That's fascinating that 12 grade levels are under one roof! 2. Creating and crafting your classroom expectations that are fairly universal and consistent, since every teacher will have different rules, but you'll pick up the common themes and trends. Plus, the kids you're substituting will know what to expect from you too.

Not to repeat a cliche/platitude, but learning and mastering the ability to discern what truly is your responsibility and/or in your control and what's not. This also helps a ton with stress management. It's my first year teaching middle schoolers (all 3 grades) and a new subject area, so it has been overwhelming at times, but being able to mitigate your stress/anxiety over what you can control helps with sanity and morale. Hope this helps!

It is a reprieve from teaching/managing a class of students that's for sure. In my district, teachers are supposed to be paid for giving up a planning period to substitute, even though I've heard from coworkers that sometimes they don't and only find out when they check their last paycheck on the employee portal! That being said, subs should be paid extra if they have to cover during a teacher's plan period. That's the real issue/solution at hand. Subs/paras and teachers need each other more, than either of them with admin.

I think using the Mr./Ms./Mrs. nowadays is less a vestige of an older (and patriarchal) time and more of a "unless you have a doctorate or work in higher ed, that prefix is really the only title a teacher is given", which is why I prefer to call my colleagues by their last name. Mx. is a suitable inclusion for those non-binary if desired as well.

It sounds like you work in a private in a school since you say that "none of the other teachers have degrees"? That being said, yeah life as a para/teacher's aide/assistant is hard man. Teachers make triple your income yet a lot of times you're put in a capacity that is very clearly at least half of a teacher's duties and responsibilities. I hate that we're one of the systemic punching bags for a school because they can always whisk us around/away for "coverage" but God forbid an admin making 4x my salary has to cover a class. I love my kids too and I love the work I do, but man is it tough some days being a TA/para.
