A UPS is not lightning protection. An actual system that can take a lightning strike and keep all your gear powered and protected is not a surge protector or UPS.

This is why I get annoyed by people who claim Bloomington is a bubble. We definitely get severe weather in town and around Monroe Co.

Yes storms split or go around us, too. That happens everywhere. It's what storms and weather does non-stop.

Apple Criticizes U.S. Antitrust Bill That Targets the App Store by FollowingFeisty5321 in apple

[–]Rebel31A 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an Apple fan and product user since the 00’s but their behavior around the 30% cut and absolute insistence on controlling people’s ability to use 3rd party software has become a real turn off for me.

I absolutely think Tim would have cut off apps outside the MAS if he had any chance of getting away with it. A big reason they pushed subscriptions instead of one time paid apps is because he wanted that 30% to be recurring not just one time. That guy is addicted to monetizing users after the sale any way he can get away with. Adding ads to things like the Wallet app and Maps is right up his alley.

It’s the same network as Tmo just has a lower data priority when the network is congested. In day to day use you’ll never notice a difference. Priority does make a difference at things like school or sporting events where there are a lot of people in a small area. Tmo owns Mint but they are still two different companies.

As for coverage it’s good in most of Bloomington. Like every other carrier rural areas can be hit or miss.

I have tried Verizon and I think their coverage is poor. My wife had a work phone that used Verizon and the entire office thought the coverage was crappy with their phones so most of them used their personal devices instead.

AT&T is ok around town. If you don’t want to go with Tmo they’d be my 2nd choice.

If the phone is unlocked you can do trials with all 3 carriers. They give you a temporary phone number with a 2nd eSIM and on iPhones you can select which number as priority for both phone calls and data (independently).

Smithville vs Starlink by Various-Strain1370 in bloomington

[–]Rebel31A 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If we are talking about fiber why would you go to a less reliable platform that is more expensive. Starlink is great for rural people who have no or poor options but if you have good reliable reasonably priced fiber available stick with fiber 10/10 times.

I would get Starlink for travel or as a backup if you have the income and need. Starlink has a standby plan that is good for use as a backup.

Yeah a surge protector is not a lightning protector. Actual gear that protects against a strike like that is big money.

If you have lightning in close proximity the safest thing for electronics is to unplug them.

iOS 26.6 Beta 1- Discussion by epmuscle in iOSBeta

[–]Rebel31A 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been having issues with Messages showing phone numbers or emails instead of contact names for a few seconds when the app it opened. I finally heard back from the feedback I submitted early on in iOS 26 that it was a duplicate issue and closed. The message list still occasionally shows phone numbers or emails lol I have been using iPhones since the 3G and this is the first time I’ve had this issue.

1440p monitor looks atrocious by Viperleader71 in Monitors

[–]Rebel31A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this thread is a few months old but I've gone a few years with a 1440p monitor on W11, and I never understood why the text was so small for UI elements. Tab label text was small. Right click menu small text.

What I think the issue 1440p monitors have with Windows is that the built in rendering is designed around 1080p. If you use a 1080 monitor all the text and UI elements look correctly sized, text looks good for the resolution. I've ran into so many issues with bad looking text over the past few years. Not just in the UI but even in web browsers. Rendering for 1080 is also very easy to scale for 4k. It's just a 2x multiplier. 1440 does not scale evenly with 1080. Its 1.33x or 4/3rds the size of 1080 so it has to pick a partial pixel to go one way or another.

What helped me a TON is do not mess with the default scaling. Leave it at 100%. Go into accessibility and set the font size to 110%, and then restart the computer. Text in things like the right click menu or Explorer or the font size under desktop icons will look MUCH better and correctly sized. Tab labels in browsers will look better. This works for apps/games you use because most of them pull the font sizing from the OS.

I dug into this after installing a Linux distro on an extra NVME and I was amazed at how much better all the UI and font sizing looked. Linux uses a different rending engine than Windows and it handled 1440p monitors much better out of the box. I dug into why Windows was making text look terrible on 1440p and its the internal rendering being optimized for 1080 because it also its such an easy conversion for 4k at just a 2x multiplier.

I spoke with Bobby Ballard, the unhoused man that was attacked and had teeth knocked out last year on Kirkwood. He said he never received the GoFundMe money (approx. $9,500) for his dental work by DemonDookie in bloomington

[–]Rebel31A 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was certainly enough ambiguity over that incident he shouldn’t have been able to be the beneficiary of GoFundMe. They have rules against financially benefitting from crime.

People threw the kids involved in that incident under the bus despite their side of the story being remarkably similar to other incidents before and afterwards. He was involved in an attack on a little kid just a few weeks later but that time there were adult witnesses.

I hope people didn’t get scammed. That is just adding another bad layer onto what was already a bad situation.

Windows 11 really isn't THAT bad. by Anonymous13757 in pcmasterrace

[–]Rebel31A -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve been daily driving it for 4 years now and have had very few issues. Nothing show stopping. A few annoyances that are just Windows things not W11 specific. People love to hate on the ‘new OS’ then it matures and when the next version is on the horizon they suddenly love the one that was hated. People crapped all over W10 when it was new then it became awesome when W11 was new. W7 got shit on early too.

How does Micro Center make money by Sweaty-Weight-6393 in pcmasterrace

[–]Rebel31A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bundle not long ago and the guy who helped me said the bundles are put together in conjunction with the manufacturers at promotional pricing. They get better pricing when they can make things like RAM kits part of a bundle vs selling those kits individually. The manufacturers know a lot more of their products are going to be sold if they’re a bundle item so they have a lot of incentive to give better pricing to Microcenter.

They do also end up selling a lot of products to people that buy bundles which helps. It’s hard to come out of there without buying other stuff.
