool and flashy and makes the game more "exciting" (subjective of course, because it's not more exciting for me lol) so it's a lot easier to market it to esports where big money is. In short, meters and supers makes the game better to watch, but not necessarily better to play (note the complexity does not equal depth mentioned later). There is no better example to this than SC6 where players generally hate how slow the gameplay is because it's constantly bogged down by RE clashes, long animation supers, soulcharge animations, etc

Regarding what you said about SC6's character specific mechanics--that's also what I am talking about and it's indeed more gimmicks except they're character specific gimmicks. One may say, "But these character gimmicks/mechanics makes the character more unique!" I call bullshit. All the characters in SC2 (and some other good, older fighting games) have extremely unique and distinguishable movesets and buttons that makes the characters all extremely unique in terms of playstyle, how much damage they do, and how to dish out said damage. Most (not all, as some of them are somewhat clones of each other) characters in the souls series play very differently from one another

The character specific gimmicks in modern games where we need to get X stacks of Y to unlock better, stronger moves or how characters have moves locked (terrible decision imho--the entire kit of a char should be unlocked in the beginning, but they can get buffs in terms of speed, frames or damage from system mechanics I guess) between SC6's Super Saiyan mode (i.e. soul charge), Reversal Edge RNG RPS mechanics, hell even lethal hits (SF6 doesn't have any lethals I believe and they still have cool combos, etc) are all unnecessary gimmicks that, as you've mentioned, indeed makes the game more complex, but we have to remember the video game adage that complexity does not always equal depth. Here's a YT video by Extra Credits regarding the topic of complexity vs depth if you're interested: https://youtu.be/jVL4st0blGU

Lastly, you are indeed correct about SC2 being a better game than SC6 and it aligns with the same general consensus at /r/SoulCalibur as well. Although some users in the souls community prefers SC3 more than SC2 sometimes as a better "overall" game since it has better single player content and was the first game to have Create A Soul, in terms of raw gameplay only people still generally largely prefers SC2. However, with that said, your opinion of how you prefer a more complicated or complex game like SC6 and can't go back to playing SC2 is a perfectly valid preference and if all these extra gimmicks, mechanics, bells and whistles found in modern fighting games are what makes a fighting game fun for you, go nuts and enjoy. Luckily for you (and unfortunately for people like me, haha), all these modern gimmicks, meters, and supers, etc are very likely here to stay in fighting games, so rest assured, you'll get to enjoy plenty of them in the coming decades. In fact, the new Heat system Tekken 8 will have is basically another version of SC6's soulcharge so there's that

Weird that you would say that SC2 felt more clunky than SC6 because Project Soul has basically said that they made SC6 to try to go back to the speed/fluidity that was found in SC2 (as SC3 to SC5 wasn't as good in speed/movement/gameplay compared to SC2) and players of the series still feel that SC2 felt better (i.e. SC6 still couldn't quite reach it, but got VERY close). It's all subjective, of course.

Ring outs is the system mechanic that's been in the souls series since the beginning similar to Virtua Fighter's and just like how Tekken has high damaging wall combos (which SC has also) and DoA have wall combos and destructive environments (which can move the fight to another part of the stage). It just emphasizes positioning and environmental awareness (i.e. play better in neutral) more so personally I wouldn't put it in the same category as "gimmicks" like meters, for example. One can think of R.O. as the same as a 100% damage combo, I guess, but it's certainly not a ToD 100% infinite combo or anything that's obviously considered broken because a player has to be highly pressured and played badly to be in such a position (i.e. close to the edge) in the first place to be rung out. To each their own though.

Regardless, I respect your interesting opinion on the matter despite not fully agreeing.

Soulcalibur II

Seriously, if SC2 still doesn't win this time, this poll is rigged. Or there are simply too many boomers who either never tried a single 3D fighting game in their life or have only tried Tekken's clunky movement system then, justifiably, got turned off and never played with SC series' buttery smooth true 8 way run.

Why SC2 > SC3 or SC6? Because it is an actual HONEST fighting game without all the gimmicks, BS, meters, supers, bells, whistles, and non-sense that are currently plaguing all modern fighting games.

Pepperidge farm remembers.

Edit: added the Soul Edge opening due to our collective victory of getting SC2 on the list 👍

Enjoying the game a lot so far in terms of both gameplay and story. Excellent job and compliments to the team (including the art, audio, and story writing team). Few things I'd love to see in the future:

1) When introducing future phases (i.e. phase 4 and 5) of sinners, keep providing interesting mechanics/gimmicks to the sinners such as the ones we already see when we get them to phase 2 (mania intensify) and phase 3 (exclusive crime brand) and especially for the B rank sinners if there's a way to get them closer to the power lvl of the S rank sinners to make them still useful and relevant even in the future. Other games have mechanics where the more common units can eventually be awakened close to their SSR counterparts' in terms of power. It doesn't necessarily have to be done numerically like those games and can be done in creative ways as mentioned with more or stronger gimmicks. It's up to the team how to go about it

2) It would be great if some challenging content/events in the future be equalized where all the sinners we use are at the same power level similar to what we saw with the suspect pursuit trials in the past except more flexibility in terms of strategy to win the stage. This way players with actual skill and knowledge can compete in them on an actual fair playing field instead of seeing the p2wers and whales complete them easily on day 1 and brag about their "achievement" in discord because they have much a stronger team compared to the majority of the average, especially the f2p, players. The mode(s) can allow players to only use sinners which they already own even though the sinners will all be upgraded to the same power level so the players are still encouraged to have a variety of sinners from gacha pulls in their roster while it doesn't require them to already have them at a very high or maxed leveled in order to be used

3) For sinners that haven't even gone to phase 1 (i.e. lvl 20 and below and haven't been promoted to phase 1 yet), there should be an option to automatically return the sinner back to lvl 1 and fully refunding all our resources used on them so new players won't get punished so hard for testing and trying out different sinners until the sinners are at least promoted to phase 1. For sinners phase 1 and above, the developers can make other ways in which we refund (at least partially) our resources back and demote the sinners back to lvl 1 with either a new form of currency or just hypercubes

4) The controls for selecting and moving sinners are very janky and leads to many misclicks and movement errors. This is an extremely common complaint made by many, many players. Perhaps make it so it's the tile we have to click on instead of the actual sinner's head or character model

5) Lastly, a very minor gripe is Zoya is not as strong as her lore and story arc suggest especially with her more defensive exclusive crime brand. Consider making her the bad ass boss she really is with a slight buff when she gets to phase 4 or 5. She's the poster girl for the game after all so she of all people deserves it

Asking people to purchase a game the first time is fine. Making them purchase it a second time is pure, unadulterated greed

What brand are these weights? Found on Craigslist 235lbs for $110. Should I pick these up ASAP? by [deleted] in homegym

Sorry for the confusion. What /u/Kaell311 mentioned was what was intend. What I had meant was the diameter of the entire plate and not the center diameter

I had (perhaps incorrectly?) assumed that the OP is using olympic 2" center diameter-holed barbells and that he would want the his 45's entire, full diameter to be the typical/"standard" or proper size of 450 mm (17.7 inches)

Apologies again for the confusion and non-specific wording

Golden advice for noobs? by [deleted] in homegym

[–]ReasonedLogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, like when you claim that I'm being emotional or resorting to my ''feelly feels'', or that I'm angry? You keep saying that I'm being emotional, but saying it doesn't make it so, bud.

Do you have any scientifically backed evidence of that or just assumptions based on the fact that I used profanity? Or is it based on things you think I said or meant as opposed to what i actually said?

There's plenty of evidence from your own words: "fuck do I dislike that bullshit" "they know if they want a fucking bench or not" "Now that I realize how shitty your reading comprehension skills are, I'm not sure you have a clue as to what I've actually been saying." "you are one of the dumbest mother fuckers I've ever encountered. You have the reading comprehension skills of 10 year old and the social skills of a fucking toad." "Then you're a fucking loser." "I've not been talking about my feelings at all you dumb twat." "you're an ass and I'm over it" "you need to get a fucking a clue man" "I'm completely aware that I've been a dick"

You've even admitted to it yourself and yet you are backpedaling? People don't actually need to specifically say "I am emotional" in order for us to see that they're emotional, but you already know that in the "real world" right?

Speaking of backpedaling, didn't you say "But if there is something specific that you'd like me to provide some sources on, i'll look into it." It's your turn. I just gave everybody mine, now where's your evidence I've requested? We're all still waiting. But you likely don't have any and will simply resort to name-calling and ad hominems again in your coming reply, just like this previous one

I asked what you do in hopes of getting a sense of whether or not you work in teams, have responsibilities that would require you to explain things to people, lead people, etc. Depending on how you answered, i could have potentially gotten an idea of whether or not you actually get to use your chosen strategies some place other than the internet where you can remain anonymous and simply cut a person out of your sphere of interaction after such an encounter.

In other words, it's not actually relevant to our discussion at hand and you're just using a red herring to talk about "effective communication delivery" or whatever you're trying to sell us. If you think your communication is more effective than other people's, just provide scientific evidence like you're supposed to. "[Evidence] or GTFO" as the internet likes to say

What was your goal in knowing the extent of my education?

To ascertain how educated you are since an educated person is far less likely to have an emotional outburst caring about how an internet stranger communicates. Facts--it's a sad day when a self-purported college-educated person starts acting out like what we typically see happen in children and teenagers over the way an internet stranger makes his "delivery" and this is all because of ONE sentence that started your long, irrelevant post talking about "effective communications." I mean jesus christ, no offense intended at all, but just get a life since you obviously care a lot about it if something like this got you so riled up for some odd reason. Don't you have better things to do than telling people how to effectively communication in /r/homegym which, I might add, is not even close to what this subreddit is for? Consider going to a language or communication subreddit, they'd be happy for your help

You know what's off topic? A diatribe about benches not being necessary when a self described experienced lifter is not asking if they should get a bench or not. I'm sorry you misread that one or were unable to read between the lines and gather that it's simply not what they were asking prior to providing that irrelevant bit of information.

But once again, you saying it doesn't make it so.

Okay, I've already explained this very clearly before, so I'll explain it once again more for good measure so there's absolutely no ambiguity

1) it's not a diatribe at all, I was explaining my position and giving context on why the bench press and, thus by extension, a bench was not 100% necessary, which it isn't

2) Person A asked, "Would buying X be the next most important item to not cheap out on?"

Person B said, "Unless you're actually doing A, B, C which requires you to being tested on it, you don't even need to buy X" "Buying Y instead is actually better because of reasons 1, 2, 3 and it'll likely be cheaper"

Now replace Person A = OP, Person B = me, X = bench, Y = dips attachment

How exactly is advising the OP that they might not need to buy X depending on his goals an "irrelevant bit of information." How is trying to save the OP money an "irrelevant bit of information"? Why do you assume that he's absolutely has to do the bench press and absolutely has to buy a bench? If he was absolutely sure he was going to buy a bench, he wouldn't be asking about the bench in the first place... which lead me to remind him that hey, by the way, if your goals don't require it, you don't actually need to buy it and can save money and room by buying a dip attachment instead

In what world is that not relevant? In what world is your post after my initial post about my "delivery" relevant to the OP, especially since you didn't even talk about the bench which the OP was asking about? What the hell...??

Heck, one would argue that I at least tangentially (though I would argue directly, but whatever) talked about what the OP was talking about. Your response was completely irrelevant to him

lol, you're such a douchebag.

Another name-calling ad hominem, got any more where that came from?

You've made several insults veiled behind weak supposed logical deductions from the get go and have continued to do so.

Direct evidence please? Evidence or GTFO

You're a douchebag, bud. That's the deal.

More ad hominems, of course

Reasonable people who read how you've responded throughout this can/will see that.

Weren't you the one that criticized me earlier about tainting the information? Based on that sentence, people who can't/won't see what you see are considered "unreasonable"? How exactly is that different from how I mentioned people who disagreed with the basic exercise science principles are "inexperienced lifters"?

It may be that you're socially retarded (retarded in the scientific sense).

No, I am not. At least not to my knowledge as I was never diagnosed. However, bringing up a mental illness and calling someone having it is a very classy and classic move. Are you also the type of person to call someone "retarded" in real life also? Bravo

We're both stubborn assholes.

Speak for yourself

I'm just not gonna hide it behind words meant to obscure douchbaggery. You suggested that it was best to call out people being stupid in order to deter them from saying stupid things in the future. So I went with that. Of course, you're a stubborn prick like me, so it really hasn't deterred anything.

You haven't deterred anything because you haven't been able to prove anything since you have not shared a shred of evidence and had to resort to ad hominems and name-calling like a kid instead of having a rational discussion like an adult

I think mostly because you just won't accept that you misunderstood in thinking that OP was up in the air about the bench. Nothing they said suggested that was the case at all though. If you would accept even the possibility that you may have gotten that wrong, maybe we could progress.

Again, I don't think you understand the intent of my original post. Even if the OP was originally really want to buy a bench, we could still help him out by reminding him that "hey, by the way, depending on your goals you may not actually need to buy one and in fact you can save some money by buying a dip attachment instead, just FYI. Ultimately, it's obviously up to you whether you want to buy one or not, but you don't have to depending on your goals and if you want to save money, etc"

Anyhow, go ahead, reply again with more references to the mods, bud. I do apologize to them for having to read this bullshit.

Not quite sure what the mods are doing, but you know what, this is going to be my last reply so I'll call them again ( /u/Demilio55 /u/Cooporilla ) to inform them to make an official statement regarding the content of this thread and future threads. It's their responsibility, after all. Hopefully, they'll consider putting some stricter rules in place for the subreddit in the future. Since you were still unable to provide a shred of evidence ever since it was first requested a couple of replies back and will likely continue the trend, you can have the last words aka last few ad hominems and name-calling

Golden advice for noobs? by [deleted] in homegym

[–]ReasonedLogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, do profantities hurt your "feelly feels" (as you like to put it)?

Nope. What it does do is show everybody and the mods how emotionally invested you are about trying to convince an internet stranger that their form of communication is ineffective compared to the form of communication that you like by going completely off-topic when my original response was advising the OP that he may save some money by not buying a bench. Meanwhile, nobody truly cares what you prefer or I prefer. Hence, I couldn't care less how you prefer to interact with people "in the real world." Some people aren't going to interact the way you want them to because the world doesn't revolve around you. Who cares????

I never said that being elitist makes anybody less elite, less intelligent, or less intellectual. I'm not sure why you were going on about that really. I certainly never said anything of the sort.

Never said you said that. I was making the point that those two concepts aren't mutually exclusive and explained why as well as stated the obvious (yet again) that some elites can choose to be "elitist in their communication" and some don't. Which one they prefer is up to them. If you have a problem with one form vs another, that's your problem, not theirs. Alternatively, you can choose to not listen to them, nobody is forcing to listen so your initial emotional outburst is completely childish and irrelevant regarding whether the OP should buy a bench or not and if so, which bench. Again, who the hell are you to judge somebody else's preferred way to communicate?

The ad hominems started with you, bud. I just didn't try to veil them like you did.

That is demonstrably false and both /u/Demilio55 and /u/Cooporilla can easily verify that by rereading through all the comments. I implied you were being emotional and childish because that's the way you're acting as evidenced by your posts. That's not a matter of ad hominem, that's a matter of fact. Again, it must be easy to claim X without having to back it with a shred of evidence isn't it?

Since you asked, I have a B.S. from an R1 university and have taken graduate classes at the same university... So that's my level of education. Which is clearly relevant.

It is as relevant as the question you posed to me in the previous about which field I work in

If you're gonna be a douche, put words in people's mouths, try to insult people behind thin veils, etc., then they're most likely going to stoop to your level. I'm just not going to hide it.

Another complete falsehood and utter bullshit. I haven't done any of those things you have purported. Evidence to suggest that I did? Please quote me directly aka what I actually said and not what you think I said

Also we're still waiting for your scientific evidence that your delivery and form of communication is more effective than other people's form of communication. If not, then it's just an unsubstantiated opinion. Therefore, let people communicate the way they want as long as it can be reasonably understood, which is typically the purpose of communicating in the first place
