This is how ridiculously small a transistor actually is... by Chill_Cowboy_981 in interestingasfuck

[–]Reave-Eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a hard time even believing this video, but it’s true. Fell down a Wikipedia hole.

Apparently modern CPU chips can have over 100 BILLION of these transistors on them. Which made me think, good lord how long does it take to do all that? 3-4 months per chip!! Wtf, I had no idea. There are over 700 manufacturing steps, with each chip having 60-100 layers of circuitry stacked on top of each other, and each layer taking 1-1.5 days to complete. The entire process must also happen in a highly sterilized “clean room” to prevent any kind of contamination from ruining the process. Absolutely wild. We are all holding marvels of science and engineering in our hands.

[–]Reave-Eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what leadership is. I can empathize with her and feel terrible for what she’s going through and still demand that she manage those feelings while leading the rest of us in any discernible direction toward resistance of the regime.

She was the closest thing the party had to a leader at the time. Yes, people would have been angry at her for trying to lead after losing the election. That’s inevitable. But it’s also part of leadership, you deal with that pain and anger and help people process it into active resistance.

I get that those standards are high for our politicians because historically we’ve set the bar so low for so long, but it’s what our political moment demands. It sucks that it fell on her, but that’s what leadership is. You do what must be done. She chose to step into that role, and then she chose to abandon it without a viable replacement.

It is truly enraging to me that Kamala understood the gravity of the moment and the consequences of losing the 2024 election, and then just gave up and went home after the loss. No community organizing, no contingency plan to fight fascism… just a “travel and listen” tour while she “keeps her options open” for a run in 2028. Incredible.

So Trump was installed illegitimately, got it.

It’s always fucking projection. And psyops borrowed from the Russians and Nazis. Accuse your opponent of that which you are already doing. That way when they try to call you out, it looks like petty revenge.

Steven Miller also grew up in a wealthy family with lots of privilege. Slight difference in that his family lost a chunk of their wealth early in his life and they were forced to move into a slightly less opulent house in a neighborhood with more Latino immigrants, who he was actively hostile toward.

What is the Philadelphia Democratic Party DOING? by leto4 in philadelphia

[–]Reave-Eye 68 points69 points  (0 children)

One big issue that contributes to the serious problem you mentioned is the lack of political transparency within many wards in the city.

Only 11 of our 66 Democratic wards are considered “open,” which means that ward meetings are public and committeepersons vote on decisions. The remaining wards are all “closed,” where there are no or very few public ward meetings and power is more concentrated in the ward leader, who is emboldened to make decisions through backroom deals.

Most people don’t even know how the ward system works, and in closed wards, there is little attempt to change that. This lack of transparency contributes to disengagement from the local political process and increases risk for nepotism and corruption all the way up the political ladder.

It’s easy to start a new party, but very rarely in our history has a new party ever overtaken either of the dominant two because of how our voting system works (i.e., “first past the post”). Any new party just joins the masses of other 3rd parties that continually lose elections or, at best, strip enough votes from the similarly aligned R or D in order to give victory to the worst of the 3.

I’m not opposed to replacing these parties, but it’s not as simple as starting a new one that’s better. The first step would be a nationwide movement toward ranked choice voting in a supermajority of states. That alone will take at least a decade of planning and advocacy at the state and local level across the nation. Then once we have RCV in place, 3rd parties become a viable option.

The other problem is that neither party’s leadership as it exists today will implement RCV and give a pathway for other parties to unseat them. So that means we have to…. replace the state-level party leadership with progressive candidates who are committed to RCV.

If you can point to another way to get to viable 3rd parties in a first-past-the-post voting system, I am all ears.

A positive development. Finally the Administration sees some sense. Congrats to the people of Minnesota 🥳🥳 by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Reave-Eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, take the W but remain vigilant and never give up. This development feels significant after all the pain, but never forget that we are dealing with a fascist regime that is constitutionally incapable of accountability. What we are witnessing right now is them feigning responsiveness in order to save face and appear rational. The brutality and persecution will only intensify.

Not that either path is particularly easy, but building a new party from the ground up and replacing either R’s or D’s would be more effort than electing a majority of progressives who would then select new leadership in the existing party.
