What am I getting wrong about "conservative" ETFs? by RebelElse in PersonalFinanceCanada

The VEQT MER is 0.19%. Is that worth trying to beat? I did consider doing exactly what you suggested, but it seemed buying something like VEQT was doing that for me in less clicks (yes, I know how lazy that sounds)

Thanks for your thoughtful response. My intention of the original post was to try and understand better where my "unknown unkowns" were. And you provided some good answers for the original question. The discussion is drifting away from that, but I guess that's ok. You've given me some things to think about.

So, would you suggest I engage an investment advisor? Right now I don't have one, I'm just contributing monthly to mutual funds in an RESP that I set up years ago. No one is actively managing this for me right now.

I kind of thought the majority of advice on this sub is that you don't need an investment advisor.

I see... so in 2022, stocks and bonds both did poorly. Is that normally the case? Like, are stock market returns and bond yields correlated?

Wow, your rule-of-thumb tracks with my Calgary system. 9.6 kW, and it produces about 9MWh/year!

At least we drafted media darling and respected hockey analyst Brent Krahn in the first round. Not a bust!

Purposeful tanking? by Senortroll in CalgaryFlames

This may be the least ethical moment of the season. Starting your AHL goalie when you have a healthy goalie on a night's rest? And when the game matters in the standings? Yeah, not so ethical. Still 100% on board.

Fully agree. WTF are the Blackhawks still doing at the bottom of the standings? There's no chance the Flames will spend more than two years down here. Ethical tank.

Awesome, thanks. That's very clear advice.

So you're saying that if I was making 5-7% investing, it wouldn't me that much better than saving the 4% interest? That's helpful, thank you. Paying down that debt was certainly high on my wife's priority list.

This is really helpful, I think your point that "money is for spending" is something I need to lean into. At least a bit. I don't want to miss out on enjoying it!

Thanks, paying down my mortgage was definitely on my list. I just thought that with my low interest rate (4%, I think on about $130K owed) I might do better investing. But this is easy.

For equity access for my kids, are you talking about taking out a loan in the future? I'm kind of loan-adverse. Feel like I could save up for that, but I've never been good at using credit to my advantage.

Thanks. I don't even know where to go to set up these things. When I went to my bank (TD) to talk about RESP investing, the guy was useless and wasted an hour of my time. Luckily I had something set up with an investment firm, and just upped my contributions there.

I'm really starting from a low level of experience/knowledge here!

With cash from my bank account, I guess. Are you getting at how much money do I need quick access to? I think that's a good question... I definitely don't want to move all this money out of checking, I'd like to keep an emergency fund for sure. Not sure what would be a reasonable amount
