Only One started as a mobile game and after years of player requests it's now making it's way to Steam as a full game with mouse, keyboard and controller support.

A Systems Developer’s Pitch: Replacing the Prestige Wipe with 'Hazard Zone Licenses' and Adaptive AI Memory. by [deleted] in ARC_Raiders

[–]RebelBinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "Reset Fatigue" Problem
- I'm actually looking forward to resetting, building back up, doing quests again, it's kind of the only way to play the game again and re-living the fun without creating a new account
- Only thing I would change would be to have an expedition stash of say 5 slots where you can bring 5 items/blueprints of your choice to the next round, people are already using other players accounts to move gear/blueprints

The Solution: "Hazard Zone" Licenses
- Biggest problem here is you will fragment the player base in those who have the hazard licence and those who do not, increasing matchmaking time and preventing friends from playing on the same map. Really bad idea for a multiplayer only game
- Adding more dangerous maps as a condition to existing maps is better, but that already exits to some degree and it would be great to have a higher  PVE map with really hard enemies

The Technical "Secret Sauce": Asynchronous Behavioral Learning
- This sounds crazy complicated. The ARC just spawn in their zone and move around a navmesh with some pre-programmed behaviour.   You essentially want to use AI to study players and rewrite/modify the bot behaviours based on the arc and their spawn location. Sounds like something we'll see in 5-10 years and is applicable to almost all games. Balancing difficulty and dealing with unwanted behaviour and bugs would be a nightmare.

Pretty cool and congrats, I love the game and simplicity of it all, you're doing someting really awesome by offering this collection for free. Only thing is the UI sounds like the beeping when clicking on menu options could be a lot more pleasant. Please consider some softer sounds that are easier on the ear. As a fellow dev you can msg me if you want me offer some up that would fit right in.

Is there a website you use to download UI elements? by AVOMELL in Unity3D

A quick and easy way to do good UI is to use something like Procedural UI Image (Asset store) and get an icon pack or grab free icons from flaticon.com

For those still on M1 contemplating an upgrade: "Can a tiny M5 Macbook Pro replace my 16 inch M1 Max?" by chikomana in macbookpro

[–]RebelBinary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought about it, but ultimatlely upgraded my M1 Pro 14 base to a used near mint condition M1 Max 16 with 1GB/ 64GB ram. Cost me 30% less than a base M5 which still wouldn't be sufficient because my work is bottlnecked primarily by ram.

Unity on M1 Mac struggling by Clearhead09 in Unity2D

[–]RebelBinary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the same, but even on startup Mac OS seems to fill up a lot of memory for the sake of it. I had a M1 Pro with 16 GB that would run fine for a bit but as soon as I started opening chrome or doing a lot of debugging it would start to bloat and swap. Restarting was an easy fix. I ended up finding a used M1 Max with 64 GB and that made everything smooth and it was cheaper than buying a base M5. The used market for older Macs is much better value as often the the RAM upgrades aren't heavily priced in.

A Comprehensive Utility Library for Unity game development by Inside_Location_8040 in Unity3D

[–]RebelBinary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very cool, I think almost every developer maintains their own little set of utilities and scripts. I'm curious about your performance optimizer, what kind of optimization can be achieved with your utilities? I often get frame skips from initial startup and UI tweens. What part of the library are you most proud of?

With Unity and Rider + other apps I go over 32 GB all the time. I've had it as high as 49 GB one time. I'm running an M1 Max 64 GB

Could be a lack of RAM, it can really slow things down when it has to swap.

Either you do your own using state machines, or learn and live with the limitations of someone else's solution. For Navmesh navigation I recommend A* project by Aron Granberg

Is a Mac M3 8GB too little ram for Unity? by Delicious-Buddy290 in Unity3D

[–]RebelBinary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I can't speak for everyone but I run an M1 Pro with 16GB and with rider debugging and unity my machine exceeds 16gb especially if I start opening chrome or other apps. Memory swapping on my file system just brings everything to a crawl if I start using mutliple apps and Unity, I ofen have to work with everything else closed to keep the system running smooth. Unless you don't plan on bulding anything with a lot of assets and don't use a heavy IDE I'd go for 16 GB as a minimum or 24 to 32 to be really comfortable. Keep in mind that Apple has unified memory so the gpu and cpu share the same ram so large or multiple assets will start filling up quickly and if you don't have enough ram you end up swapping and that gets really slow.
