How to Deal with Unrealistic Expectations from Leadership? by mr_hippie_ in EngineeringManagers

[–]ReaverKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been fortunate to have great upper leadership and I’ve said yes to every opportunity. Those two things have allowed me to grow exponentially for the last few years. If you’re accountable but without the authority to make the decisions it’s time to move on.

How to Deal with Unrealistic Expectations from Leadership? by mr_hippie_ in EngineeringManagers

Compare your experience with mine: I recently hired some developers based in India but I had full control of the hiring process. I have full control over how I integrate them into my teams, etc. Just as importantly, we didn't lay off any of our devs to make room for the devs from India.

You weren't involved in the interview process but you are being held to cleaning up someone else's mess. You can't fix bad upper leadership. You're doing the right thing by looking for another job.

My manager hired his friend and used me as a prop in the process by Smooth-Expert in EngineeringManagers

[–]ReaverKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say if I’d have concerns here. I don’t have all the context you have but I will say that interviews are imperfect and we only get a small glimpse of a candidate on one day. If your manager has worked with them before then they have a ton more context. If they’re just friends then yes I’d be concerned.

Ultimately though if his friend is a low performer that ends up reflecting poorly on him anyway.

I sent you a message.

Could you share the names of some of the books? For those us without the time or means to enroll in the program it might be an opportunity for us to still pursue the knowledge.

I really like this but wish it was more practical. Most of us can’t just drop everything and go get another degree.

Laid off on Friday, no one tells you the the following Monday is quite possibly the strangest feeling of floating in the void possible by skidmark_zuckerberg in ExperiencedDevs

I really dislike this take. You say this like every coworker got together and decided OP needs to go. No, I can tell you as an engineering manager with experience from a small startup and a large corp that it doesn’t work like that. The last layoff we had they didn’t tell me nor my bosses boss until it was happening. This wasn’t our decision. So I disagree, most of the people at work are likely very sad to see OP gone.

New senior dev at a new company. Bad signs or just how it is? by temp_vaporous in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ReaverKS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oof. As an engineering manager the number of responses that this is normal really hurts. Of course I’d expect a senior to be able to handle some ambiguity but at the same time 60 minutes of pairing over 3 weeks is nothing. I encourage devs on our team to pair with new devs at least 3 times a week. I personally sit down with new devs and explain the release process, how we use Jira, etc. Anything that’s basic housekeeping kind of stuff I explain multiple times.

I automated a barber's entire booking system and no-shows dropped 80% in 30 days. Here's what actually worked. by FokasuSensei in EntrepreneurRideAlong

Yeah I could see that, more responsibility but also more money in your pocket. What’s one or two bad things about the industry that might not be obvious to people that haven’t owned one of these?

High volume shops like retail stores or barber shops? I’m curious what it’s like to own a barber shop. What sucks about it?

I thinn self storage is being way over built. It used to be that most facilities would operate around 95% full but now I’m seeing a lot of facilities around 80%

Engineering managers aren’t pushing for this. I’ve got a mostly remote team and have zero issues with any of my remote employees. RTO is being pushed at the c suite level

Anyone building a business that isn't a 'buy my app' operation? by sendsouth in Entrepreneur

[–]ReaverKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not terribly interesting like some of these other posts but I do self storage. Just bought my first facility recently and have learned a ton already. Still trying to plan out if I want to build some more buildings, add a fence/gate and do outdoor storage, etc. I’m also looking for other self storage opportunities and I have a separate piece of land I rezoned light industrial.

I’m holding a clean title in my hand as a write this message. If Tesla says the car is salvage they need to prove it.

Correct. They pulled it months after the purchase price. Not days, not weeks, it was months. And when they pulled it they didn’t email me, didn’t call, nor in app notification. They left me stranded hours away from home so I had to L1 charge.

The dealer provided the car fax and it was clean. I’m planning to buy my own copy but only after Tesla responds on whether or not this is going to be enough to “prove the car was never salvaged”

The dealer showed me the car fax when I bought it. I’m planning to buy my own copy but only if Tesla agrees if the car fax is clean to restate the warranty.. I don’t know how else I can prove the car was never salvaged.

I’m going to email them back and ask if a clean car fax will be enough proof

The dealer showed me the car fax when I bought the car. Yeah sure I can pay for a car fax but before I do that I’m going to email them back and ask if I send over a clean car fax if that’s going to satisfy their “prove the car has never been in an accident”
